To ask some questions to any gamers out there?

I'm interested to hear from die hard or even medium hard gamers out there.

I wouldn't class myself as a gamer although I do game but very sporadically and tend to get bored or give up when I find it too hard!

I started off playing nintendo when I was really young then moved onto SNES and then PlayStation.

I dusted off my Xbox 360 recently and introduced my 5yo DS to it and we play some of the Lego titles together which is lovely as I have many fond memories of gaming with my dad when he was younger.

I have read on here about some households where both the mum and dad are gamers and I'm interested about this.

Mainly about what games you play, are the multiplayer online, what those kind of games involve? How long/often you play, do you play other games with your kids, when you started gaming etc etc.

None of my friends/family are gamers so have no points of reference!

I'm just interested in a gamers lifestyle and how it came about. Do you have all the hi-tech for gaming?

The last time I was on the xbox was 2014 as seen on my last game saves. I'm finding it quite relaxing overall.

And I'm also looking for some ideas of some games I might be interested in as ita a minefield! I'm not planning on upgrading my console as this may be another faze of mine!

We all have very different profiles at the moment. I'm playing on an MMORPG with my sister who lives in Seattle, while DH & the kids are building in Minecraft multiplayer.

My DC are too young to play online so it's mostly Minecraft (either solo or on closed servers with his classmates), vintage games (they're loving Midway Games at the moment and I'm loving listening to them argue over who gets to be the wizard in Gauntlet) and the occasional Forza or racing game.

ByeGermsByeWorries · 22/06/2018 21:37

Me and my partner play world of Warcraft. We have two gaming pcs together in our games room and on the weekend when my son goes to his dads we spend most of the weekend on it. We don't smoke or drink or really enjoy going out or partying, we are quite introverted and boring Blush so games are what we spend our money and free time on

We might have the odd hour or two on weekdays.

If I don't fancy Warcraft I play Witcher or Skyrim on my 360. I don't play with my son as he isn't able to grasp the complexities of Warcraft and prefers to play mine craft. Since we are all in the same room he can talk to us and show us things.

whywhywhywhywhyyy · 22/06/2018 21:39

I'm not that big a gamer, but my mum is. We used to play together and it's one of my happiest memories :)

The ones that stick out are Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII. Sometimes we'd have had trouble with a boss the night before, and I'd come to play the next evening with her and she'd have been grinding up my characters to make it easier for me to beat them.

Xbox 360 doesn't support Unreal Engine 4 so things like Fortnite are out. Fun ones might be Viva Piñata for you and DS. I love the Final Fantasy games and the 13 series was brilliant - bit too much for a 5 year old but fun for you!

CigarsofthePharoahs · 22/06/2018 21:40

We use a PC with Steam.
So far, all the Lego games have been very popular. Lego Star Wars in particular.
We've also had good fun with Space Engineers. However, my son is too young for playing online.

InfiniteSheldon · 22/06/2018 21:42

I'm playing Assasins Creed Black sails atm, I loved Skyrim and the Fallout games were awesome. I started taking when my dc were tiny and still p!ay online with my now adult ds (32!) Were playing Player Unknown Battlegrounds. It's great for problem solving, learning about teamwork and taking turns. I might not play for a year or more then I'll p!ay loads I'll be gaming in my nursing home.

gamerchick · 22/06/2018 21:46

I may spend too much time on here but your post just says survey or such like to me Grin

Why not upgrade? New consoles are mostly media centres now, the gaming part wasn't even the driving force imo. There's more stuff can be done with them.

As for games, impossible to suggest. We all have our preferences and playing co-op with your kid is fab to get info and worries they're having out of them.

YayImALlamaAgain · 22/06/2018 21:47

I started gaming because of my mum, actually. She used to play the Might and Magic games and we started taking it turns. She also played Point and Click games like Broken Sword and that got me hooked on P&C.

I used to play MMORPG during my student years, but since working life I've found offline RPGs much easier to drop in and out of. I like immersive games like Fallout - probably relating to M&M.

Since DS came along I've not had much time to game (DS is 11 months old and I'm still only half way through Witcher 3 in that time).

