to ask for your uti/sex tips!

I thought about just putting 'sex tips' in the subject but that would be misleading.

I had a UTI, and got 3 days worth of antibiotics. The UTI seemed to go away. Then yesterday me and DH had sex and then today I felt like I had a much worse UTI that I really couldn't cope with! Went to doctor today, who confirmed infection and gave me 5 days of antibiotics. I didn't discuss the sex thing with this doctor (it was a walk in clinic and he had kind of solved the immediate problem I hope).

I am not going in to work because I don't feel well. I feel guilty though because I am feeling better by the moment...

But let me put the time to good use and get your help with this. Do I need to not have sex? Or do something differently? I already wash and wee straight after sex.

Cranberry hasn’t been shown not to work. The recent studies haven’t definitively shown it to work which is quite different. Hence they still advise it. For me it’s been quite clear- the times I haven’t had it , I got a uti. Every time. The times I have, zero utis. That seems a good enough result for me!

My Doctor recommended lube, it made things worse for me unfortunately although you can only try.

badger2005 · 29/06/2018 14:23

Thanks so much everyone. I will try the cranberry - drink or tablets. And condoms. Sounds like the jury is still out on lube...

had uti and kidney infections whole life.
not sex related/doc told me to drink cranberry juice.not the cran cocktails but full on cran juice.haven't had one in 40 yrs and still drink it daily.great source of vitamins.if you do the pills dronk lots of water so kidneys can process it.
alcohol, carbonated drinks ,artificial sweetners can all contribute to uti's
and a health piss after sex is also recommended.a little tinkle is not going to do it.

blackteasplease · 29/06/2018 15:11

I would wee beforehand as well as after.

Don't have sex til you feel better. Why would you? if you feel ill surely you don't feel like sex.

Seconding the comment about Waterfall D Mannose. 👍🏻
It's magical stuff - it sort of velcroes the bacteria out and you start to feel better after about 30 mins of taking it. Have a read of the SweetCures site about why cranberry makes UTIs worse. All sensible science.

badger2005 · 29/06/2018 16:41

Wait - mrjoepike what is a health piss?

Wee before and after.

I also drink a pint of water after. I can sometimes feel a UTI coming on so I drink even more water. Water is the only thing that really helps for me.

IrnBruOo · 29/06/2018 17:18

I always try and pee before and after sex. Seems to help

CaledonianQueen · 29/06/2018 17:38

I was recommended the D-Mannose, unfortunately it didn’t work for me and it was the infection that I ended up taking septicaemia with (I had been on D-Mannose for over a month when I took septicaemia).I won’t try it again as it is the only thing that was different for me that time. So I am too frightened to give it another go.

I make sure to drink A LOT of water too, I can ward off an infection if I drink enough at the onset of infection.

Came back in this thread to say I was horrified to read CaledonianQueen's comment!
NHS guidance is to visit your GP if a UTI doesn't improve within a few days, never mind FOUR WEEKS. There's no way anybody should be taking a complementary therapy when all the symptoms suggest that a trip to the doctor is in order.

It's absolutely not the fault of Waterfall D-Mannose that this situation arose, and I feel a bit frustrated because stories like this act as scare-mongering around a very effective remedy that works for a lot of people. And no I don't sell the stuff. Smile

CaledonianQueen · 02/07/2018 01:42

Ordinary Girl you know nothing of the situation leading up to my contracting Septicaemia. FYI I did not wait four weeks to see a Dr about a UTI, I had one serious UTI/ kidney infection that I had been continually fighting but never getting rid of for OVER A YEAR! During that time I was frequently prescribed antibiotics and had two lots of antibiotics during (the four week period that I was taking D- Mannose) the lead up to my septicaemia. For that entire year I would be put on antibiotics then the symptoms improved enough for me to think the infection was clear and then within a fortnight I would be back calling the g.p out because it was back as bad as ever! The fact is, that I had this going on over FOUR WEEKS, whilst taking the D-Mannose and the two separate courses of antibiotics I had been prescribed! The D-Mannose DID NOT HELP ME, that is my experience and it is valid! Having had the same situation ongoing for a year, the fact remains that the only difference in the run up to my developing septicaemia was the D-Mannose!

I NEARLY DIED!!!

Forgive me if I don’t want to take the risk of trying it again! I spent over a week in High Dependency, I do not want to return there! Nor do I want to die age 36, leaving my husband and two children behind! So keep your assumptions to yourself as they are bullshit!

I came on here to offer the OP support, I merely mentioned that it didn’t work for me! Fanfuckingtastic if it worked for you, I am waiting on surgery to change my catheter to suprapubic to hopefully reduce infection, if that doesn’t work then they will wash my bladder out apparently. My urethra is wrecked, due to bladder spasms during infection pushing my fully inflated catheter out several times!

Don’t you think I would rather take this bloody wonder drug / supplement than go through the constant kidney infections (because it always affects my kidneys) and surgery? I had high hopes for D-Mannose, I wish it had been highly effective with me! Unfortunately it didn’t help AT ALL and for whatever reason I ended up seriously ill with septicaemia! So yes I am TERRIFIED to try it again. But I’m not allowed to say that as it’s scaremongering........

Newsflash, not everybody responds to the same treatment! Just because it worked for you, does NOT mean it will work for everyone else! To call my experience scaremongering is RUDE! To call my fear of trying it again scaremongering is NASTY!

Before I get accused of trolling, I will add that I frequently had urine samples sent to the lab only for there to be no growth! Even when I clearly was fighting a massive infection there was no growth in the lab! So my G.P’s were shooting in the dark with prescribing antibiotics! The intravenous antibiotics they gave me for urinary sepsis finally cleared me, as well as a further ten day course of 2000mg of Amoxycillan given three times a day!

OrdinaryGirl · 02/07/2018 06:23

I repent, in dust and ashes.
