AIBU to be upset - toddler growing up too quickly

I posted this on the parenting thread but haven’t had any responses so thought I’d post here for traffic.

DD is 2.5, but recently she’s started saying things that I’d expect from a much older child. Tonight’s example, when putting her to bed, I tried to cuddle her and she said ‘get off, I too big for cwtches’. So I just sat next to her and said ‘you’ll never be too big for a cwtch from mammy’. Her response? ‘I don’t need you Mammy, I a big girl’. It completely crushed me 😢

Am I being too sensitive? Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Yanbu to be upset. Of course you aren't.

If it helps at all when my eldest was little she didn't want to be held/cuddled at all but now at six she's desperate to be held and cuddled up to.

Aww OP Flowers it's just the age she is. She's learning to assert her boundaries and understand her own sense of having a distinct self. Don't take it to heart! This isn't the end of cuddles for her. She's just learning how to make independent decisions. I wouldn't make a big deal about it - just smile and tell her it's ok and then indulge the cuddles when they do come!

This doesn't mean she is suddenly growing up; she is just trying out something new to say. When mine was that age, she once told me that she didn't want me for a mummy (can't remember what I'd done), and that when she was grown up she wouldn't have to have me for a mummy because I'd be dead by then.

Dd is now 21 and we are still very close. She shows every sign of still wanting me for a mummy. I otoh have no intention of dropping dead.

2yos don't have the maturity to understand how they come across; they say things and then they forget about it and say something totally different. You need to learn to let it wash over you.

I can usually laugh these sort of things off, but it’s been a long few days with very little sleep. Thanks for making me feel better 🙂

My just turned 2 says this kind of thing. She doesn’t want me, or when I call her my special baby, she says “not I’m not, I’m (her name)”, with a very defiant look!

I think they are just becoming much more aware of themselves as individuals.

YANBU it seems every age milestone comes around so quickly. My dd just celebrated her 18 th birthday and i am shocked how time just flew by. Flowers
