GDPR and the school swap shop

Aibu to o think gdpr shouldnt have been used as an excuse for our school uniform swap shop to stop giving parents money for second hand uniform?

I buy as much uniform as I can in there, but sometimes have to get new - and really rely on selling it back to them when dc’s have finished with it and it’s in good nick.

Traditionally they have taken the items plus your name and number so that they can call you when it sells and you can go back and collect a % of the money.

Now they have said they can’t do that and all the proceeds will go elsewhere.

This is an independent school with a massive long uniform requirement list and for example blazers are over £100 new.

Aibu in thinking it’s a shit excuse and they can manage it and be compliant?

They've lost the plot.

ForalltheSaints · 22/06/2018 19:00

If you opt in and consent to your data, so maybe there needs to be a bit of paper to sign.

Frankenterfer · 22/06/2018 19:00

Yes they can manage it to be complaint. It's not like they have to tell you who bought the uniform. They only need your consent to process your personal data to contact you to collect the proceeds.

Cheerbear23 · 22/06/2018 19:01

I don't understand what aspects of this are against gdpr? Presumably they don't say little Johnny's mum bought your pants and here's £5 do they?

ginplease8383 · 22/06/2018 19:02

sounds like an excuse to keep the funds made?!

somewhereovertherain · 22/06/2018 19:02

Nothing to do with GDPR

TigerDroveAgain · 22/06/2018 19:02

Bonkers. They can just sort out a simple privacy notice for use of your data, which is for them to communicate with you only! Probably they just want to stop doing it, which is a different matter.

Stoveding · 22/06/2018 19:02

They now say the funds will go to the school fundraising projects.

Feel bad to kick up a fuss by dh is probably going to do so.

This is nothing to do with GDPR and everything to do with them either misunderstanding or wanting an excuse to keep the money and stop doing the admin around the buying and selling. It must be a bit of a gaff keeping track of what belongs to who so that they can pass on the cash and they're using this as an excuse to stop. Really pisses me off as then people get the wrong idea about laws that are actually there to protect them and help with their life!

VanGoghsDog · 22/06/2018 19:19

Sell it at a car boot sale. A rellie of mine has a DC at private school and everyone knows there is one boot sale that everyone goes to to buy and sell the uniform.

Snowysky20009 · 22/06/2018 19:21

This law won't apply I'm sure,...

kalapattar · 22/06/2018 19:23

"By storing your details, you agree that we can contact you so you can get some of the money. We won't sell your details and we will look after your details safely".

Done.

House4 · 22/06/2018 19:23

I think they may have misunderstood GDPR. You could set up your own Facebook page and everyone sell their own on there?

Allthewaves · 22/06/2018 19:26

Who organises and keeps track of the clothes sold and giving parents money. Sounds like a complicated and thankless job

LittleOwl153 · 22/06/2018 19:34

I think some organisations (schools) are using gdpr as an excuse in the expectation that their parents are too thick to understand. I was told the other day that school could not had out a leaflet about a summer club to all pupils because of gdpr. Someone else that they couldn't sell tickets to a multi-school event for yr 6 - which every other school is selling on their reception - because of gdpr.
I was very tempted to offer the head some gdpr training!

Stoveding · 22/06/2018 20:04

It’s always been manned by parwnts.

It is a faffy way to do it. In ds’s school the shop buys the stock from parents straight away and then sells it - so no details needed.

Will update when we’ve made our thoughts known to school.

They’ve misunderstood GDPR.

Or are just being cheeky.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 22/06/2018 20:13

Liars or idiots or both. If you’re already paying fees I’d be pissed off at not being able to recoup a bit.

Cheby · 22/06/2018 20:32

Start your own uniform selling FB group.

Stoveding · 22/06/2018 21:17

I’ve never made a fb group but it seems a great of idea.
