To not have gotten up in the middle of the night to kill a spider!

I know I'm not but this is to prove a point to hubby! He is in a mood with me because just before he came to bed last night (around 1am or so) he went to the kitchen to get a drink and came across a massive spider.

He then came in to bed and proceeded to wake me up and ask would I go and get rid of it for him Hmm. Bare in mind I am 25 weeks pregnant and sleeping in this heat has been very hard so I wasn't too pleased to be woken up!

Obviously I said no and went back to sleep, he was gutted and has carried on being annoyed with me this morning Grin (he's also annoyed that the spider has now gone missing and says he's not safe Hmm- although he is arachnophobic so I do have a slight bit of sympathy for him) but all in all who was being unreasonable GrinGrin

YANBU however I'm terrified of spiders (irrational I know!) and my husband would get up because he knows how much it bothers me. Id be pretty upset if he didn't, it's all totally irrational I know but he knew the deal when he married me lol. Phobias aren't rational, I appreciate it's hard to understand if it doesn't bother you.

diodati · 01/07/2018 11:25

@Shumpalumpa Oh, cool your jets! I know a lot about phobias because I've experienced one and gradually learned to understand it and overcome it. Pregnancy is not an illness, after all. Uncomfortable certainly but not incapable of getting out of bed to see to a spider, especially if she knows her partner is suffering. And unless the OP suffers from insomnia, she'll go back to sleep, whereas the OP's husband won't get much sleep at all. From a purely selfish POV, she'd do better with a well-rested husband than a tired and grumpy one. Besides, he would technically owe her one! Lighten up (instead of labeling me, for example.) Sheesh!

And unless the OP suffers from insomnia, she'll go back to sleep, whereas the OP's husband won't get much sleep at all.

OP says she has been finding it very difficult to sleep in the heat, so she may as well have insomnia. Why does her DH's need for sleep trump hers?

And I think OP would prefer to be well rested herself and not tired and grumpy.

Besides, he would technically owe her one! Lighten up (instead of labeling me, for example.) Sheesh!

Laughing at the thought of someone using Hmm faces telling me to lighten up! 😂

YABU.

Spiders are evil having crawled straight from the pits of hell and should be killed as soon as you see one.

Your husband doesn't feel safe because the evil spider is now plotting ways to get him.

Your poor husband. Sad

diodati · 01/07/2018 11:51

@Shumpalumpa okay, then: have a big fat raspberry instead!

Glad i really want to go on the zoo course but have 2 children with v complex needs and i cant go away overnight. There arent any in my area i have looked .
Sorry for my arsy reply as well. I just get cross when people say get over it as if it is a simple choice and you are choosing to be pathetic over a silly little thing . I am aware it is ridiculous and irrational but that is the nature of a phobia .

GladAllOver · 01/07/2018 16:58

That's OK flapjack. I do know have severe phobias can be.

My friend was terrified of dogs after being frightened by one as a small child. It got so bad that she couldn't walk down the street on her own in case she met one. Eventually a GP recognised her distress and referred her to the local MH outpatients for a course of treatment. Like I said it was so successful that she now has a pet labrador and loves it.

Could you talk to your GP about it?

marymoosmum · 01/07/2018 17:31

As a terrible aracnaphobic I say you. There is nothing worse than knowing there is a massive spider in your house and not knowing where it is. I know your pregnant and it's hot as Hell, bit still. How would you like it if it was something your terrified of and he brushed only under the carpet like you were being silly?

lapenguin · 01/07/2018 17:36

Tbh I would hope my OH would catch it and do whatever with it as long as its out of my house. I am petrified of spiders. If it was the other way I would just do it. If he's up half the night worrying about a spider then you will be less likely to sleep anyway?

Bottleup · 01/07/2018 17:52

I would have helped him. Phobias that severe at debilitating. I suffered horrifically with arachnaphobia my whole life until two years ago i bit the bullet and want to gp. I was referred for CBT and am now cured and actually like spiders. It was harrowing at times (carrying real spiders around in my handbag( but) it's changed my life.

Hidingtonothing · 01/07/2018 18:14

My arachnophobia seems to be lessening with age and, unless they're really enormous, I am now able to let them be if I see one in the house and trust that they will either find their way outside or that my cats or dogs will eat them (sorry but natural consequence!) although I still can't bring myself to move them. When the phobia was still at its worst though I would have been really terrified about where it had gone and a bit hurt that DH hadn't moved it for me. He hasn't ever been 25 weeks pregnant though so that muddies the water on who is BU here for me Confused

GladAllOver · 01/07/2018 18:40

Congratulations Bottleup.! Thanks for coming on and confirming that the treatment is effective. Please spread the word to others affected by this horrible affliction.

lljkk · 01/07/2018 18:56

...7 legged spider. I let it stay in the house

How did it get fed in the house? All my house spiders get stupidly skinny, not enough other bugs to gnaw on, inside.

This thread reminds me of me & DS1 shrieking at some enormous weird-looking bug (June bug?) in DS's room. DD marched in to see what the fuss was about, exclaimed, "Ooh, what a pretty beetle!", caught it in her hands & evicted out the window.

Me & DS are So Lame. Blush

Frogletmamma · 01/07/2018 19:30

It probably ate all the food that DD leaves under the table