I honestly don't know how much gaming I'm likely to do as DS gets older. However I have really lovely memories of playing Mario Karts growing up and other such family games so I will dust off some of the consoles and introduce DS when the time is right.

I would love to answer as we are a very keen gaming family but your post sounds like a survey or, cough cough, a journalist looking for a story. Especially given that gaming addiction has been in the news. Sorry if you are genuine OP.

lonelyorchid · 22/06/2018 22:06

I know it sounds like gaming survey due to the number of questions I asked Grin

I've been on here for 6+ years, since I was pregnant with my now 5 year old. I NC change regularly due to paranoia!

@gamerchick I recognise your name, you've been here a while!

I don't mind the doubters Smile

A lot of people are gamers, I just don't happen to know any in RL! Haven't seen a thread asking about them before so thought it would be interesting since I'm back into it.

I'm liking all the replies about memories playing with family. My parents are divorced and it was what my Dad and I did when I was there EOW back when we were on AOL dial up! We definitely bonded over it, I did the bits on Zelda he couldn't and vice versa.

Love Lego Star Wars too! Reminds me of Zelda Smile

@gamerchick not planning on upgrading due to the cost mainly. I went on and on at now DH to get an Xbox when we were pretty hard up and he surprised me with one and then I boxed it back up not too long after Blush

OP posts:
DeadDoorpost · 22/06/2018 22:13

DH and I play SimCity on our phones but when I get the chance (6mo baby) I'll play assassins creed on the PlayStation or midnight club. Favourites on the ps2 are Tomb Raider and midnight club 3, medal of honour and Sims 2 pets.

Then on the DS I'm a huge Pokemon fan.

I'm the N64 its got to be mariokart and James bond for me, whatever the name of the game is that my DH plays..so quite a mix

Raven88 · 22/06/2018 22:25

I am a heavy gamer, I mostly play The Sims4 and Minecraft. I occasionally play GTA and Fortnight. I play on PC and it's not high spec but me and DH are planning to upgrade. He is a casual gamer and plays COD, and Need for Speed. We have a PS4 that DH uses.

I started with GTA at 12 on the PS2 which was 18 years ago and then moved on to the Sims And Minecraft. My living room is set up for gaming and I have my corner. I love games that give you a freedom to create your own story and I like to build. Growing up we didn't have a lot of money so I didn't have many games and my PS2 was used for about 5 years. so me and DH got our PC and PS4 as a gift to ourselves.

I don't go on my PC until I do the house work and exercise because I can be on for hours.

mirime · 22/06/2018 22:35

DS loves the Lego games and we enjoy playing them with him, we've actually 100%ed Ninjago Movie game and are now onto Lego superhero games.

I've been gaming for something like 37 years, we had a zx81, then an Acorn Electron, BBC Micro then moved onto PC. I have fond memories of the original Tomb Raider. Tbh these days I mainly play on my phone or replay the Deus Ex games.

DH likes gaming as well, used to play WOW and other MMORPGs, though not so much these days. These days he mainly seems to collect games in Steam sales Grin

All three of us are playing Pokémon Go.

We mainly play on PC, but the PS4 gets a fair amount of use as well. We also have a bunch of older consoles we don't have out at the moment.

lonelyorchid · 22/06/2018 22:39

I have just bought Halo and COD, have never played them before but interested to see if I'd be interested due to all the hype!

I have played Sims when I had a PSP, the only game I have ever completed. Used to play a few on the PC before I had a console.

Has anyone ever played Full Throttle on the PC? Have just remembered it. Must've been mid to late 90s. I loved that game.

I am currently playing GTA 5 though it's not keeping me as hooked as it used to. Have ordered Red Dead Redemption, Tom Clancy Splinter Cell as I used to play that on the PS and enjoyed it and another one something Scrolls as the reviews reeled me in.

lonelyorchid · 22/06/2018 22:41

Ah Tomb Raider. That used to get a fair old play too. I remember my brother in law and sister playing that all the time years ago. I tried the Samsung VR free version, was nostalgic!

Fallout fan here!!!

Was a bit Hmm about Fallout 76 being PvP but having found out more people I know have PS4 I think I will be nagging them to join me in the wasteland.

