Trying to hide an infectious condition is probably a criminal offence! What if there was a pregnant lady on the plane - or someone with a compromised immune system?

elsieanjoanne · 24/05/2007 14:17

chicken pox is contagious two weeks before the spots arrive

noddyholder · 24/05/2007 14:17

really irresponsible I caught it from a small child and spent 2 weeks in a thai hospital! The woman in question later admitted she had known she had it on the flight.V dangerous in immunosuppressed adults

Angeliz · 24/05/2007 14:17

Irresponsible cow!

misdee · 24/05/2007 14:18

they are also still contagious untill all the spots have crusted over. around 5 days.

No YABU because obviously it's every mum for herself these days and there's no such thing as society and the imunocompromised (and people who might like to not come out in chickenpox half way through their holiday) should just lump it.

Jeez!

misdee · 24/05/2007 14:18

lol shona.

no its 2 days beforehand , 10 days - 3 weeks to incubate (during which time you are not contagious). You can't hide all the spots anyway and an airline won't carry a potentially contaagious child. Silly, selfish cow .

madamez · 24/05/2007 14:26

We're talking chickenpox, not the Black Plague. If the family have to cancel their holiday they may forfeit money they can't afford to lose, and disappoint their children over something that is really pretty trivial. After all, should a seriously immunosurpressed individual be travelling on a plane where other people might have coughs, colds, diseases that are infectious but which haven't come out yet, etc?

Cappuccino · 24/05/2007 14:27

have to agree with madamez

who knows how many people are incubating chickenpox right next to you on the bus?

misdee · 24/05/2007 14:27

hmmm cost of a holiday (which if you have insurence i am almost certain chicken pox is covered) or risking someone elses lives?

well i had the same discussion with a friend this morning and she too was saying how she would hide it, she is a good enough friend that i could be honest on my feelings. I have a cousin who has had a liver transplant, chicken pox could seriously affect him, how can you say he should never go on a plane anywhere?

Iklboo · 24/05/2007 14:29

Coughs & colds don't generally tend to affect an unborn foetus the way chicken pox can.
Chicken pox is a Government 'approved' reportable contagious disease - like measles, mumps, rubella etc. It can cause widespread contagion much more serious than a cough or a cold

misdee · 24/05/2007 14:29

ah you see, we shoukld keep people with comproised immune systems locked up in a bubble. which has also been suggested to my face before.

quadrophenia · 24/05/2007 14:30

if there is a rule to say an infected child shouldn't fly then it should be respected.

compo · 24/05/2007 14:30

I wouldn't want to take a choicken pox'd child on holiday anyway - mine were miserable with it and nobody slept well while they had it

quadrophenia · 24/05/2007 14:31

those with compromised immunity put their faith in others that these rules are adhered to.

stealthsquiggle · 24/05/2007 14:35

She would have to hide it v. well for the airline not to spot it - they err on the side of caution, always.
DS got chickenpox while we were on holiday (well, it emerged then - he clearly caught it before we went). Almost all of the spots were scabbed over by the time we came back, but I was v. glad we had gone by car/ channel tunnel - didn't feel the slightest bit guilty about bringing him back, but we would never have got him onto a plane.

Chugnuts · 24/05/2007 14:36

Gosh! I thought everyone knew that losing money was far more important than risking the health and lives of other people.

If it wasn't a health risk the airlines wouldn't have these rules in the first place. YANBU.

misdee · 24/05/2007 14:36

quad, we are going to have to try and put our faith in society as well.

i know that dh wont be able to risk the school pick up and drops off during this season chicken pox, or will have to stand away from everyone.
