Shout at my neighbour at 7.30 this morning

Our neighbour whose home is side on to our back garden advised us last week that they want to demolish the garage that makes up a part of the boundary and really place replace a fence.

I went and chatted to them it seemed all friendly and reasonable and I asked that they let us know when they were going to do it as we have dogs that might escape , patio furniture next to the wall they are demolishing and we have French door stop in our bedroom and kitchen with no curtains and so for privacy reasons want notice.

It was all agreed very friendly they would keeps us in the loop.

Fast forward to 7.30 this morning we had overslept and I’m woken by banging I look up and there’s two men on the garage roof looking straight into our bedroom while myself and DP are laying in bed.

So my question was AIBU when I got out in the garden in my PJS and ask what exactly they think they are doing? Because according to the neighbour there’s is no problem and I’m being unreasonable

You need to wear protective clothing with asbestos and should be removed by a specialist, call the council now!!!!!!

Tara336 · 26/06/2018 12:49

@WingsOnMyBoots thanks I feel your pain! I had come back from my chat last week and told DP how nice the neighbours were and how reasonable etc then this happens. One of the other posters said I gave them and inch they took a mile and I think they are right. It’s massively inconvenient as we have just spent a fortune doing our garden and now everything has to be moved about including some decking but I didn’t want to make a fuss and was trying to be a nice neighbour! Wish I hadn’t bothered now

Gillybeanz is right you need to make sure everything is in order with this and check about possible planning permission.

Also anywhere I've ever lived work of this type has not been allowed to start before 8am. I'd be checking that out too.

Tara336 · 26/06/2018 12:51

@gillybeanz I have done. I did an asbestos awareness course as part of my job which was why I raised the subject with them

i havent read all the thread but how inconsiderate they are.
unfortunately most people are like that and gave up long time ago to believe what they said and they'll be sensitive to others.
i bet they were enjoying the view thats why they didnt inform you at 7:30. how horrible.

QuinquiremeOfNineveh · 26/06/2018 13:04

People attach all sorts of things to their fence

The significant words there being 'their fence'. You can attach what you like to your own fence. You shouldn't attach anything to your neighbours' fence without their permission.

In this case, the neighbours were BU not to give warning that they were starting work.

WingsOnMyBoots · 26/06/2018 13:07

Yep this is the same as us. I think fence/boundary issues show people's true colours!! Boundaries are a very British bone of contention! lo!!

There was such a difference between what we agreed and what actually happened (won't go into the full story) that we did wonder if the conversation had actually taken place or we'd dreamed it up.

The thing with these situations is there's not a real lot you can do but I hope you can get your garden sorted out with as little pain and expense as possible :-)

DarlingNikita · 26/06/2018 13:14

That's out of order, especially considering you had a chat about it and – thought you – clarified the timescale etc.

For starters you can report noise nuisance to the council as generally 8am is the earliest start time acceptable.

The sparks flying onto your cushions is alarming too. Ask the council if they're interested in the H&S aspect of that.

Maybe go and talk to the neighbour again when they're not working on it, and remind them of your conversation and the reasons for it?

fruitbrewhaha it’s definitely on the boundary and a back corner of the garage is in my neighbours garden and forms part of her boundary too she had no idea it was happening at all, we had a note through the door as it’s mainly forming our boundary. I genuinely don’t mind it coming down as it’s ugly but it’s just the fact we had an agreement which they reneged on. As we were told it was weeks not days we were completely unprepared. I did go again this morning and try to explain why we are annoyed but I was met with shoulder shrugging and not much else

Be prepared OP, for this to just be the start of their cheeky fuckery.

Where's their skip going?
What time will they be starting each morning?
Will they be working Sundays?
Will they want access to your garden to erect their fence posts?
Are they going to pay for a window cleaner to clean all their dust off your french doors?
etc etc etc

Notquiteagandt · 26/06/2018 13:21

I would not mess around with asbestos. Its a silent killer. Can linger in the air for ages too. Id make sure to wash cushions etc from chairs if they where close by.

For this alone I would play hell. Irrisponsible at best a killer at worse!!

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 26/06/2018 13:22

On a lighthearted note, be glad you were wearing PJs. I bet many people sleep naked in this weather!Blush

Tara336 · 26/06/2018 13:55

@Eliza9917 I went round and spoke to them again this morning and I didn’t see a skip at all so not a clue how anything’s being disposed of. I wouldn’t expect them to need to come into our garden as they didn’t when they did the bit at end of my neighbours garden (they are side on too three properties so my left hand neighbour has their drive and new garage tt end of of her garden, we have house and old garage and neighbour to our right has their back garden at end of hers)

@PeterPiperPickedSeaShells luckily they were my new covers everything pjs rather than anything slinky and they were lucky DP didn’t go out in his pants

I noticed that the sheets were taken off the roof in one piece which again makes me think asbestos but he was cutting up there this morning what I think must be metal brackets of some sort as sparks were flying everywhere. Council are coming out to have a look but it is another reason we wanted all our possessions out of the way

I believe it's pretty standard for it to be illegal to do noisy building work outside the hours of 8am and 6pm. A phone call to the council would have been worth making.
