To have told neighbour I wouldn’t lend them our lawn mower for this

They’ve lived here for 4 years and have never attempted to clear their garden properly. They have some form of copy-catiness and are always looking out the window at what we’re doing.

Dh and me cleaned the garden yesterday and they must have been watching again. Today she messaged me to ask if I have any “powerful” tools to clear the garden (like I’m some kind of lumberjack)

She came around and asked to see the lawn mower as hers is crap, and I told her Dh said not to attempt to cut that growth with the lawn mower as it will break. To cut down the plants and trees and then use the mower on grass only. She left pissed off i think as she’s not replying to my message about Gardener recommendation.

I don’t want to drip feed but what’s pissed me off is that they have 3/4 holidays a year (2 abroad) and she said it’s too expensive to have someone come and clean it as they’re quoting £200-1000. Also I told her to burn the grass/cuttings like we did with the big clean and she made a face like it was a nasty thing to do. I mean wth?

I'm sorry, but this Grin
they don't phone the pied piper

Knotweed isn't a danger to humans or animals. You can eat it, it's like rhubarb...

“Also I told her to burn the grass/cuttings like we did with the big clean and she made a face like it was a nasty thing to do.”

That is because it is a nasty thing to do. Bonfires are a great way to piss off your neighbours. We have a green bin for garden rubbish, and a compost heap. Failing that I take any left over garden rubbish to the tip. Why don't you have a bin for garden refuse?

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 30/06/2018 23:19

They need a pig. That would clear it and fertilize it.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 30/06/2018 23:20

Forgot the .

PitterPatterOfBigFeet · 30/06/2018 23:24

YADNBU to not lend her the mower - I can't even imagine what the mower is going to do to that lot!

YABU to worry about the state of their garden - an overgrown garden is not going to attract rats. Food attracts rats.

TheMaddHugger · 30/06/2018 23:51

glad I don't live near you OP. I'd be compelled to ((Hugs)) You with your face held over that nasty burning pile of asthma inducing shite.

TheMaddHugger · 30/06/2018 23:52

Ps, I had an old Gent next door for a decade and he burnt rubbish Every Fricken day

TheMaddHugger · 30/06/2018 23:54

^^ except in Fire Bans [Australia]

Craftsandfun · 01/07/2018 00:08

Oh fuck off. This thread isn’t about me burning garden waste (which isn’t illegal and so I’ll do it again when and if needed). Not the first and won’t be the last.

Hmm
Ethylred · 01/07/2018 00:17

Crafts, you've turned this into a thread about you. Well done,
you're the first arsehole of July.

Kismett · 01/07/2018 00:50

I can't garden much because of my allergies. There's no medicine that can change that for me, so it's all up to my husband. It's not laziness, and it's annoying that people think otherwise. I do find smoke awful for my asthma as well, but we can't have windows open anyway because of my allergies. If someone lights a BBQ or starts cutting grass, I have to go inside and shower.

SarfE4sticated · 01/07/2018 00:51

I took 2 cars full of green waste to the tip on Friday, it all gets sent to a machine and chipped down and composted - very satisfying. Burning is a bit yukky op, just shove it in the boot and get it to the tip, it's extremely cathartic.

RedDwarves · 01/07/2018 00:57

I think burning in a small backyard with neighbours in close proximity is antisocial. It's quite a different story when you have got some land and therefore some distance between you and your neighbours.

Not only that, but where I live at least, you can take green waste to the tip for a few quid.

safariboot · 01/07/2018 01:04

It's your mower. You are damn well not unreasonable to keep your stuff to yourself.

Anyway that's blatantly not a job for a mower. It needs a strimmer, a nice powerful one. Or shears would do it.

liverbird10 · 01/07/2018 12:40

Simply chase her and her DH round the garden with a huge pair of shears. That should give 'em a hint.

LoniceraJaponica · 01/07/2018 12:46

RedDwarves taking garden waste to the local recycling centre is free where I live.

JamPasty · 01/07/2018 13:51

Why in heck, if you care about your garden, would you burn clippings instead of composting them? What an absolute waste of nutrients

52FestiveRoad · 01/07/2018 14:38

Oh fuck off. This thread isn’t about me burning garden waste (which isn’t illegal and so I’ll do it again when and if needed). Not the first and won’t be the last.

Well you did bring it up in your thread. Keeping an untidy garden or asking your neighbour if you can borrow a lawnmower is not illegal either, but clearly you want us to agree how terrible your neighbour is and not focus on your unnecessary, polluting fires.Hmm

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/07/2018 15:57

Why in heck, if you care about your garden, would you burn clippings instead of composting them? because if your sole concern about a garden is that it should look "nice and tidy" with a green desert lawn, you don't care about your 'garden' in any sense of the word that a real gardener would understand.

Craftsandfun · 01/07/2018 17:16

My garden is very green thanks with flowers, apple, cherry and plum tree and a grape vine. It’s a massive over 100ft garden so when I burnt my fire to get rid off overgrown branches and clippings the smoke wasn’t drifting up and straight into people’s houses. And just FYI, (not that I need to justify myself to you or anyone else) I burnt it whilst it was still chilly so most windows were shut anyway. Thanks for your concern.

Funny how one of our most popular celebrations revolves around lighting bonfires Hmm.

I'd love to get my hands on that garden ! I cleared my NDN completely overgrown garden yesterday.

MrMeSeeks · 01/07/2018 17:30

So you always get this pleasant when people says things you dont agree with?

And for asthmatics neighbours burning things in their garden is antisocial and potentially dangerous.
