Have posted on chat but have had no response so thought I would ask here! My 7 and 10 yr old are starving after school and I have decided to their tea as soon as we get home from school/work at 4pm and I will eat later with OH. Wondered if anyone could inspire me with their go to quick, simple tea ideas for kids? Thank you!!

Stir fry if you have veggies in (fresh ones) grate them or cut them fine, into a wok or frying pan with a sauce, (soy) ginger garlic, and if they want meat some finely sliced meat, takes about ten minutes

A slow cooker is your friend!
Jacket potatoes, soups, rice dishes all come out great.
If we're in a hurry I do baked beans on toast on the hob though.

When you cook for you and DH do enough for the children and keep it for the next day.

Frozen Yorkshire puddings with beans and pre-grated cheese is our swiftest dinner!

Tortillas with chicken nuggets, sweetcorn/salad and cheese.

Tuna and sweetcorn pasta.

Broccoli, chicken, creme fraiche pasta.

Wraps, covered in grated cheese and grilled for a few moments until melty (but the wrap hasn't gone crispy), then fill with sliced peppers and cucumbers.

Pasta with a tin of salmon or tuna, finely diced celery and peppers, sweetcorn, peas, and mayonnaise stored though.

I couldn't be arsed with two lots of cooking, why not just give them a banana to keep them going and all eat together later? I do this with my lot who are 11, 3 and 1

If you’ve got time at the weekend you could batch cook things like Bolognese sauce, curry, chicken stew and freeze them in portions.

Quiche and salad/chips.
Omelettes.
Beans/cheese/scrambled egg on toast.
Boiled eggs.
Gammon steak.
Baked salmon.

Chicken and cheese salad wraps.

FairySpringer · 28/06/2018 18:41

Mine usually have something smallish (bagel, crackers, fruit) when they come in and proper meal around 5/6

User467 · 28/06/2018 18:41

Boats - soft stand and stuff tortillas with chilli/bolognese that I have in the freezer. You could then use the remainder for your dinner

Tuna pasta

Quesadillas - wraps sandwiched with whatever and dry fried

French toast

Fake Nando's - chicken (roast or one of the hot ones from the supermarket) with fries and corn and then use the leftovers for your own

Pleasegodgotosleep · 28/06/2018 18:43

Cook some pasta, stir in spoonful of cream cheese, instant macaroni! Add any veggies, protein etc you have to hand.
Beans on toast.
Fill wraps with cheese veggies etc frying pan for 3 mins each side for quesadillas.

To avoid cooking two meals a night, I would cook a big thing and everyone eats that for 2-3 days.

Suggestions:

big lasagne, chili con carne, moussaka, stew, curry, veggie curry, slow roasted pork shoulder, pasta bake, mac 'n' cauli cheese, cassoulet

Switch up the sides from night to night in order to prevent whining, for example serve the above (as appropriate) with one or more of: salad, flatbread, garlic bread, steamed vegetables, baked potato, potato salad, wedges, mash, chips, sweet potato, sauces etc.

So, for example:
Day 1. Chili with rice, salad and refried beans
Day 2. Chili over sweet potato chips with salad, avocado and salsa
Day 3. Chili with rice and beans in tortilla wrap

What time does your 10 year old go to bed OP? If they eat at 4 they'll probably need supper or be starving in the morning.

We ate at 4 when I was a kid (Dad worked shifts) and we always had supper, something on toast or an omelette or sandwich.

Busybusybust · 28/06/2018 19:07

I know I’m old, but what’s wrong with a couple of biccies and a piece of fruit until supper is ready?
