How do your ask your children whether they've brushed their teeth?

SmashedMug · 30/06/2018 13:50

Using lighthearted in the title doesn't make a bitchy post any less bitchy.

JaneJeffer · 30/06/2018 13:57

Wow you're so clever OP

mimibunz · 30/06/2018 14:01

Teeth. Brushed them, have you?

Birdsgottafly · 30/06/2018 14:08

RoboticSealpup and the audience get to either laugh at the joke, or give a wtf knobhead?, answer.

RoboticSealpup · 30/06/2018 16:05

Hell hath no fury like a British person who thinks that someone has made a derogatory comment about their social class! I was just talking about words, but then I'm a clueless European...

OP posts:
Teggun · 30/06/2018 16:18

This error only arises because could've and should've sound very much like could of and should of. People don't randomly substitute words so your joke tactic makes no sense.

elQuintoConyo · 30/06/2018 16:25

Yay, another cunty grammar thread! It likes me! Grin

Fi1982 · 30/06/2018 16:34

but then I'm a clueless European...

Accidentally converts a few Remainers...

RoboticSealpup · 30/06/2018 16:45

This error only arises because could've and should've sound very much like could of and should of.

I understand that this is why people say it, but they don't look the same, so why do people write it?

OP posts:
RoboticSealpup · 30/06/2018 16:48

I bet you're a riot at dinner parties

I bet you are too if you're this easily offended IRL.

OP posts:
SmashedMug · 30/06/2018 17:04

I understand that this is why people say it, but they don't look the same, so why do people write it?

Because they are thick and so so so stooooooopid for writing like they talk. Is that the answer you're looking for?

Does it really really matter why they do? 😂

RoboticSealpup · 30/06/2018 17:08

I get it now. You guys think that only very uneducated and stupid people write like this. That's why you're so offended on their behalf. I don't agree. I've seen pretty smart people write like this.

OP posts:
SmashedMug · 30/06/2018 17:13

They can't be smart if they make SUCH HORRENDOUS AND SOUL DESTROYING grammar mistakes Shock

RoboticSealpup · 30/06/2018 17:16

You forgot to put quotes around "HORRENDOUS" and "SOUL DESTROYING". (Seeing as you're pretending to quote me.)

OP posts:
SenecaFalls · 30/06/2018 17:17

I understand that this is why people say it, but they don't look the same, so why do people write it?

So you do understand this, OP. That makes your original post even more confounding, unless, of course, you know a lot of people who are in the habit of writing notes to their children to ask them if they have brushed their teeth.

SmashedMug · 30/06/2018 17:19

DONT MOCK MY GRAMMAR ISSUES. I COULD OF DUN IT IFF I WONTID.

Teggun · 30/06/2018 17:21

I understand that this is why peoplesayit, but they don'tlookthe same, so why do peoplewrite it?

Because when people write they talk through what they are going to write in their mind. They 'hear what they are going to write they don't picture it. Or maybe I should say the people who don't pick up on the error visually are the ones that are planning aurally.

Furrycushion · 30/06/2018 17:23

I say would've, could've, but I know it's not "of" & I would never write it. The mistake comes because of what people hear, not using of instead of have in various random places.

Teggun · 30/06/2018 17:24

So to ask what these people would say when asking if someone has brushed their teeth make a no sense. The spoken pattern of that phrase causes no aural confusion

crispysausagerolls · 30/06/2018 17:33

Tbf to OP, people using “could of” etc instead of “could have” is so.fucking.annoying! And worryingly common!

unicornfarts · 30/06/2018 17:38

Also I don't think people actually write this kind of thing anywhere near enough, and have it corrected, to make a difference. Report/ essay/ creative writing that is reviewed and given back for correction is massively in decline.

ScrubTheDecks · 30/06/2018 17:38

Can we move on to people who say ‘brought’ to mean ‘purchased’?

bluemoonchances · 30/06/2018 18:31

My pet hate is when people say "generally " instead of "genuinely"... someone in my office does this but I don't know her well enough to correct her!
