Key stage 2 sports day tomorrow 24-26C!

Hi all this is more of a WWYD really?

So DC y3,y4,y5(sen),y6....Have got their sports day tomorrow at 13:15pm until 14:45pm.
We live in the north east region and temperature tomorrow is going to be 24-26C! Like today!

WWYD question is would you allow your children to do sports day in this blistering weather?

As if it was freezing or raining the school would call it off, As you are all aware we are having a Heat Wave!

So why don't the school call it off? As children been out in this weather for 2 hours with out activity and constant topping up with sun cream and a hat of course is bad enough, Let alone with doing a circuit of sport activities without been topped up with sun cream!!!

So AIBU to state to the school that I do not want my children doing sports day tomorrow cause of the weather?
Spoke to DCs they are very active kids but have clearly stated it is too hot! (Seeing head in the morning)

Thanks

If your children don't do Sports Day, who will supervise them?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 25/06/2018 17:58

Ours is Wednesday - predicted 31 degrees!

JessambardKingdomBrunel · 25/06/2018 17:58

If they go into school they will have to do sports day, as there will be no one inside the school to supervise them.

If you don't want them to do it, fair enough, but you'll have to keep them home.

vandrew4 · 25/06/2018 18:00

why do you need to constantly top up the suncream? it's effective for something like 6 - 8 hours

LynetteScavo · 25/06/2018 18:00

I think that's fine for KS2.

Factor 50, a sun hat and a water bottle, job done.

I would want to make sure sun cream is applied correctly though.

whylie · 25/06/2018 18:01

I don't mind taking them home, all of my children are fair skin and burn very easily.
31C omg!
I don't think I could handle that!

As sun cream not prescribed the teachers or assistants can not do it for them, that means them doing it them selfs correctly, y5 DS is disabled and can not do this, the others would give it ago but will worry like one has said that it is not applied correctly.

Wednesday here too, predicted 28/29. Plenty of fluids, cream and hats, they'll be fi

rainbowlou · 25/06/2018 18:06

Ours is this week from 9-2 😩

whylie · 25/06/2018 18:08

Vandrew4; I applied suncream to all my children correctly also it was 5 star rated factor 50 they have still caught the sun today! That is them been outside for break and lunch, were as tomorrow it will be break and lunch with nearly extra 2 hours on top of that!

You do realise that children play sports outside in Australia, California, Florida, Spain and many other places well over 30 degrees and are just fine.

Sunscreen, water, and a hat- they'll be fine.

whylie · 25/06/2018 18:10

Rainbowblu;
9-2 omg !
May I ask why that long?

Confused
whylie · 25/06/2018 18:12

Zoe Washburn;
Yes! I do realise that!
Problem is my children are adapted to British weather not Australia etc!

Friday here but 10 - 12, DD is only EYFS, the messages from the school have already staters re: suncream, hats, water etc!

Sirzy · 25/06/2018 18:12

Ds has his on Wednesday. I won’t be stopping him taking part.

As always he will have 8 hour sun cream on before going in. Plenty of fluids and sit in the shade. He won’t wear a hat (or shorts 🙄) thanks to his sensory issues.

I do think in this country we do tend to over react to a bit of sun!

Wendalicious · 25/06/2018 18:13

KS1 Wednesday too! 9-3 Hmm

Pa1oma · 25/06/2018 18:15
Confused

26 is not that hot OP! Where are you, Finland? It's over 30 in London and temps predicted to rise, but sports days and general life still going ahead as far as I can tell.

rainbowlou · 25/06/2018 18:16

@whylie oh it’s a huge event here! Races, picnic, more races, prize giving at the end!!

whylie · 25/06/2018 18:17

Sirzy;

Over reacting?!
Asking advice have not reacted to it yet!
Also my DS has rare syndrome where he can not talk and constantly dribbles so have to make sure he is always hydrated.
Didn't realise been concerned about your children in heat they not exactly used too is a crime?!
It is not just the burning side of it, it heat stroke too!

But will you also be at sports’ day? So you can reapply the cream for them?

Aragog · 25/06/2018 18:19

Use a decent quality once a day cream, with a small top up bottle if they are likely to get wet or rub their skin a lot.

Full water bottles - you could freeze them overnight so they are still cold for later in the day.

Hat and a light weight cardi or thin long sleeved top if likely to have no shade.

I'd also suggest sunglasses too as many people do neglect protecting their eyes from the sun.

I wouldn't worry about break time - its 15/20 minute max. Lunch time a bit longer, but once you've taken out time for eating its again only about 30-40 minutes. So normal day should be fine, esp as many playgrounds have some shaded areas.

For Sports Day suggest they can sit in the shade too??

Re. them not taking part - I think you'd have to take them out of school to do that. There will be no staff to supervise them, and tbh many children wouldn't be happy with being the only ones sat inside away from their classmates.

Aragog · 25/06/2018 18:20

Does your Y5 child have a 1:1? I'd have thought a child with significant SEND would have different rules re suncream, if not able to apply it themselves. Is that not the case at your school?

Seniorcitizen1 · 25/06/2018 18:20

Get a grip - no wonder our young people are growing up as weak snowflakes

whylie · 25/06/2018 18:21

JaneAusten;
I spoke to receptionist and asked what about sun cream? As surely the head etc are not going to allow parents to apply sun cream? To which she responded no they won't allow that but will allow the children too apply their own
