To think that BBC Countryfile has just had its "jump the shark" moment.

A competition for junior presenters? This is nonsense surely. Countryfile, I thought, was a serious, if a bit lightweight, magazine programme about country matters, but this is just plain daft.

What does jump the shark mean?

It's always had an element of 'just for fun' stuff, and I suppose encouraging young people to take an interest in rural issues and/or broadcasting isn't exactly out of its remit.

"Jump the Shark" is that point in a TV show when it becomes so bad the only option is to end it. It comes from a US sitcom called "Happy Days" that towards the end go so desperate for plotlines it had a character jump over a shark while surfing.
