To think expensive mugs don't chip less?

We needs some new mugs and plates. DH is saying that the reason they got chipped and broken is because they were poor quality "cheap" ones from places like M&S and Debenhams and that we should buy really expensive ones because they will last longer.

IABU to think this is nonsense? I really don't think it makes a difference and we have had the old plates and mugs for over 10 years, through 6 house moves and with two DC!

I have cheap and expensive mugs and plates, and I don't think the price matters - I think the material matters more.
I've found that porcelain lasts longer than earthenware and stoneware.

I have some Royal Copenhagen plates and mugs that came with a guarantee - if broken within a certain time, they'll exchange it for new.

I really like the look of Le Creuset mugs, but I find that they get a dull surface in the dishwasher, and they scratch easily which doesn't look great.

I buy Sainsburys mugs as someone upthread mentioned. They last a lot longer than any others I've smashed to pieces owned.

I think it's more down to how your family is handling the mugs. We're a family of 5 with an assortment of crockery. Some Tesco cheapies, some souvenirs from holidays, ones from Easter Egg sets and the rest are an expensive set. None are chipped and I can recall only one ever being so. Your washer-upper needs sacked. Train one of the kids up to do it instead.

I actually found the opposite.

Cheap crockery tends to be very thick china (and makes your brew cold very quickly) whereas the more expensive stuff is much finer.

The finer it is, the more delicate it is, the more delicate it is, the more easily it chips.

All of our denby crockery is chipped. Our mugs from Costco are completely chip free, even after being dropped several times Hmm

I suspect if there was a nuclear attack, only cockroaches and Costco mugs would survive.
