Months ago I suddenly started with eczema after never having had it before. Only on my fingers strangely.

A month ago I started with hayfever after never having that either.

I’ve been taking pirinase nasal spray, painkillers and a throat spray with anaesthetic.

Yet I still feel terrible.

My hands are so so itchy and painful. My sinuses hurt and I have a constant nasal drip. My throat feels like I have swolled a cactus. I can’t stop sneezing and my nose keeps running. Plus I feel headachy.

Am I missing something? Also tried over the counter hayfever tablets but again they haven’t had much effect.

Doesn’t help that work have air con which seems to be circulating the air and giving me a further dry throat.

I feel miserable this morning. Any advice will be massively helpful right now.

Gp for prescription antihistamine, otc stuff isn't strong enough for proper hayfever

AJPTaylor · 26/06/2018 06:16

life long hay fever sufferer here.
i take tablets every 4 hours, use eyedrops and beconase spray. the important thing i think is to keep taking them. cos once it takes a hold its miserable.
are you sure the throat is hayfever?

BoldComicSans · 26/06/2018 06:22

I think the sore throat is caused by the constant nasal drip if I’m honest.
The over the counter medication states to only use once per day. The spray I’m using every 3 hours as recommended.

Is the air con new or have you moved offices? Did it start then ? You could
ask work if they can clean out filters as our work air con is terrible for that. It gets a yearly clean but about 4 of us in team together ask at least once in addition mid year for filter clean cos were puffy eyed and streaming at work. I haven't been able to smell anything for years since we moved to
this air con building due to constant blocked nasal passages which gets better when on AL.

However pollen is high at moment and has already been a bad year for hayfever sufferers (me!) and even those who rarely suffer unless a bumper year (like my son). Even with all the meds.

My tips are, never have windows open in the night (use fans instead) and only short periods in day, not on high pollen days either. No flowers inside, shoes off at door, coats away. Don't think that rain clears it, as raindrops can disturb pollen or tree stuff initially. And regularly take the non drowsy anti histamines & a nasal spray.

There’s a cream called eurax that’s fantastic for itching and can buy from supermarkets

Bowerbird5 · 26/06/2018 06:39

Ask GP for Dermovate cream. It cleared up eczema on my feet and hands really quickly. I put it on as I get into bed so it soaks in while I sleep.

I wake up with grungy eyes. Sneeze every now and then about twenty times and feel tired easily. I can't take the tablets as they make me very drowsy.

strawberrisc · 26/06/2018 06:42

I was told that nasal spray would stop taking effect after you’d used it a certain number of times.

Passmeabrew · 26/06/2018 06:42

I take otc cetirizine twice a day when I am really suffering. It does advise one a day but I take this medication regularly so know it doesn't make me drowsy, never do it if I will be drinking and have been advised in the past when had quite a bad allergic reaction to something that it was ok to do so have carried on as needed.

I also suffer ezcema and have had it on my hands on and off and its awful. I recommend Aveeno or Lush's Cream Cream. Not the cheapest options but have never failed me. Apply liberally and often. Try to avoid antibacterial hand wash as these irritate mine so might help? I also avoid the antibacterial gels as these are awful for my skin.

Welcome to my world, it is torture.

I get fexofenadine (antihistamine) prescribed and it does really help.

I will say this year has been particularly bad for hayfever, ever since March I have woken up every day with eyes like pin pricks. I also get eczema all over my face just to add to the discomfort. You can buy hydrocortisone OTC to help with eczema but only use it occasionally
