To panic about bicarbonate of soda and chickenpox!?

May be worrying unnecessarily! Little
Boy has chicken pox- he’s three and suffering badly.

For the last 2 days I’ve bathed him in bicarb of soda as I’ve read online it’s helpful- however everything I initially read said half a cup- now I’m reading everywhere 3-4 tablespoons at most!

Have I possibly done damage by doing this?! Or am I worrying over morning ?!

Help please!

Is there much in those two measurements? I would say so. He’ll be fine.

Inneedofglasses · 24/06/2018 20:30

Half a cup is 3-4 tablespoons

FadedRed · 24/06/2018 20:31

No harm done.
Not much good done either, TBH, calamine dabbed on to the itchy spots is more effective.

Imaystillbedrunk · 24/06/2018 20:32

There can't be much between the two measurements. He'll be fine.

KirstenRaymonde · 24/06/2018 20:32

4 tablespoons and half a cup are basically the same amount.

Allfednonedead · 24/06/2018 20:32

No risk at all! Bicarb is pretty innocuous stuff. You can also make it into a paste with water and put in on extra itchy bits.
What worked for my itchy babies was porridge baths. Put some porridge oats into an old sock and tie it up (just to stop them getting all over the bath) and put it in the bath with the poxy child.
Really soothing.

Excitedforxmas · 24/06/2018 20:33

I used to put the whole tub in

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 24/06/2018 20:33

My post should have said ‘I wouldn’t have thought so’. Hope that was clear.

Bue · 24/06/2018 20:33

To be pedantic, half a cup is 8 Tbsp, not 4 Grin But he will be fine! Don't sweat it.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 24/06/2018 20:36

As long as you're not giving ibuprofen, then it should be fine!
I know the feeling though, my eldest had an awful case of chicken pox and I just felt so bloody helpless with it all.
There's also a poxcilin spray that can help with the itching.

abbsisspartacus · 24/06/2018 20:36

Use vira soothe my son has very few scars and got over it easier than his older sib

Imknackeredzzz · 24/06/2018 20:38

Thanks guys! Suddenly saw I’d given too much and panicked!

Unless the volume of bath water was also specified, you can’t really get too hey up about the amount/concentration of bicarbonate.

TittyGolightly · 24/06/2018 20:40

calamine dabbed on to the itchy spots is more effective.

Calamine dries the skin causing additional itchiness.

Oat baths, Poxclin and vitamin e oil are much better.

Redrosebelle · 24/06/2018 20:42

No it’ll be fine. Regular baths in this stuff tend to help keep them clean too which stops them getting infected. However don’t use calamine lotion, it’s temporarily cooling but then dries the skin and causes more itching!

Pikehau · 24/06/2018 20:45

Have a look to see if oats are still recommended. I put some oats in a pair of tights and into bath

TittyGolightly · 24/06/2018 20:46

I ground whole jumbo oats and tied them into a muslin face cloth before putting into a cool running bath. Squeezed out the creamy substance. Made a huge difference to DD.

fuzzywuzzy · 24/06/2018 20:49

Bicarbonate soda just helps the spots dry out faster. It won’t hurt him. I used whole boxes of the stuff when mine had the pox.

Also get calamine lotion to help soothe itching.

TittyGolightly · 24/06/2018 20:50

Also get calamine lotion to help soothe itching.

See above.

Ansumpasty · 24/06/2018 20:54

I poured the whole box in, worry not Smile

Frogsareawesome · 24/06/2018 20:56

My 3 have just had the pox and porridge oat baths seemed to work really well

TattyFrench · 24/06/2018 20:58

I did the porridge in sock (weird nylon tights that I didn't know I had) into bath for my DC, it really helped. Cheap and cheerful and they liked squishing the tights to get the cream out into the bath.

Goldmandra · 24/06/2018 20:58

He will be fine.

However, if you have a coloured bathroom suite be careful. DD2 had the pox in really hot weather so I left the water in the bath all day and just kept topping up with a bit of hot to take the chill off it for her to get it. It bleached the bath.

Luckily we were already planning to replace it so no harm done.

Chamomile tea in a bath worked wonders with my dcs

gillybeanz · 24/06/2018 21:00

I've never heard of this before, you learn something new everyday.
Yes, the measurements will be the same.
Many confuse dessert spoons for table spoons, the latter is about 3 x the size.
