To call 101?

It's 32 degrees according to my car, just come out of a swimming lesson and there's 2 kids and a jack Russell alone in a car next to me. The windows are open 4 inches or so, I'd say the kids are maybe 9 and 11. They seem quite happy but at least 10 minutes have passed. Is this not really fucking dangerous?

I suppose I could go back into the leisure centre but I don't really wanna leave the car!

I would call. It's too hot for anyone to be locked in a car, the temperature can get dangerous very quickly.

SoddingUnicorns · 28/06/2018 17:57

Go into the centre and ask them to put a call out for the parents. If they’re not out within 5 minutes break a window and call 101.

GunpowderGelatine · 28/06/2018 17:58

I've rang the leisure centre from my car! They're gonna track down the parent. I've asked the kids if they're ok, they looked at me like I had 3 heads 🤣

SasBel · 28/06/2018 18:00

That is awful! Hope they come back soon.

SoddingUnicorns · 28/06/2018 18:00

Great idea OP, I hadn’t thought of that! Hopefully they’re out soon. It’s insanity to leave children/animals in a car in the heat, especially this kind of heat!!! It’s potentially life threatening.

SoddingUnicorns · 28/06/2018 18:01

Is the door locked? (Sorry if you’ve already thought of that) could you open it? Or get them to from the inside?

WorraLiberty · 28/06/2018 18:01

I wouldn't assume they were locked in though?

SoddingUnicorns · 28/06/2018 18:04

From what you’ve said OP it’s approaching 20 minutes, along with however long they were there before you came along. Awful.

Lindy2 · 28/06/2018 18:04

At 9 and 11 surely they are able to simply open the car doors themselves if they are too hot.
If the dog was alone or the children very young then yes it's a big problem and you'd need to call the police. These are older children though.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 28/06/2018 18:05

Was there air conditioning in the car?

My teenager was actually sat in the (open) boot of our car last summer when she heard two women approaching discussing which of them would call the police because the dog was left on a hot day. As it was they were both liberally supplied with water and were cooler in the car at that point than the people discussing the police.

I'm not denying that it is very dangerous for children and animals but I would have thought an 11 yr old would be able to open the windows/doors/call for help. I would also have thought an 11 yr old would be articulate enough to say that they were all ok instead of just giving you a look as well!

Starlight345 · 28/06/2018 18:07

Yes if my 11 year was hot he would open the door or windows .

SoddingUnicorns · 28/06/2018 18:09

Mine wouldn’t, he’s autistic and wouldn’t know to. But then I wouldn’t leave him in a hot car.

ProfessorMoody · 28/06/2018 18:10

Is the air con on? I'd rather sit in my car in this weather, it's bliss.

alwaysontimeneverlate · 28/06/2018 18:11

@SoddingUnicorns same here, ds has no link to being too hot or cold and adding or removing clothing, opening windows etc.

ReadingRiot · 28/06/2018 18:14

I can't believe a 9&11 yo would stay in a boiling hot car. Surely the air con must be on and they're staying there because it's cool. You could try asking them

SoddingUnicorns · 28/06/2018 18:15

@alwaysontimeneverlate no, mine either. It’s 34 degrees in our (Scottish) garden today and I had to persuade him that a tshirt and shorts was better than a tracksuit!

It’s also been a real struggle to get enough fluid into him today.

So age/looks of age isn’t always an indicator.

GunpowderGelatine · 28/06/2018 18:16

I'm home now but I waited 5 more minutes and I was about to check the doors but a furious looking woman cane out the leisure centre, and I heard her say "You'll have to watch Mason doing karate now, some people have completely over reacted" with lots of moaning from the kids. She left the dog in though!!

I hate to be a busybody but I called the leisure centre back and told them the dog was still left in. I think they hate me Blush I didn't stick around to see if she came back but I hope the dog is ok!

GunpowderGelatine · 28/06/2018 18:17

Reading I asked them if they were ok, they just said "yeah" and looked at me like I was mad. I think I've spoiled their fun!

SoddingUnicorns · 28/06/2018 18:19

Gunpowder at least you gave a shit! More than some would have.

50shadesofgreyismylaundry · 28/06/2018 18:19

You are mad. Those kids weren't babies or dogs, they were old enough to look after themselves.

SoddingUnicorns · 28/06/2018 18:19

There was a dog which is still there!!!!

TheHulksPurplePanties · 28/06/2018 18:20

YABVU, they were 9 & 11, not toddlers strapped in a seat. They could get out if they wanted.

Plump82 · 28/06/2018 22:43

Im worried that the situation is now worse for that poor dog.

Ceebs85 · 28/06/2018 22:50

Windows were open and they were old enough to open them further or step out of the car if too hot?
