Lost family dog

I can't tell if I'm being unreasonable or not.

My mum has a dog. A very clever dog who likes BBQs. It is 31 degrees. Said dog has been staying at mines for four days and I was meant to have her until tomorrow but my little sibling took her today (sibling is 16, I tried to stop them). Was then told that the dog is 'not my dog' and I am 'selfish' for looking after her- hmmmm, ok. Please note that my mother actually told my 16 year old sibling to take her because my 16 year old sibling deserves the responsibility and should learn to take care of pets.

Anyway. Gave dog back at 3PM and I shit you not, my sibling has already bloody lost her. Dog bolts if she's off a lead and smells something interesting. My family seem to think she is capable of being an off the lead dog and so goes missing about twice a month. Someone posted on a community FB group that they've seen her about 0.5m away from me. Apparently it's suddenly my responsibility to go and get her! My mum is on a train back to Scotland and is probably in England right now.

So, aibu to not go and get her straight away? I will in ten mins if they can't find her. But I'm not saying 'how high' when they say 'jump!' because I am so so sick of the dog not being looked after properly unless she's with me.

I'd go and get her, I'd worry about her being hit by a car or something.

Can see why you're annoyed though.

FlibbertyGiblets · 28/06/2018 18:32

Go get pooch now.
In future, no doggie sitting duties undertaken by you despite your reservations you'll have to harden your heart and say no.

Have a think about why you acceded to a request from your mother that was not in doggies best interests. She has a hold over you, even on holiday. Tricky.

YANBU to be annoyed but YWBVU to not get the dog - she could be hurt or even killed, or she could cause terrible havoc to someone else. Or she could run further off and get properly lost. It's the dog you would be punishing, not your family.

That said, once you have her back you would be totally entitled to refuse to help look after her anymore, given that your family are such a pain about it.

keyboardjellyfish · 28/06/2018 18:36

I wouldn't have let my sibling take her but she has keys :(

Anyway she's not been found yet and it's been ten minutes so going to have a look for her now- and then not give her back until a responsible adult with a lead comes to get her!

Go get the dog!

crispysausagerolls · 28/06/2018 18:38

Get the dog and then tell your family to fuck off next time they expect a dog sitter! And also how fucking irresponsible are they as dog owners 😡😡😡😡

Ohmydayslove · 28/06/2018 18:39

Get the dog and tear your sibling a new one. Tell your mother no more looking after unless she sorts out her young dd.

DeputyBrennan · 28/06/2018 18:40

Of course you have to go and get the dog, immediately. It sucks that your family are so irresponsible with her, but it's not her fault.

Go get the dog. Bring it home and let the wankers sweat for an hour. Then tell them you have just found it. It might give them a wake up call.

I saw a Jackrussel on a busy road, just get missed by a car. I caught it and went into the garage nearby. The staff told me it lived in the next road and was regularly running the roads. The owners, apparently, said he was fine and always came home. I went back to the car, rubbed some muck over the dog, took it to their house and told them it had been brushed by a car. Advised them to get it checked out and they were phoning the vet as I left. I don’t feel one bit guilty about worrying them, as it was only a matter of time before the wee pet was killed, then the poor driver would have to live with the guilt. Apparently they secured the garden after that and the dog wasn’t let run the roads. 😉

She's back! I was looking for five minutes and she had made her way back to my area and was obviously wanting to be with me. She's not going anywhere until I see an adult looking after her.
