Neighbour keeps opening my post?

I lived in a rented house for a year then the landlord wanted us out. Unforeseen circumstances which meant they needed to live there.
We were in a bit of a fix but fortunately for us the house two doors down became available to rent so we moved in there. Leaving a big gap between the time we left and they needed to move in.

The old house was let out again, I'm assuming short term to bridge the gap between them moving back in.

Obviously when you move there's a lot of things that need your updated change of address and all the main things, bills etc are changed over.
Things that hadn't been, Tesco clubcard, pets at home card- things like that.
When new tenants moved in I introduced myself, it's a very friendly and neighbourly street and said sorry if any post comes for me I'm just two doors down now if you wouldn't mind popping it in or I can collect it.
Giving mine and DP's name so she knows it's ours.
As all these forgotten things arrive I change the addresses over as I go.
New tenant was very nice about it and did Pop things through my letter box so she knows who they're for but I started to notice that letters had been opened.

They're not important things, mostly junk mail but opened none the less.
My pets at home parcel was missing the mini bag of cat treats too.
I didn't say anything because they're not there for long and the mail isn't that important but thought it was odd.

Recently I went back on to amazon prime after cancelling 6 months ago. Ordered something on my phone app (a small toy) and just clicked the 'buy now' not thinking about the address change.
Got a text yesterday saying when it would be delivered and was in- wasn't until I got the text saying it had been delivered did I realised it was to the old address. These texts are pretty much automatic as soon as it arrives.
Instantly went and knocked but no one answered so I thought it was delivered through the letterbox and no one was home. more fool me for not checking the address, I'd have to wait.
No one came by with it, fine. Knocked myself around midday and they were home. Took a good 5 mins of hunting (by them) for this parcel that arrived yesterday.
They then appear with it, opened. The toy box is handed to me with the packaging separately with some excuse about them not knowing my name so didn't know who it was for then closed the door.
Also if it makes any difference, far too large a box to go through the letterbox so someone must have taken it in.

They said they had more letters for me 'somewhere' but will bring them round later.
Once they've checked the contents no doubt.
AIBU thinking these neighbours are taking the piss rifling through my mail and opening my package?

I don't think it's an excuse that they open anything received assuming it was theirs.
If you live alone maybe but if you live with any other adult you don't automatically open everything.

I don't open my DP post.

There are 3 adults living there.

The landlords relative went to the empty house, retrieved your mail and posted it through your letter box. That was very nice of them and above and beyond what they should have done. Did you not realise at this point how unreasonable you were to expect them to do that for you? Do you like people being your servant of something?

Now the new tenant moves in. You’ve had weeks to sort your mail out. But haven’t. Lesson in life is don’t expect other people to do your work for them. You’re definitely a cheeky fucker and had you actually redirected the mail instead of relying on others, none of this would have happened.

As for the parcel. Well we will never know if they would have given it to you untouched had this been a one off episode.

ThreeIsACharm · 01/07/2018 18:34

When I moved into my flat I constantly got mail for the last person.
I opened it and it was sent collection letters from bailiffs threating to come to the flat.
I had to phone the company and explain.
Maybe they are worried about that. Or they thunk you are up to something dodgey.
Keeping your cat treats is just bizarre.

ThreeIsACharm · 01/07/2018 18:34

*debt sorry

dadshere · 01/07/2018 18:37

Even when you pay to have your mail redirected it still often goes to your old address, I know, it has happened to us!

Floralnomad · 01/07/2018 18:39

Just because you don’t open your partners post doesn’t mean other people don’t , I don’t think my dh has opened a letter for over 20 yrs except birthday cards , if I left his post for him it would never get looked at . I only check the name on post / parcels here because adult ds gets lots of stuff delivered and I don’t open his unless he specifically asks me to .

Move2WY · 01/07/2018 18:42

Every person telling you to redirect the post is completely missing the point that the tenants and behaving badly and criminally.

Op didn’t come on for a request on how to fix it. Yes OP they are taking the piss

SilverySurfer · 01/07/2018 18:48

Your drip feeds don't help, OP. You were unreasonable and a CF but problem now solved. Not rocket science is it.

