Gumtree Nightmare

Hi, am new to this amazing site. Sincere apologies I am child-free yet more than old enough to have some. Really hopeful no one is at all offended that I am not a mom, just find that you are all full of massive
human wisdom and insight.

My problem: I am really upset and fed-up with Gumtree as a seller- platform, no better than eBay/local ad etc. I very rarely sell anything -
never quite have a mass of saleable goods. Just put an advert up on Gumtree (few days ago) to sell a HUSKY fridge (Budweiser) that is 5 years old and only used sparingly at Christmases to refrigerate cold cans. Cost £130 to buy 5 years ago so selling at just £30. Have had so many potential buyers request that I sell it for £20 instead - I am sort of okay with £25 yet once I state this, they simply don't reply!.

Am really clever with positive-selling words - focusing on positives whilst always telling truth about genuine condition - would never sell anything I wouldn't be happy to buy myself.

Am I being paranoid or is it just myself experiencing this?. I agree money is very tight for many of us, yet I can barely afford to pay utility bills, no car and no holidays - not for 20 years and I am 45 years old.

People like a bargain - it's less about the price and more about getting a deal, put it on for £40 and you'll probably get £30

I’ve had nightmares as both a buyer and seller. You’re at the mercy of how much someone really wants what you’re selling. I have a few rules:

Never buy or sell anything electrical
Research the item I’m buying
Don’t rip people off
Only sell things that are in good condition

It's not you, a lot of people on Gumtree like to waste time and jerk people around. Even if you did agree to £20 they still might go silent. I've had people say they definitely want to come get something I've listed for free and then never respond again.

Welcome!

List it for £40, people always like a bargain.

Also the site seems to be full of lonely time wasters, the type who send stupid questions which are already covered in the ad or ask if it's still available then not reply again when told it is.

It's full of weirdos but plenty genuine buyers too.

Gumtree looks like a cross between a jumble sale and a car boot sale to me and it is owned by Ebay anyway so you may as well use Ebay.

I agree, put it on for more than you want for it.

SussexBonfireViking · 27/06/2018 19:51

Gumtree is free, which more than you can say for eBay

I've just listed my motorbike for sale had it up for 550 which is what i want, keep being offered under that, so deleted and re uploaded for 650

Thankyou massively for your insightful advice. I was wanting to sell it for £40 originally yet sort of got low-self worth moment and thought £30 was more realistic due to age of it, despite fab working order and really beautiful statement piece. £30 is a really great bargain price if on a low income, yet perhaps not for anyone on desperately very low incomes like myself. Should now maybe up the price to £40?.

Have given so many free things on Freecycle - things I could afford to buy once and in really new condition, not just useful fair condition - parents always my main priority - have a big-heart when it comes to giving and always find spare-change to feed the birds in my shared-housing garden and local refuse collector, I buy water and sometimes cakes from bakery.
