AIBU to think I'm being ripped off?

I agreed to buy something from a friend of a friend. We agreed on a price. My friend said their friend had posted it and I could pay when it arrived, but it has not yet arrived. Today I get a message from my friend asking if I can pay the money (still no item arrived) and asking for £40 more than agreed. When I queried this, they said 'oh he had to order some stuff from another supplier so the cost has increased.' But they told me weeks ago it was already posted!

They should've agreed a price increase with me first, right?

AIBU to be suspicious and to refuse to pay the extra? AIBU to be annoyed with my friends who recommended this guy and who are now making me feel bad for putting my foot down about paying more?

:-(

Nope. Price was agreed and item not arrived. Have they got proof of postage?

OwlinaTree · 23/06/2018 12:11

I wouldn't be paying anything to it arrives as that was the agreement you made.

Tonicwaterandgin · 23/06/2018 12:11

I wouldn't pay until I received and then only the price agreed at the start!

El1995 · 23/06/2018 12:11

Nope, I certainly wouldn't be fobbed off by this guy, they should have notified you when the price changed

Nanasueathome · 23/06/2018 12:11

I would not pay anything at all until the item is received by you

MissConductUS · 23/06/2018 12:11

If you agreed to a price, that's the price. And don't pay anything until it arrives. If he insists on the higher price offer to return it at his cost.

Was this something custom made for you?

Aprilshouldhavebeenmyname · 23/06/2018 12:12

Easier to cancel.
Or you will be accused of stealing item /not paying up etc.

NomNomNomNom · 23/06/2018 12:34

YANBU. You pay the original price when you have received the item (in the state you agreed upon). If they haven't sent it yet just cancel.

NorthernJugni · 23/06/2018 12:50

Yeah I would rather cancel it or send it back than pay the extra now I've got my back up about it all!

I would not be paying and I wouldn't be wanting it now either

Keep your foot down OP

sonjadog · 23/06/2018 12:56

You pay what you agreed on when it arrives. And I would ask them what do they mean it costs more when it is already posted?

NorthernJugni · 23/06/2018 12:58

Exactly! How did the price go up during the journey?