SickOfSitting · 01/07/2018 18:50

The people who used to live at my address kept having debt collection letters sent to my address. One day they had a package delivered to my house "because they forgot to update the address." It was left behind my bin, which they "collected " by stalking my house! So it was marked as "delivered " to my address by whether it was paid for I don't know? One day I came home to find a New Look bag behind a plant pot in the name of the old neighbours. I took it straight back to new look and said they don't live here! Last thing I need is new look saying the package was delivered to my address but not paid for!

Just pay for mail re-direction! That way even the niggly address changing things like clubcard, boots advantage card, pets at home etc will be changed.

SickOfSitting · 01/07/2018 18:59

And who cares if it's double the price for two people to re-direct mail. You don't live there, they aren't under any obligation to give you your mail, so if you want your mail -pay the money. It's not forever!

pollysproggle · 01/07/2018 19:02

I've tried not to give too much personal information about the tenants but I'll says it's 3 adults- not related. So wouldn't think they'd open each other's Mail.

Yes they did, without a problem. The relative manages the property as the landlord is not local- I've never met the actual landlord.

Is it so hard to believe that people do things for others without being their servant? I didn't expect it, they did it because they are nice, we like each other and have had a good tenant/landlord relationship.
They didn't come everyday to the properly just for that service- when they had to do viewings now and then it was done as we now live two doors away and easy for them to do so. What is the problem with that?

They surely can't suspect me of fraud- I live two doors away.
Anyway if bailiffs come knocking (they won't) it would be easy for them to redirect them to me, or is that being my servant again?

TheLionRoars1110 · 01/07/2018 19:18

The ppl who used to live here still haven't updated their details 4 years later. We've had the police round looking for them which has been very stressful.
I think I'd now be very wary of handing over post to someone who's moved out. I'd RTS every time. It's harsh but maybe the tenant had a similar experience? Opening the parcel is not on though!!

afishnotabird · 01/07/2018 19:36

Off topic, but I was well annoyed to find out Royal Mail charge per surname - it takes little to no extra effort for the postie if it's the same address

TorviBrightspear · 01/07/2018 19:58

Redirections don't always work, and Royal Mail don't actually give a shit if they keep delivering stuff to the old address.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/07/2018 19:59

What is the problem with that? You’re no longer the tenant. They should not have to continue to deal with you once you’re no longer the tenant. Seeing as you had a good chunk of time in between the old tenants moving out, I expect they thought they were being nice doing you a favour until you got your act together. But instead you expected the new tenants to do the same. Except they don’t want to. And now you’re complaining about you not sorting your mail out.

I can’t believe you’ve quoted my entire post but still can’t see you’re unreasonable.

CallMeLolita · 01/07/2018 20:04

pollysproggle is seriously consider viewing your credit report.

They have so much information on you that they could easily sign up for a mail order account, credit card in your name. All the orders, cards, PIN numbers would be sent straight to them.

At least with a report you can see applications made by “you” in the last six months.

Are you on the electoral roll at that house?

pollysproggle · 01/07/2018 20:16

Mummyofdragons

We do things everyday we're not obliged to do nor are forced into as servants.
We do things to be kind, be neighbourly or just because we can- even if inconvenient.

I'm not saying my neighbours have to do anything for me- I've never said that. I asked, they obliged. They've asked things of me, I've obliged.
The point of the post was that they opened my mail and parcel. They didn't even have to take in the parcel if they didn't want to but they did and opened it.
I admit I could have redirected and avoided it but I didn't so what's done is done. That's my fault, fine and all done now.
My acting landlord shouldn't have to deal with me once I'm no longer the tenant but they did- what's your problem with that?

OP posts:
pollysproggle · 01/07/2018 20:19

Thanks callmelolita

I hadn't thought of that- I'm sure it's nothing like that but it's worth a check.

Whatdoido2018 · 01/07/2018 22:40

I still get post for the owner who left in 2008! Just yesterday I opened one without realising it wasn't for me. I'm the only adult in this house so I just grabbed the (face down) letter from my doormat, opened it (still face down) and only noticed the name when looking at the debt letter.

My point, is that they may have done the same when opening things. I'm guessing it's not every single letter?!
