Bonfires in the Garden

My neighbour has lit a bonfire in his garden every day for the last five days. He waits until 6pm but it's still hot and light but it is getting cool so we would like to open our kitchen up and our children's bedrooms but can't because it stinks of smoke. The first couple of nights we had washing out and the house open which then stank because he didn't warn us that he was going to start a bonfire at all. Now we are having to check before we can open the house / put out any washing because he seems to be doing it every night.
AIBU to ask him to stop until it is a bit cooler? I don't want to start a disagreement but it's really hot for the kids in their rooms and you know, it's nice to enjoy your backyard when the weather is hot and the days are long without a face full of smoke.

Every day is a bit much, once every so often is fine I think but I don't think you'd be out of order to nicely ask him to calm down the frequency of the fires. We've only done it twice this year (not during this heat wave) and our neighbour complained (not very nicely) so we just don't do it anymore to save agro.

OH went round to the vicarage the vicar with some children had a huge bonfire going next to the bushes and below the trees. He politely told him it was foolish to do this in such hot drought weather. I would call the fire service for advice.

Tbh I'd ban bonfires in gardens totally.

They are dangerous, unnecessary and anti social - especially so in hot weather.

TheQueef · 01/07/2018 18:58

Not every night. That's unfair.

LeeBee11 · 01/07/2018 19:13

That would really bother me. I'd be fuming if I had washing out. How selfish!! What are these people burning anyway?

HelenaDove · 01/07/2018 19:14

Fucking morons...........if the fire brigade has to come out they should be made to pay the cost.

Mari50 · 01/07/2018 19:24

My neighbour is totally useless in the garden, he burns his waste in a chiminea and smokes out the entire neighbourhood as he does it.
I’d rather he made a bonfire and burnt it quickly but YANBU, it’s inconsiderate and selfish and unless you donmy get garden waste pick up (we do) it’s pointless...

FurryDice · 01/07/2018 19:33

Selfish and very stupid arseholes.

OldBean2 · 01/07/2018 19:34

I think you will probably find he is contravening local bye-laws, most usually say that bonfires can only be burnt after dusk. Call the Council and they will write or visit.

Here is one councils take on it.
