Hosepipe ban... really!?

So, we lose days of learning in the winter (most winters now - I understand it didn’t use to be so often.)

Now, we can’t use our water supply when we most need it!

We’ve had floods this year. Floods!!

AIBU to be pissed off that just as the kids finish school with dreams of lazy days spent with the paddling pool getting full use, our shitty infrastructure lets us down once again?

It said on the news there are some areas in England that didn’t have any water yesterday which is why they’ve introduced the hosepipe ban.

NotTakenUsername · 29/06/2018 10:14

I understand the reason for the ban. But why have they run out of water? It’s not like we are usually short of rain.

Are we on a hosepipe ban? It’s been red hot here for weeks. But didn’t know about ban!

SoddingUnicorns · 29/06/2018 10:15

No I can see that point tbf, it does seem a bit odd. How long is it in place for?

NotTakenUsername · 29/06/2018 10:15

They are starting to come in in certain areas.

It's nothing new though

Some places in the world don't have access to any clean water and here you are moaning your kids can't go in a paddling pool!?

soulrider · 29/06/2018 10:16

We've been asked to avoid using hosepipes and sprinklers but no ban as such.

The problem here is not a lack of water in the reservoirs but that they cannot treat it and get it into the system fast enough to keep up with demand so creating airlocks.

RunMummyRun68 · 29/06/2018 10:17

And they Haven't 'run out of water'.... it's a preventative measure

brieislife · 29/06/2018 10:18

It’s barely rained where I am for about 6 weeks so this isn’t a surprise. My poor garden is all cracked.

runningkeenster · 29/06/2018 10:18

There should absolutely be a hosepipe ban. All it means is that you can't water your lawns.

Lawns don't need watering anyway, as soon as it rains, they'll recover. If you have other plants that are suffering use your water butt and a watering can. A paddling pool can be filled up without a hose, just means it takes a bit longer.

I hate to see people wasting water via sprinklers and hoses. Your grass is not important enough to waste an important resource.

PositiveVibez · 29/06/2018 10:19

🙄 Always one on MN using the extreme example.

thanks, that makes more sense.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 29/06/2018 10:21

I am not against a ban when it is necessary, but one of the joys of summer is getting a face full of water in the sweltering heat and run around getting muddy.

Some places in the world don't have access to any clean water and here you are moaning your kids can't go in a paddling pool!? What does it have to do with anything? The world is a pit of misery and horror, does it mean we have to stop doing anything remotely fun or conformable and just live in quiet contemplation?

cloudtree · 29/06/2018 10:21

Its about their ability to process the water quickly enough. Its been extremely hot and dry and so I'm not sure why this would come as a surprise.

RunMummyRun68 · 29/06/2018 10:21

Yep vibez I absolutely am!!! So what!

SoddingUnicorns · 29/06/2018 10:22

By that reckoning you shouldn’t be using the internet because some people don’t have access to it Wink

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 29/06/2018 10:24

A paddling pool can be filled up without a hose, just means it takes a bit longer.

Errrm this has confused my brain surely when the Op says she cannot use the paddling pool it is because it is considered a waste of water not because she cannot be arsed to fill a bucket up and tip it into the pool repeatedly? It would be the same amount of water whether she used a hose, a watering can or a bucket surely?

On a side not I agree imposing a ban is daft but we all know it's not going to last forever, as soon as the schools break up we will no doubt be looking at 6 weeks of rain. Grin

Osirus · 29/06/2018 10:25

What areas have an actual ban? They’ve not said that on th BBC, just that water demand was higher than supply yesterday and be careful with usage, but there is no ban yet?

If you are going to fill up the pool without the hose you’re still using the same water surely?! Just use the hose!

AdoraBell · 29/06/2018 10:25

Anyone know if the South West has a ban? We’re away from home and Google isn’t being helpful.

PositiveVibez · 29/06/2018 10:26

Yep vibez I absolutely am!!! So what!

So by your reckoning, we shouldn't eat tea because there are some people starving in the world?

RunMummyRun68 · 29/06/2018 10:27

I take it back. Not even other countries

Let's ban all hosepipes completely and instead have a free tap in every major town and city

DGRossetti · 29/06/2018 10:29

Brummies bought a valley in Wales 100 years ago, and flooded it to provide water for the city via an aquaduct. No water shortage there.

It's called city planning, and it's what used to happen in the UK.

I'm surprised people haven't been offered smart water meters so they can know their instant water usage and therefore save water Hmm. Perhaps we need to campaign for them ?

AltheaorDonna · 29/06/2018 10:31

I really don’t get this. I live in Australia where it doesn’t rain for months on end in summer, yet we can run sprinklers and fill our pools. Just how on earth can the UK have a water shortage when it rains all the time?

soulrider · 29/06/2018 10:38

There is no shortage of water. But demand is exceeding supply. This happens when rate of supply is built around the fact that most people don't normally run sprinklers because it rains all the time!

pumpkinpie01 · 29/06/2018 10:38

We had no water upstairs Wednesday and just a trickle out of the downstairs taps, our local authority put out a statement saying they had water but couldnt treat it quick enough and could we please not wash cars or use a hosepipe, we all managed and dh had a 'shower' from a bucket of water that I had painfully extracted from the downstairs taps
