To expect school to have a blue badge space for parents?

My Ds is starting secondary school in September. He has a few transition days coming up soon and I'm expected to take him and collect him from reception. I am disabled and the nearest parking spaces are quite a distance away. Usually I can manage on crutches for short distances but this means I will have to get my wheelchair out and faff about. It's irritating that there's nowhere closer to park. There is space but of course at pick up/drop off times it's chaos. AIBU to ask school to paint a yellow box for BB holders (I'm sure I'm can't be the only disabled parent) I think I've made sense!

Saints - it's not that simple.

It's down to the school to provide disabled spaces, not the council.

Our council have nothing to do with the disabled spaces in DS' school and cannot enforce anything on those parking in them. It's down to the school who have tried but to no avail.

The police can't do a thing. They're on school property.

I teach in a one form entry Primary and we have a tiny car park, but we have a designated space for a disabled driver which is always kept empty. I thought that by law the school would have to have at least one.

provision of blue badge parking in a school is at the discretion of the school (private land) ..
.

Ok, for the purpose of clarification. Yes, for transition days, parent is asked to pick up and collect from the school reception. I'm also thinking farther ahead, when he's actually there, I will suggest he walk to dd's primary school where I will meet him. I would expect (possibly erroneously) that as a public building, some BB parking provision be made. I've had fizzy plonk now (on a school night too! Shock horror) so have no coherent thoughts. Wibble!

This has made me think about the disabled spaces in out local schools. The First school (years R-4) has one disabled space. The middle school (years 5-8) has one disabled space, The college (year 9 upwards to 5th form) has a few at the entrance to the college and a couple more at the entrance to the gym within the grounds (quite a walk from there to the college entrance). I don't think we are too badly off, only once have we not been able to use one when needed, so DP dropped me off and drove to a parking space, then came an got me at the end of the event. Had I been alone and driving, I would have struggled then.

For parents evening when it happens email the school. My son school use to field play ground for parents car park for such events .
My son was disable so when i had to pick him up from school when ill. There was a blue badge space ispace in car park .
As he was disable he had a taxi to school .

But what would you do if the blue badge spaces fill up?

Also as you say it can be chaotic, I wouldn’t put it past some parents to park in the blue badge spaces regardless as ‘they’ll only be a minute’

Chattymummyhere · 24/06/2018 23:00

Private land doesn’t have to have B.B. spaces. Not many schools even have parking that is not staff only. Our local secondary is staff only, parents would have to use the local shopping centre car park. Both carparks are just as far away from the school entrance.

MidniteScribbler · 24/06/2018 23:07

We have one accessible space in the staff carpark and none on the road. Parking is a nightmare. We about about six families that need accessible spaces, so they just park the staff in during the time they are there. None of us are arriving or leaving at that time anyway.
