To think opening your own business isn't as plain sailing as dp is hoping.

So.
Dp is mega enthusiastic about opening his own business in a field he's had lots of years doing and has all qualifications and general equipment. The loan would be for the ground rent and some large equipment
He's now saying about looking at a business loan.. Of 100k.
It terrifies me.
He does honestly know what he's talking about but I honestly think he don't realise it's not just set hours. It will be much more and would be bringing the work home with him and stressing himself out.

I'd love for it to work for him. However I think its a huge risk.

I feel IABU putting a ' downer on it' but I'm a worrier.

Can he not rent space at an existing garage (a bit like hairdressers do with chairs in the salon) so that he can build a client base first?

Or look to buy an existing business?

I have no experience but my partner says 100k is more than he would need (in fact even up to twice as much)

I recently became self employed (completely different type of work) and even with pretty guaranteed work I have found cashflow hard with invoices paid slowly etc - make sure you have a few months living expenses as a buffer we would have been lost without ours lately

The fixed costs will be high, does he really need to have premesis or could he try it mobile to see if it works out with lower costs?
Remember the bigger you get, the bigger your bills are and you need good cash flow to get through this. Even if he does well the risk of over trading is real (bitter experience).

He could consider buying s franchise? I would imagine there are some suitable ones. That way he gets a lot of back up available.
