To understand that Autism is NOT a mental illness?

Oxfordblue · 30/06/2018 16:24

Just that really, someone posted that autism is a mental illness.
I understand autism to be a different way of thinking/perceiving etc. Not an illness that one may or may not recover from Confused

(My daughter is waiting for an assessment for autism & I would hate her to feel that she 'has a mental illness' & actually find that statement so disempowering. The world needs people to think differently, to challenge ideas that maybe set in stone & blur the idea that one size fits all.)

TerfsUp I made a very simple typo in putting " instead of * when trying to put your username in bold Confused

MephistophelesApprentice · 02/07/2018 17:03

It is a mental illness caused by a neurostructural deficit and is currently incurable.

I don't know how anyone could live as even an HFA sufferer and not appreciate this. Pretending otherwise is a comforting delusion, but it's simply untrue. I'm on the spectrum and I refuse to live my life pretending that a lie is the truth because it comforts those around me or deludes me into thinking I'm special. I'm not. I was born broken, nobodies fault, can't be fixed and I've just got to try and pull my weight as much as I can and be incredibly grateful each day for the support I've been given.

DetectiveGoren · 02/07/2018 17:15

Mephistopheles - How could autism be a mental illness though? Autism is something people are born with, whereas anyone can develop a mental illness within their lifetime. But a person can't develop autism now, can they?

WonderBoy · 02/07/2018 17:15

Feline sweary here too 😸 Glad to be of service, staffie.

SoddingUnicorns · 02/07/2018 17:16

Thanks staffiegirl I’m sorry to hear you had a crap day Flowers

Nikephorus · 02/07/2018 17:17

Recommends filling moat with crocodiles and the odd very hungry great white shark.....

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 02/07/2018 17:17

This is what I mean. DH came in and said "is the oven still on?" I said "yes, because I'm still cooking supper." He told me not to take it so harshly. I wasn't, but why complain about something you can do nothing about? Confused I don't understand NT people.

SoddingUnicorns · 02/07/2018 17:19

Nikephorus this moat is sounding better by the second!

SoddingUnicorns · 02/07/2018 17:20

@PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks neither do I. Surely he realised if he wasn’t eating then the meal wasn’t ready?

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 02/07/2018 17:25

Oh, and:

DH: "The DC can have their TV now."

Me: "Thanks, but DD never watches TV and it's DS2's bedtime."

DH gives me a pissed off look.

WTF? Confused

Nikephorus · 02/07/2018 17:25

I trust that the drawbridge has a portcullis with nice sharp points at the bottom? And slits at the bit over the top of it to enable the pouring of boiling oil over anyone who does escape the wildlife?
(am now thinking of digging up front garden to accommodate own moat etc.)

SoddingUnicorns · 02/07/2018 17:27

@PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks that does sound frustrating! Mine is NT but thankfully logical and “gets it”.

Nike you’re actually describing my ideal home now Grin

TerfsUp · 02/07/2018 17:28

Dear God in heaven. How many times does it need to be repeated until the terminally stupid understand that autism is NOT a mental illness? It is a neurological condition. And, no, it is not caused by a neurostructural deficit.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 02/07/2018 17:29

We don't have a front garden. I'd need a pneumatic drill, but I think the landlord might have something to say about it... 😂

SoddingUnicorns · 02/07/2018 17:32

“Terminally stupid” Grin if nothing else my vocabulary for dealing with twats has been significantly expanded thanks to this thread!

Ooh I’m wondering if I can dig up monoblocking with a pneumatic drill now!

SoddingUnicorns · 02/07/2018 17:33

And what the fuck is a “neurostructural deficit”?

I don’t like deficit, it implies we’re missing something. Which is ironic.

WonderBoy · 02/07/2018 17:33

Believe me, Nike, just one glorious WB in meltdown would be enough, especially if said meltdown is caused by inconsiderate disablist ar*es. Our sharks are mainly for decorative purposes, unless of course WB is having a good day.

Yes, because if there’s one demographic known for taking comfort in myth, rather than our fondness for fact, it’s us HFAs 🙄

You’re Just plain old fashioned wrong, Meph. Sorry.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 02/07/2018 17:37

Sodding 😂

WonderBoy · 02/07/2018 17:38

You can feed your landlord to our sharks, Perfectly. Happy to help you too.

Battleax · 02/07/2018 17:40

**

We need carrier pigeons. Who’s got some of them?

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 02/07/2018 17:41
WonderBoy · 02/07/2018 17:41

Sodding, it's perfectly alright, I have a deficit of a large G&T, and WB has a deficit of a large piece of cake.
