Does anyone else turn into a wobbly Victorian when they need to see the doctor?

"Wobbly Victorian" was a phrase used by a Mumsnetter a while ago and I thought it an apt description!

Anyone else go a bit shaky at having to see their GP - or any other HCP for that matter? Or do you just breeze in to the surgery and not sit there looking at all the posters on the wall and getting all the symptoms they warn about

Am a wobbly Victorian too, I go all humble and twitchy and come out with weird shit.
In real life I am not like this.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/06/2018 11:57

No, but what a brilliant phrase!!

KurriKurri · 25/06/2018 12:01

I go a bit bluff and hearty, desperate to show I am not a malingerer
'Thought I'd better pop in with this - I'm sure it's nothing - just a scratch'

Gilead · 25/06/2018 12:03

Nah, my dad was a GP, he used to say diagnosis was 50% guess work, 50% luck!

Rachie1973 · 25/06/2018 12:04

Yup. I have severe health anxiety and avoid doctors like the plague. I can't read anything health related as I know I'll play it back to me :(

Northernpowerhouse · 25/06/2018 12:05

Second to bluff and hearty Kurri but just on the outside. Inside feeling all wobbly and victorian.

gamerwidow · 25/06/2018 12:06

kurrikurri I’m the same by the time I’ve explained what’s wrong with me I’m practicality back out the door going ‘actually there’s nothing wrong with me as you were’ even if I’ve got an arm hanging off or something.

thenightsky · 25/06/2018 12:07

Yep, that's me too. Despite the fact I used to be a bloody nurse!

Mousefunky · 25/06/2018 12:07

I’ve heard it termed ‘white coat syndrome’ on here too! Never heard it before Mumsnet. I always get incredibly nervous before any medical appointment, even just a simple dental check up. No idea why, I just hate it.

agedknees · 25/06/2018 12:08

Conjures up images of Rita’s sidekick in the cabin (think her name was Thelma) many years ago in Corrie.

GlitterNails · 25/06/2018 12:08

I get incredibly nervous and very wobbly! I’ve had so many bad experiences now I dread every appointment and get so relieved at the smallest sign of any kindness!

Carboholic · 25/06/2018 12:10

My (otherwise textbook) blood pressure goes up like mad in the presence of a HCP. Particularly difficult in pregnancy when people are twitchy about high blood pressure and heart rate.

happinessiseggshaped · 25/06/2018 12:11

Not really, after two fairly traumatic births with rooms full of people I'm not massively bothered. But I do apparently have 'needle phobia'. I don't think I have needle phobia, I just have to insist on lying down before injections or blood tests or a faint in a heap on the floor.

Fintress · 25/06/2018 12:13

Unfortunately I've had far too many appointments over the years due to being diagnosed with a chronic condition so it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Not that I go to my GP much at all, it's usually regular consultant appointments. However when it comes to the dentist it's a different story, I'm a wreck, even though I go every 3 months (alternating check up and hygienist).

Grin My voice goes all breathy!

It took me a few visits over a number of years to realise that when the GP asks me "how are you?", they're not being chatty - they want to know what I'm there for rather than me smiling winsomely and saying "I'm fine thanks" Smile

Rachie - health anxiety really is the pits.

I almost make a script before i go.. telling myself ill go in all confident and tell them all the details and itll be fine.
I get there and become this shy sheepish thing that plays down whats wrong and forgets most of my symptoms until im home again.

TesstheTimid · 25/06/2018 13:05

I like to have a good Google before I go as I'm sure HCPs appreciate my self-diagnosis and suggestions for treatment and medication! Don't know why they bother with all that training really ....

Loyaultemelie · 25/06/2018 13:10

I'm of the I'm fine thanks while blushing furiously and desperately trying to cover up the severed limb type Blush

TesstheTimid · 25/06/2018 13:13

Oh God! Dr Sarah is on Jeremy Vine just now discussing awful inner ear and balance problems Shock

Our GP is an old family friend so not bothered by him at all and once you've spent long periods in ICU you forget about any loss of dignity. Hospitals freak me out. I shake at the thought. I almost died following fairly routine, albeit major surgery due to a surgeon's negligence.

DownWithThisSortaThing · 25/06/2018 13:25

Haha what a brilliant phrase. I am like this too. I get nervous for some bizarre reason and sometimes feel slightly guilty and embarrassed to be there even though I only go to the doctor if I really have to. I have actually welled up a couple of times for no apparent reason when I’ve been trying to explain what the problem is and got slightly flustered Blush

TesstheTimid · 25/06/2018 19:52

I'm fascinated by people who don't get stressed by a trip to the surgery!

kirta · 25/06/2018 19:57

I avoid anything medical at all! An absolute nightmare. My BP would shoot up every time I went to midwife, and even ended up in hospital because my pulse was so fast. Pure white coat syndrome.
I also try and diagnose myself and just get the GP to agree e.g. so, I know I have tonsillitis, could you just have a quick look Blush
I also think everything ends in death. Was given an ECG as pulse when pulse was fast and I automatically thought I had an undiagnosed heart problem.
I am so pleased to read others get as stressed to.
Wobbly Victorian Club!

kirta · 25/06/2018 19:59

Too not to. I have not diagnosed myself with Poor Grammaritis. Yet.

sayanythingelse · 25/06/2018 20:01

A wobbly Victorian 😂
I don't mind for general things but I seem to become the ultimate prude when it comes to getting my bits out unless I'm giving birth. I need to go for my smear but I keep making the excuse that "I only had a baby 6 months ago, my fanny is still angry with me".
