To Rip My Eyes & Throat Out?

Smokeahontas · 24/06/2018 22:11

Fucking hayfever fuck. I’ve never had this level of it, it’s beyond a joke. My nose has been bleeding since yesterday, my throat feels like I’ve taken a power sander to it and my eyes look like I’ve been on a 72 hour bender.

Tried loratadine, Otrivine nasal spray & eye drops. Now debating double dosing on loratadine for even a hint of relief.

The Benedryl I use in the US is apparently a different drug than what is sold under that brand in the UL. Here it's diphenhydramine.

www.mind.org.uk/information-support/drugs-and-treatments/sleeping-pills-minor-tranquillisers-a-z/diphenhydramine/

It has never made me drowsy and it is a very effective antihistamine. If you can get it over the counter or have your doctor rx it, it's worth a try.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 25/06/2018 11:08

I've had hayfever for thirty years but this year is particularly bad. My eyes are so puffy and red, constantly watering and itching, my nose is itching and running and the roof of my mouth is going crazy. I have been taking anti histamines for over a month and yesterday took two 1 a day tablets and it still didn't stop (but did make me fall asleep by 9pm!).

Not a lot we can do except suffer through it. Sad

Can anyone recommend a powder based nasal spray? Either otc or prescription. I used to have one prescribed years ago and then they changed the 'recipe' (sorry. Can't think of the word I'm looking for, not the name of it!) so that it was now a liquid spray. I can't use the liquid nasal sprays and never found a replacement powder one.

Smokeahontas · 25/06/2018 11:52

Between the fexofenadine and giving inside my nostrils a coating of Vaseline, I’ve been able to get some relief. Took about an hour or so for the fexofenadine to kick in, but it really is noticeable. Just hope the Vaseline moisturises the rawness of my nostrils.

I'm a bit surprised that you needed an rx for the fexofenadine. It's been over the counter here for ages.

TellsEveryoneRealFacts · 25/06/2018 14:42

Two sudafed a day, one morning and one mid afternoon and prevalin for me. The only things working right now.

Teacupinastorm · 25/06/2018 14:47

I came on here to ask for advice on hayfever!
I have been on double daily doses on fexofenadine and that didn't help. As a last resort I paid for the Kenalog injection three weeks ago which I thought had worked or dramatically reduced my symptoms but then last night I had the worst attack I've ever had in my life. Today I am in a hayfever fog, so much so I don't feel safe driving.

Called the doctors and said I was desperate but no appointments until next Monday and nothing over the phone either. It's getting to the point now where I am cancelling plans if they require being outside for too long. It's hell. My sympathies OP.

Rachie1973 · 25/06/2018 14:56

I didn't get hayfever til middle age which knocked me for 6

I only just found out that you can have a permanent sore throat on ONE side with hayfever. I also found out it can feel like you have a feather stuck there.

I have awful health anxiety and you can't imagine the mess of my head after all those symptoms!

Homeopathy worked for me. I had horrible hay fever for decades and a few homeopathic remedies (prescribed by a professional) worked so now I barely get it at all. But don't try self-treatment with remedies bought over the counter--I don't think that works.

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 25/06/2018 16:32

I take fexofenadine and top up with Beconase nasal spray. It seems to be under control at the moment thank god.

0lgaDaPolga · 25/06/2018 16:34

Same and I can’t even bloody take anything while I’m pregnant. I hate summer!

Smokeahontas · 25/06/2018 17:12

I’ve been applying the Vaseline inside my nose all day. A while ago, ran a sink of warm water, took a deep breath and plunged my nose in. Removed when I needed to breathe. Cleaned out nostrils with cotton wool buds. What came out could probably be a YouTube video but my nose is feeling a lot better now!

I've seen a powder nasal spray in Boots but it is a barrier spray rather than a treatment spray.
Other than that, you all have my sympathies. My throat has been awful due to the post-nasal drip but Beconase spray seems to be helping. Ironically it smells really floral!

SparklyUnicornShite · 25/06/2018 18:06

Hay fever has fooked me up this year.
I have tried everything thing going and still my hayfever has got so bad that I am recovering from an anaphylactic shock. Too scared to set foot outside now. Sad

Fintress · 25/06/2018 18:07

My husband was diagnosed with a severe dust and pollen allergy recently and was prescribed fexofenadine. It comes in different doses, he takes a higher dose than me.

Perihelion · 25/06/2018 18:26

You can also try snorting water and spitting it out of your mouth. Truly minging, but sometimes is the only way to get the pollen out.
I do like old school piriton, but it makes me sleepy and not safe to drive. Am also using Beclometasone nasal spray, which is working so well that I've not snorted water this year.
However, DD and me for the last couple of days have had a weird sore throat, which I think is peaking hayfever.

MissConductUS · 25/06/2018 20:11

The pollen removal can really help. It's a bit gross, but I use a sinus irrigator. It washes the pollen out of your sinuses and nose so that your body stops reacting to it. This is the system I have and have been quite happy:

www.amazon.co.uk/SinuPulse-Elite-Advanced-Irrigation-System/dp/B001CWT4JI/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me&tag=mumsnetforum-21

The same unit is about half that price on the Amazon US site, so it might pay to order it there and pay the international shipping. You'd need a voltage/electric adapter for the US version too.

You have to fight seasonal allergies with every possible approach and hope that they add up to relative comfort.

Believeitornot · 26/06/2018 06:42

I've just tried Prevalin. I've not stopped sneezing since taking it

It took me a couple of goes to get used to it - I had loads of sneezing at first!

KakunaRattata · 26/06/2018 07:10

Anyone who hasn't tried the Benadryl it's worth a go, it's been around well over a decade (used to be benadryl plus) so not a new idea, and is the only thing that lets DH go out, that includes trying everything the GP gave him. It's non drowsy (I'm v sensitive and I can take with no side effects unlike loratadine zzz).

Jorah · 26/06/2018 07:17

The sinus cleaning is good.

I felt so smug as I had been eating local honey all winter and didn't get hay fever this year.

Until about a fortnight ago when it's kicked in with a vengeance Sad certrazine, the nose spray are both helping. I also want to rip my eyes out op you have my sympathies

picklemepopcorn · 26/06/2018 07:33

Prevalin has helped DH and DS1 hugely. DS2 doesn't like it, burns his face apparently.
