Hi everyone has any of you has any experience with palpitations or irregular heart beat when pregnant I dont know if I should be going up to a&e or sitting right.

8 weeks pregnant and for the last 4 or 5 says my heart feels like it skips a beat almost every minute. I'm usually fit and well but lately I've been feeling very tired and light headed not to mention sick. Wsid?

It happened to me in every pregnancy. In fact it was one of the early symptoms for me. It's horrid though. I never found out why.

Can't give you any advice as I'm not medically trained.

Cheeseandcrisps · 01/07/2018 22:01

I already have one dd and I've never experienced it which is why I think its worried me so much.. I mean it's your heart... pretty major right? I dont want to get laughed at for going in to get checked out so thought I'd ask here. Reasurring to know someone else has had this though however unpleasent it is.

It's normal in pregnancy. However if you experience chest pain also, seek a medical opinion

TooMuchGreys · 01/07/2018 22:04

It could be a symptom of low iron. I had the same thing.

PossiblyPFB · 01/07/2018 22:04

I have a minor irregular heartbeat normally, didn’t notice any major issues when pg though, out of the norm (for me anyway). I’d say get it checked out if you’re in any way worried by it!

reddressblueshoes · 01/07/2018 22:04

I've had this. I'd be inclined to mention it at your next doctor/midwife appointment, I wouldn't say it needs a and e unless you're having other symptoms as well. But only you know your body- I googled my symptoms and pregnancy and the descriptions I got matched how I was feeling but if you're v worried might be worth ringing the NHS number and seeing what they say.

wowsaidtheowl · 01/07/2018 22:08

I had this and it turned out to be very stressful but in no way dangerous so don’t panic. All my midwives were relaxed about it as it’s super common but once my gp sent me to a&e, I ended up high risk and on beta blockers. It was a total over reaction! Rest as much as you can - it was definitely worse when I was tired. But don’t worry.

BananaToffo · 01/07/2018 22:11

Yep.

This started happening to me when I was pregnant (22 years ago!). I was petrified and it took me a long, long time to come to terms with and truly believe that the skipped beats were (and are) completely harmless.

Obviously you must speak to your GP as this is a new symptom for you. But, let me reassure you in the meantime.....all hearts do this but only some people are aware of it. It is extremely common for them to become noticeable in pregnancy, maybe because there's more blood being pumped or the effect of hormones, I am not sure. But it is a "thing".

Speak to your GP and let them check you out. If they determine it's harmless ectopic beats (almost certainly from what you say) then start to read up as much as you can about them so that you hopefully avoid the anxiety that many people, like me, have been through.

I still get them but I genuinely don't care any more. Even when I get a run of two or three in a row, a big cough stops them dead.

Best analogy I have ever heard is that they are a bit like hiccups....your heart harmlessly hiccups from to time.

BUT...don't take anyone's word for anything, you still must see your GP.

Notsure1111 · 01/07/2018 22:12

Totally normal no need to go to a&e you could phone 111 if you're really concerned or just phone GP tomorrow.

Bowlofbabelfish · 01/07/2018 22:14

I’ve had this too - appears to have been anaemia for me. It’s reduced but not stopped after I’ve taken iron tablets (don’t take iron tablets unless you’re told you need them, too much iron isn’t good for you.)

You should always get any new symptom that’s cardiac related checked. Mention this to your midwife /doc, and they will assess.

LittleBird74 · 01/07/2018 22:15

Yeah, I get them anyway but got them really badly when pregnant.
It’s worth seeing the GP about for a check over and piece of mind.
Of course if you get chest pain, breathless, dizzy or nauseous alongside them please get checked urgently.

Thingsthatgo · 01/07/2018 22:18

I had this, with breathlessness. It was anaemia, which was diagnosed by a blood test. They also checked thyroid function. They put me on high dose iron, and it made me feel a lot better (apart from the weird black poo!).

Owlettele · 01/07/2018 22:18

I had this from about week 6 to 8 with my dad so hopefully it may be short lived. No one was sure why it happened but it was a bit unsettling. We are both fine though. Worth getting checked but try not to worry

Cheeseandcrisps · 01/07/2018 22:18

Oh thank you so much everyone!! I feel much better now!! I've got no pain what so ever I do find its worse at night or maybe I just notice it more! I have my first midwife appointment tomorrow (exciting stuff I know) so i will just maybe mention it then so its noted but thank you so much for the reassurance I guess I can't go by my pregnancy with Dd as no 2 are the same!

Yes mention it they'll do an iron level check and you'll probably be on iron tablets soon but that's all normal. Congratulations and enjoy x
