Cooking separate vegetarian dinners?

abitoflight · 25/06/2018 21:27

DD 19 back home for more than 3 months. Has a PT job about 16 hours a week
Tonight had roast dinner. Separate gravy, separate potatoes. Tomorrow she won't eat salmon so separate fish. Next day, a separate Bolognese. We are happy to eat vegetarian a night a week but AIBU that I'm already pissed off with this? With 3 months to go?
She says thank you and eats the meals but I'm not a bloody short order chef

Avocado and halloumi sound delicious. Add some tomatoes and she has a decent meal. Get her to prepare her own meals.

CherriesAndLemonade · 25/06/2018 22:09

If she's pescatarian (no meat but eats fish ) then you could do fish some nights? Also freezing batches of veggie meals. As for the gravy u can buy veggie granules-easy peesey! For 3 months I don't see what the fuss is all about really.

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 25/06/2018 22:09

My DD dad is vegetarian and I never had an issue with having the same meal - one veggie, one not.
For bolognese I will make the sauce from scratch (vegetarian) then seperate some into a different saucepan I I can add done add meat to majn saucepan and quorn the other saucepan.
Toad in the hole - easy to make seperate.
Sausage and mash - easy to make seperate.
Roast dinner - you don’t need meatball juices in gravy or potatoes and will probably do everyone health son health some good topped stopped.
Pasta bake - easy to make both
Jacket spuds - easy to do both
Mac and cheese - veggie anyway
Pizza - easy to do both

Literally...so easy. You just sound bitter and unaccepting of her choice

NailsNeedDoing · 25/06/2018 22:10

Fajitas are easy to do as a veggie/meat mix, that's one of the most convenient things to combine in our house.

When the non veggies in my house have bolognese, I as the veggie just have spaghetti with one of those stir in sauces from the shops, I couldn't be arsed cooking two types of bolognese.

Bisto gravy is vegan, and potatoes are just as nice roasted in oil. It sounds like you're creating work for yourself where you don't need to. Get your dd to do her own chopping of extra veg so you don't have to do everything.

fruitpastille · 25/06/2018 22:11

It's a compete pain op. My veggie is much younger and is also V fussy - doesn't like eggs, risotto, stuffed pasta, curry, I could go on.

I don't like quorn, 1 sibling hates mushrooms and another allergic to nuts.

I batch cook and freeze portions of veggie chilli and pasta sauce and have veggie sausages/nuggets to replace more meaty stuff. I don't mention stock cubes Blush

PurpleDaisies · 25/06/2018 22:13

I don't mention stock cubes
How difficult it it to use a vegetable stock cube?

Pimmsypimms · 25/06/2018 22:14

My dd is a vegetarian and the rest of the family are meat eaters. I batch cook for her and freeze it (spag Bol, chilli, curry etc) so that I don’t have to cook a separate meal every night, makes it so much less hassle.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 25/06/2018 22:14

My DS is vegetarian and I always made her separate meals. If it was bolognese I'd chop everything up, have one with vege mince and then another one in beef mince. I think once you get used to it it's really not that difficult and not that much of a faff.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 25/06/2018 22:16

Sorry DS is for dearest sister not dearest son

DuchyDuke · 25/06/2018 22:16

Most stock cubes and shop bought gravies are vegetarian. They just don’t say so cause the companies want you to think you’re buying the real deal - but look at the ingrediants!

Honestlyhelpful · 25/06/2018 22:17

I can’t imagine begrudging cooking for one of my dc.
I have a coeliac and diary free child and I’m vegetarian, everyone else eats meat. Dh, and I both take turns cook and sometimes dc cook, but we accommodate for the entire household. Sometimes there’s a compromise (all eat veggie or the vegetarian dish is very a boring extra dish) but we make it work.

corythatwas · 25/06/2018 22:17

It would be very, very easy to do a Bolognese where you just fried the meat separately and added it to the onions in one pan.

In fact, I agree with Sarah- all of this sounds so easy to do with minimum effort that it almost makes me wonder if you want to be a martyr.

This is what I would do:

dd cooks one meal a week for the entire family- this is non-negotiable

you cook one vegetarian and one fish meal for the whole family

for the remaining meals you do the ordinary food just excluding the meat rom her portions

AssassinatedBeauty · 25/06/2018 22:19

Most stock cubes do have meat in, certainly the main brands like Oxo and Knorr do. Bisto gravy granules are usually vegetarian although I think there are one or two varieties aren't.

LEDadjacent · 25/06/2018 22:20

My DD (16) cooks veggie food for all of us or I cook veggie food for all of us. If we want meat she has quorn something with a salad.

Racecardriver · 25/06/2018 22:22

Just leave her to it. Ask her to write a list of what she needs before you grocery shop and move on with your life. If she doesn't like what you have made she can cook food herself.

notacooldad · 25/06/2018 22:27

Can I suggest a cookbook or two that may help out?
I have the part time vegetarian and also virtually vegan which are both great books that offer a veggie ( or vegan ) menu which with a little adaptation are suitable for meat eaters as well so the whole family can have nearer enough the same meal.

I hate the fact that your DD is coming back home and the first couple of comments are all about her cooking her own food. If you are cooking for everyone else but making her cook her own meal it is a bit rubbish. I'm not saying she shouldn't cook from time to time but for the first few comments just seem harsh.

abitoflight · 25/06/2018 22:27

So here's the plan:
She cooks one night a week
I cook veggie one night
I do fish one night
I do a batch cook of vegetarian so she can have those if I'm doing something I cba to do veggie versions of as working/out late
Stuff like meat and salad/veg easy enough as she can have veggie sausages/quoin thing etc
I just need to sit and plan
We'll cook 2 vegetarian curries together on Friday Smile

AssassinatedBeauty · 25/06/2018 22:29

Sounds like a good plan.

milkysmum · 25/06/2018 22:30

Well i don't really think it's thst much faff but then I'm veggie and the rest of the family not. We frequently cook 2 separate 'recipe ' meals. Try to cook extra and freeze maybe?

AdaColeman · 25/06/2018 22:41

If it were me, I'd be looking at dishes that were vegetarian but would also work as a side dish to meat or fish. Things like a summer vegetable stew served with sliced gammon, oven baked risotto served with baked fish, macaroni cheese served with sausages, aubergine parmigiana served with baked chicken breasts.

I like Hugh FW Veg Everyday for ideas when vegetarian DS comes to stay.

abitoflight · 25/06/2018 22:46

Ada another good idea ty
Did a ratatouille lat week and did similar so will look at others

OP posts:
Zintox · 25/06/2018 22:50

Yabu

Just have two pans and cook simultaneously. I'm Vegan and that's what I do.

Hillarious · 25/06/2018 22:53

I'd suggest avoiding vegetarian gravy granules. I simply use vegetable stock with Bisto powder, a splash of red wine and a dollop of Marmite. Much nicer and perfectly acceptable to the meat eaters in our house.

nokidshere · 25/06/2018 23:12

DH is vegetarian and the rest of us aren't. We eat a lot of vegetarian food and, as someone suggested upthread, it's really easy to make veggie dishes the side dish of a meat meal. So if I make dh a vegetable risotto for instance, I make it for everyone and then do some chicken schnitzels for the meat eaters to have with it.

ginghamstarfish · 25/06/2018 23:17

Good plan, OP, but why can't she cook more for herself if she's 19 and only working part time (and if you eat fish you're not a vegetarian)!
