To understand that Autism is NOT a mental illness?

Oxfordblue · 30/06/2018 16:24

Just that really, someone posted that autism is a mental illness.
I understand autism to be a different way of thinking/perceiving etc. Not an illness that one may or may not recover from Confused

(My daughter is waiting for an assessment for autism & I would hate her to feel that she 'has a mental illness' & actually find that statement so disempowering. The world needs people to think differently, to challenge ideas that maybe set in stone & blur the idea that one size fits all.)

SoddingUnicorns · 03/07/2018 17:02

Can it have a giant banana in a red circle crossed out please?

WonderBoy · 03/07/2018 17:07

As a member of the Anti-Banana Brigade, Sodding, if that's what you want, that's what you can have.

We're Pro-Banana in WB Castle, but all banana affiliations welcome.

SoddingUnicorns · 03/07/2018 17:09

We could do anti on the back and pro on the front Grin inclusive differently banana’d people!

WonderBoy · 03/07/2018 17:14

Great idea, Sodding.

Our other t-shirt available to order if you're interested is:

SoddingUnicorns · 03/07/2018 17:16

RoboJesus · 03/07/2018 17:18

Oh god, what did I start!? 🍌

SoddingUnicorns · 03/07/2018 17:21

An inclusive differently banana’d movement with props Grin

Now if only it was that simple to bring the entire autistic community (I’m including advocates for carers/parents of non verbal autistic people too) together this way.

Wouldn’t it be lovely?

WonderBoy · 03/07/2018 17:22

Have it made up, Sodding. Wear it with pride. Our gift to you! Wink

SoddingUnicorns · 03/07/2018 17:26

You know I think I might Grin

More controversy. Wait for it... I don't like peanut butter.

Battleax · 03/07/2018 17:53

You could say that staff Grin

What the hell do you put in a peanut butter and banana sandwich Perf? Shock

SoddingUnicorns · 03/07/2018 17:54

I hate smooth peanut butter because it sticks to your mouth but I like crunchy on cold granary toast.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 03/07/2018 17:57

I never eat them Battleax. Shock

I usually have a banana either before or after breakfast.

SoddingUnicorns · 03/07/2018 17:59

Banana sandwiches aaaaargh!

On the serious side I can’t function at all when I’m about to melt down. Literally can not cope with anything or anyone.

Battleax · 03/07/2018 17:59

I wonder if banana and marmite is a viable alternative?

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 03/07/2018 18:03

I've never tried it Battleax, I'm almost scared to.

Battleax · 03/07/2018 18:04

I don’t blame you Grin

Ooh no I love marmite on a buttery crumpet or cold white toast.

ThinkingTed · 03/07/2018 18:18

When you come back to a thread a few days later and everyone is talking about bananas 😂

DD1 had her 4th and final choice clinician appointment at CAMHS today for anxiety and not attending school. The views I read and received on here from pps was really helpful in me supporting her and letting her voice be heard. So thank you Flowers.

To go back to the OP, CAMHS are discharging her and referring to any organisation that will take a referral as autism is not a mental illness therefore she doesn't meet their needs requirement.
