Sports days in the heat being cancelled

Kind of wish ours was. It's meant to be really hot this week and it will be at 1.30pm. Poor kids.

We had our sports day the other day and it was 24 degrees. Full sun, no shade, no wind, parent and kids out for 3 hours. Water was constantly being refilled and there were a fair few cases of sunburn and very ratty younger siblings.

Would not want to be doing that today - 30 degrees where I am! Lovely but you want to be able to go inside if you need to.

slithytove · 26/06/2018 15:01

Oh and we had 7 events

crunchymint · 26/06/2018 15:01

I used to work with kids. They would be running around full pelt in very hot days while all the staff were sweltering. Just need sensible precautions.

crunchymint · 26/06/2018 15:02

16 mile full hike with full army backpacks that weigh a ton being compared to a quick dash on the sports field. FFS

Laiste · 26/06/2018 15:04

Sunburn was pretty much looked upon as being just part of summer when i was a kid. (70s)

We're all fully aware now of how important it is not to burn, and to stay hydrated. If these needs are not being met in certain situations (pps have mentioned no shade, sun screen applied too long ago, lack of provision for water) why shouldn't we be concerned? There's nothing noble or character building about heat stroke and sunburn.

MiddleAgedMe · 26/06/2018 15:04

They're all sitting around in the heat though aren't they? Getting hot before they even start their races. It's too hot here to be running around. I've brought my LO in until it cools a bit

TheFirstMrsOsmond · 26/06/2018 15:04

If they postpone there will no doubt be some parents who complain they can't make the rescheduled date.... I can understand why they would choose to continue with plenty of water/sunscreen/hats etc

Theresahairbrushinthefridge · 26/06/2018 15:05

Our school cancels at over 25 degrees on the advice of the Athletics association.

RafikiIsTheBest · 26/06/2018 15:05

Most children will be fine, but not all.
I for one really struggle with the heat, no matter what suncream I wear, how much I drink or use of hat etc if I get too hot for too long or in the sun too much I get ill. Struggle a lot on holidays abroad, I can't stay in the pool for long as my head overheats and I still get ill. Maybe I need to take up scuba diving holidays! haha
I was always ill after hot days at school, my teachers often thought I was skiving to enjoy the warm weather but I was always laid on the bed or sofa, with a fan, a cold cloth and sipping water (trying to keep it down). I would beg at school to be allowed to stay inside and try to stand as close to the school building as possible to keep in the shade when I was made to stay outside.

Laiste · 26/06/2018 15:07

It's not a quick dash though.

As posters are saying - it's a school full of kids on a field in full sun for 3 or 4 hours around mid-day. Often no shade. Sometimes without a recent application of sun cream. Sometimes without enough attention to hydration. The dashing, slow or quick, isn't the main problem!

Are you seriously comparing school sports day with SAS selection?

Some parents on here need to get a grip. As long as the kids aren't in direct sunlight for hours on end they will be fine.

Talk about mollycoddled...

In the words of Peter Kay, have a Solero and shut the f**k up!

dementedma · 26/06/2018 15:08

can't make slides in the snow
can't throw snowballs
Can't play conkers
...and now can't run about in the sun!

What next?

Laiste · 26/06/2018 15:10

As long as the kids aren't in direct sunlight for hours on end they will be fine.

But they often are. And it's what some parents are objecting to.

Aragog · 26/06/2018 15:11

but even so, would you want to run around in this heat

Try telling that to our infant school children! They are still spending every playtime and lunchtime testing around. They come in hot and sticky and sweaty - in a hot classroom of thirty y2s the afternoons are somewhat fragrant at the moment!!

eurochick · 26/06/2018 15:13

We had ours this morning (11-12). The infants were kept in the shade between races. The children all had hats and water. The parents were in the sun but it was fine. It's just a bit of sun.

picklemepopcorn · 26/06/2018 15:13

My kids were always off the day after a sunny sports day. No amount of water and sun cream was enough to stop them throwing up all night. They'd come home limp and grumpy, and need sponging down. Adults are better able to regulate their temperature, and to spot when they are getting into trouble, than children are.

PatriarchyPersonified · 26/06/2018 15:16

but they often are

Even when I was at school laiste, children sat in the shade during hot weather and that was a long time ago...

There is a difference between sensible precautions and mollycoddling.

If a school genuinely has a playing field without a single bit of shade on it, and they refuse to take any other precautions whatsoever (hats, water, suncream etc) then you might have a point, but I'd be very surprised if any schools these days would do that.

The knee jerk 'my little one can't do sports day in this heat' reactions from some on here are cringe worthy and laughable in equal measure.

How do kids in hot countries cope FFS?

We are creating a generation of people who have never faced even mild discomfort in their entire lives.

People need to get a grip.

jasjas1973 · 26/06/2018 15:16

I thought this was one school over reacting... its no wonder we ve a nation of fat kids and fatter parents.

PrivateDoor · 26/06/2018 15:21

No they shouldn't cancel. However if you are very concerned then just keep your dc off. It shouldn't be spoiled for everyone else.

Seniorcitizen1 · 26/06/2018 15:22

I do fear for the future of this country if our young people of today are wrapped up in cotyon wool as many of these posts and posts on similar threads suggest is happening.

SilverySurfer · 26/06/2018 15:23

Heratnumber7
If we ever have another war, I hope it's not during a sunny spell!!

So true, let's hope it's not the day for an anxiety attack either. No, I'm sure we'll be fine.

On second thoughts, no we won't, we'll be fucked if there's another war.

wanderings · 26/06/2018 15:24

We are creating a generation of people who have never faced even mild discomfort in their entire lives.
This in spades. Once upon a time, people just got on with it. I'm very much in the camp "No bad weather - only bad clothing", in summer and winter.

And also a generation of people who just can't enjoy and appreciate whatever the weather does. It snows. It rains. The wind blows. The thunder claps. The fog descends. And just occasionally, fleetingly, briefly, the sun shines, and so many people moan, and say "it's too hot for this, it's too hot for that".

CadyHeron · 26/06/2018 15:25

Hat, sun block and plenty of water. They'll be reet. Don't be so wet.

suzy2b · 26/06/2018 15:25

At our school they don't actually do races just silly things in groups

unintentionalthreadkiller · 26/06/2018 15:25

Ours is on Friday - we've had an email requesting gazebos to provide some shade. 9-3.