Also love Skyrim, Shadow of the Colussus and I am looking forward to the latest Hideo Kojima game “Death Stranding”

Basically anything open world with the challenge of getting to places you aren’t meant toWink

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 22/06/2018 22:45

I remember GTA on the PC when it was a birds eye view map!

I’m soooo old!!!

MadRainbow · 22/06/2018 22:51

My DH and I are both gamer types and our DD1 (4yo) is rapidly heading that way. We play Mario and Sonic titles on the Switch and now the update has been released for Minecraft we can all play that together as I could only play the PC version and they play console. We also like the Monster Hunter series though DD won't be able to play that for a while.

DD plays Pokemon on an emulator on her tablet and the original sonic titles, she's definitely better than me on those.

DH will play Legend of Zelda titles for us to watch. DD actually prefers watching games to TV shows or Films. DDs current favourite game to play is Mario Odessey, but she's giving Rayman Legends a go with DH and failing miserably

We are a very Nintendo oriented family as we find the storylines better and more family friendly

SusieFlo · 08/08/2018 11:29

My other half not as big a gamer as me but we both loved Fallout 4 and we're waiting with interest for Fallout 76, which will offer multiplayer for the first time.

My daughter is too young to be interested but my son is allowed to play games with a 7 age rating at weekends and school holidays. He loves the Lego games and enjoys playing multiplayer with me on Harry Potter and Jurassic World. He also loves Crash Bandicoot. (I promise we do air the Morlocks on a regular basis.)

As a family we all enjoy playing Minecraft together. We used to do it on a split screen but now we have a second PS4, which means I can collaborate with my son on creative builds while we sit in separate rooms and chat on a headset. We like to do timed competitive builds, where the build has to be completed in an hour or less.

When the kids are in bed (and we're not in a TV mood) I will play games like Tomb Raider, Fallout, Witcher, Far Cry, etc. Mostly these are 15 or 18 rated so I can't play with the kids around.

Before I had kids I would happily spend a whole weekend immersed in a "big" game. Having a family definitely reduces gaming opportunities. We sometimes we go for months without anyone doing any gaming at all - it tends to happen sporadically, when one of us is having a fad on a new game.

Celebelly · 08/08/2018 11:35

I met my partner through online gaming six years ago! We're now expecting our first child and have every expectation it will be as big as nerd as us :D

DP has a large games room where all the consoles are (it's like a history of gaming in there), and we both have our own gaming PC setups (helps that he is an IT professional so can build our own stuff). We mostly play World of Warcraft together but do play other console games. Generally DP plays more console games by himself –he likes JRPGs and things like Skyrim, whereas I'm a sucker for a good old-fashioned point and click.

I'm quite excited for having a new little gamer on the way. We already have loads of the Lego games and Minecraft, and we also have the PSVR headset which has some really fun kids-type games for it. Although no doubt they will all be out of date by the time our kiddo is old enough to play!

The Nintendo Switch has just come out with some cool thing that lets you build stuff with cardboard and control it using the console: labo.nintendo.com/ I'd imagine if you had an older kid that would be really fun!

Celebelly · 08/08/2018 11:38

We're having to make changes to our gaming lifestyle when the new baby arrives. We both currently play World of Warcraft to a high level, me more so than him, but I'll be stopping competitive raiding at the end of the year as there's no way I can juggle the time commitments with the baby. He will be stopping too and we'll shift more to games that can easily be paused or where you can play the odd hour here and there. We don't really watch TV much, so gaming is what we tend to default to in leisure time. I think that'll still be the case, but we'll just have to be a bit more fluid about it.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 08/08/2018 11:39

I used to play the PlayStation with my dad a lot growing up, crash bandicoot, Spyro, doom etc but got out of it as I grew up.

Then I met DH and he was a big gamer and I got back in to it. We play call of duty together and separately, he likes racing games and I am big assassins creed fan (currently working my way though origins)! DC like crash bandicoot. We don’t play it a lot but usually wait till DC are in bed before playing COD etc

Redken24 · 08/08/2018 11:41

Playing final fantasy xv - either play for nap time if no housework or after dinner for a half hour lol
