Is my boss a C.F.?

I work in an educational setting. Officially, I start work at 9am as this is when the students arrive. Actually, I usually get to work at about 8.15, as this gives me time to do my photocopying, set up the room etc (and beat the rush of other people trying to do the same). My boss usually gets to work about 15 mins before me, although he doesn't 'officially' start until 8.30.

Recently however he has taken to locking the front door of the building after him when he arrives and ignoring the buzzer and knocks. I have to sit outside until he deigns to let me in. Sometimes he is working, but sometimes he just seems to be sitting on the sofa listening to music. When I asked him why, if he is there, he can't just let me in too, he just says that he's busy and needs some peace and quiet, and/or I'm not supposed to be there til 8.30 anyway. I don't get this: a) I'm just doing my own thing in the morning and rarely bother him at all (although the photocopier is in his room which I suppose might be distracting); b) surely if I want to start work early and not be paid for it that's my own business? c) if he is starting early I don't see why I can't too??

Can anyone else see his point, because I am baffled?

He's not a CF, he's an arsehole. Just start showing up at 8.30.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 28/06/2018 08:03

Kind of. I love the early morning quiet before everyone else arrives.

I'd just start at 9.

Shumpalumpa · 28/06/2018 08:04

Agree that he is an arsehole.

Is it his company?

Shumpalumpa · 28/06/2018 08:06

I'd just start at 9

What, and keepmstudhts waiting while OP does photocopying and sets ypnroom. You must have a great work ethic.

OP, could photpcopier be moved to another room or could you do it the night before?

ImogenTubbs · 28/06/2018 08:15

I obviously don't know your boss but could it be a tactless way of trying to discourage you from starting work so early? Saying you're working too hard? (Clutching at straws)

it’s probably something he’s doing before you arrive he doesn’t want you in on

FinallyHere · 28/06/2018 08:32

What does he say when you explain that the prep is required before classes start? If the door is locked overnight, could you do the prep the night before?

He might just want some quiet time, or....

I usually get to work early, its always been well received. This reaction is very puzzling.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 28/06/2018 08:57

@Shumpalumpa I have an excellent work ethic thank you, as does the OP. But her BOSS is telling her not to show up so early.

I'm guessing OP is a TA and her boss is a teacher?

TellsEveryoneRealFacts · 28/06/2018 09:01

I don't want to bring this down but we had a boss once that would come in early and have a 'quiet moment' with himself [wank] - it was vile and if we'd had micro cameras back then we would have got the weirdo sacked for it. As it was it was just our word against his...and the company always sided with management no matter what.

It was around the time of Tiger Woods and his last name resembled Woods so he earned the nickname Tugger Woods. Fucking arsehole.

Maelstrop · 28/06/2018 09:09

He's being an arsehole. Start turning up at 8.30 or demand a key.

Mammyloveswine · 28/06/2018 09:10

Tugger woods Grin

PorkFlute · 28/06/2018 09:31

Can you do your prep the evening before. Maybe boss has a stressful home life and comes in early for some downtime?
If you are struggling to prepare though then you need to raise it and see what solution you can come up with.

Inbedbyeight · 28/06/2018 09:35

I would take that as a massive hint that he doesn't want you coming in that early. Very rude way to go about it though, he should just say to you!

WhatchaMaCalllit · 28/06/2018 10:46

Ask him - Do you have an issue with me arriving at 8:15 and doing the preparation work for the day ahead at this time? If he says he does, then there is your answer.
He sounds a bit odd to be stopping you from doing work in your own time that is to the betterment of the students.
Very strange.

frasier · 28/06/2018 10:51

Very odd. Perhaps he’s doing something in the office that he shouldn’t be doing or doesn’t want anyone to know he’s doing?
