AIBU to brush my teeth in the car park?

TheMagnificentEthel · 28/06/2018 07:17

I drive about one hour to work every day. I have breakfast in my car. Our car park is basically a field.

AIBU to brush my teeth in the car park?
The toilets at work are grim.

I sit and brush in my car then rinse my mouth with a bottle of water, open the door and spit on the grass.

AIBU?

Yes that’s disgusting, imagine if everyone did that everyday. Use the toilets at work.. if you only need them to spit out in I don’t see the problem..

HunterHearstHelmsley · 28/06/2018 07:24

YABU. And disgusting.

MissionItsPossible · 28/06/2018 07:26

Don’t spit on the grass. That’s disgusting.

Fairylea · 28/06/2018 07:29

If it’s literally a field then I can’t see the issue, although generally I do think spitting in public is absolutely disgusting. But a field is just a bit of grass isn’t it, the spit is going to sink into the floor, it’s biodegradable isn’t it - if no one is going to step on it (!) crack on.

Personally I’d just brush my teeth either when I got to work in the sink or before I left home.

BlueBug45 · 28/06/2018 07:29

I was actually brought up to brush my teeth first thing in the morning simply because if you don't eat at all in the morning or have breakfast until much later then you still have brushed teeth.

Btw you know cars are a breeding ground for bacteria. I hope you clean the inside of your car weekly if you eat in it regulary.

emmyrose2000 · 28/06/2018 07:31

YABU
Disgusting.

IdLikeABiscuitPlease · 28/06/2018 07:36

Can't see the issue myself:

Looneytune253 · 28/06/2018 07:41

Surely eating in the car isn’t safe and/or healthy either. Eat at home and then brush teeth before you go. Simple

Pecano · 28/06/2018 07:42

Can’t you just brush your teeth first thing, then have breakfast? Do you brush your teeth after your lunch too?

If you really need to, you can get those little chewable toothbrush things you often see for sale in toilets, where you chomp on the bobbly plastic thing for a minute or two then chuck it in the bin. No rinsing and spitting required.

Hoopspoops · 28/06/2018 07:42

My dentist recommends that you leave at least an hour after eating before brushing. The acid in the food and your saliva (of which there is much more because you’ve eaten) softens the enamel, which is therefore more susceptible to erosion from the brush. Also you shouldn’t rinse.

Brush your teeth before you leave the house.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 28/06/2018 07:42

You should be brushing your teeth before breakfast. It's not recommended to do it after eating.

So that eliminates the dilemma.

I brush first thing but also after eating.
Can you post me a link to the chewable thing. I don’t know what they are.

TheMagnificentEthel Nothing unreasonable about it. I understand full well wanting to brush your teeth after a meal so that the taste won't linger in your mouth for hours.

Don't understand the display of low digust thresholds here but maybe I don't know how to genteel. Spitting into a field? A badly-maintained loo can be disgusting and seeing to one's hygiene in it certainly would be. Entering your building and spitting onto the reception desk could fairly be called disgusting. Throwing litter onto the field would be disgusting. What you're doing is in its context innocuous and I hope you've not been made self-conscious about something that's almost certainly going unnoticed.

But why are you eating in the car? I'd be tempted to get up a few minutes earlier to pack a blanket and a basket and have my breakfast sitting in the field.

pigsDOfly · 28/06/2018 09:25

Can someone please explain why the OP spitting a bit of water into a field is disgusting? I'm incredibly anti spitting but really don't understand why this is a problem.

Those little brush things don't work.

GinDaddy · 28/06/2018 09:28

Can folk on here help answer something for me:

If it takes the same amount of time to eat breakfast sitting in the car, as sitting at the table at home, why not just do the latter and eat at home then set off?!

I know traffic might be a factor but ten mins later?

YABU

longwayoff · 28/06/2018 09:31

Frankly, who cares? Do as you wish. But not near me thanks.

kaytee87 · 28/06/2018 09:33

Pretty disgusting.

You shouldn't actually brush your teeth within half an hour of eating, it's bad for them.

MaryPeary · 28/06/2018 09:35

No, YANBU. Nothing wrong with it at all - the grass will benefit from the rinse as it may clear some dogs' piss off it! We're in the UK - it rains. Grass grows on dirt, where animals piss and shit and die and other organisms happily live off all that stuff. Your spit is not going to make any difference.

No need to clean teeth after a meal if you cleaned them before, though. You can cause erosion of gums & enamel by excessive brushing.

I expect you have breakfast in the car so you have a time buffer factored in, in case of delays getting to work?

Really I am Hmm at some of these hygiene freaks having palpitations over eating in the car and spitting on the grass. One wonders how they will survive come the apocalypse....

PereyButton · 28/06/2018 09:40

Nothing wrong with this. Just spit it in to a bush and not on a walk way. Job done. Wouldn't bother me in the slightest! Don't know why it's such a big issue Confused

Best to wait a while after eating though.

CherryNib · 28/06/2018 09:41

Yes, the chewable brushes are rubbish!

Some very strange opinions here...!

generally I do think spitting in public is absolutely disgusting

So brushing your teeth in a public sink is also disgusting? But having dirty teeth isn't?

Surely eating in the car isn’t safe and/or healthy either.

LOL!

rosesgarden · 28/06/2018 09:45

Is it hell disgusting. I'm amazed at people who think it is. What if a dog poos in a field. The residue left even after cleaning up would be worse. We have rain don't we?

TigerDroveAgain · 28/06/2018 09:48

Hahaha. I knew that this would bring out the ewww-ers. None of you ever been camping? I can think of many more disgusting things than a bit of toothpaste and saliva.

MrsJoker · 28/06/2018 09:49

To echo other posters - brush first thing, before eating. Also, don’t rinse with water - just spit.
I would advise against spitting toothpaste on the grass because some of the ingredients be toxic to wildlife/domestic animals (xylitol which is in some toothpastes is extremely harmful to dogs, for instance. Why not keep a spare plastic bottle in the car and spit the toothpaste residue into this instead, if you have no alternative other than to brush in the car?

chipsandgin · 28/06/2018 09:49

Just don't use water - my dentist recommends not swilling and spitting after anyway. If you brush your teeth with a minimal amount of paste (presuming it is the second time so they have already had a good clean at home earlier) then you eliminate the spitting part, which appears to be the main concern here. Although I really can't see the problem if it is a field! we keep toothbrushes in the car for 'just in case' brushing so dont think it's weird at all!

CherryNib · 28/06/2018 09:52

Eeek! Mrs Joker I didn't think about the Xylitol thing—in that case OP definitely don't spit toothpaste in a field where animals might encounter it. And apparently fluouride is also toxic to dogs!
