To Change My Job Because of Brexit?

Zofanjo · 22/06/2018 08:13

I work in a professional services field in an agency setting and a lot of my clients are going to feel a massive hit is Brexit happens. We'll be one of the first services they cut.

It's a relatively small business and although I think it can weather the storm, there's going to be job losses I think.

Anyway, I have the opportunity to go to an interview for a job in a much larger, better known agency with much bigger and more stable clients.

I like my job currently and the people I work for, but the brexit impact is a worry. Am I being silly?

The new job is £5k a year better paid and an hour less of a commute 3 days a week (commute is a similar length to now 2 days a week), there's also a better benefits package.

The big kicker is i've only been in my current job since January and leaving will cause a massive problem for my current company.

WWYD?

@mission

He wasn’t colleague though, he was the recruitment consultant that got OP the job she’s in now.

He’s used data that belongs to his old employer. Whether he’s got an amazing memory or not, imo he shouldn’t use that data.

Singlebutmarried · 22/06/2018 09:56

@zofanjo

Ah I see.

ReservoirDogs · 22/06/2018 10:08

@Singlebutmarried but he isn't working for a competitor but working in-house. Of course he may just remember a candidate who does a certain type of specialist job without stealing the info and even if he did that is between him and his previous employer and nothing to do with the OP.

siwel123 · 22/06/2018 10:08

He searched on LinkedIn. So no he didn't do anything wrong.

AsleepAllDay · 22/06/2018 10:13

Also loyalty can sometimes be misplaced or overrated. Not to say you should be selling company secrets or whatever, but in a year's time they can drop you as easily as they hired you...

Trills · 22/06/2018 10:21

You should seriously be considering the new job even without Brexit.

Having one job that lasted six months won't look bad on your CV if your other jobs have been of a reasonable length - it's only if it's a pattern that it starts to look flaky.

Zofanjo · 22/06/2018 10:41

I was with my previous place 4 years, prior to that I was at Uni, so my CV will go:

Graduated -> Assistant- Exec - Manager in large agency (4 years, 2 promotions) -> Head of Department in smaller company (6 months) -> Head of department for large company (new job).

I basically skipped director level by changing to my current job, worried it will look like I used them for a leg up iyswim?

It doesn't matter honestly.
Trust me it looks fine.

If you're being headhunted I doubt they will care, they want you as much or more than you want them & will straighten it out

Good luck op!

ShoesieQ · 25/06/2018 22:31

Well done Op - and good luck for tomorrow! Let us know how you get on!

Zofanjo · 26/06/2018 19:17

So...

It was a 2 hour long interview And I’m now completely knackered but...

Second interview is in the bag Grin

In his words he ‘just needs his boss to meet me’ and he offered me the second interview by saying ‘well we’ll definitely be having you back in again’ so I think it might come good.

The interview turned into a massive geek out (we have a similar background and our field is a bit geeky) and there was a lot of stuff he said which really resonated with me so it’s definitely s role I’d be interested in.

The loyalty thing is still pecking at my head, but I’m trying to think pragmatically and not emotionally about it. Even without the Brexit thing as you’ve all pointed out, it’s a good decision.

Eep.

Well done on the interview. Sounds wonderful and a good opportunity and good fit.

Trills · 26/06/2018 20:56

Well done!

Cheeseislife · 26/06/2018 21:04

YABU for using Brexit in the title to get more views of your stealth boast masquerading as a moral dilemma Hmm

AsleepAllDay · 27/06/2018 05:16

If you're moving to a competitor, do you know what non compete is in your contract? You may have to take a month or more off to comply with that

Zofanjo · 27/06/2018 07:38

asleep I had the exact same thought last night, but checked my contract and there’s no non compete.

cheeseislife Dfod. I have GAD so big decisions like this are a head fuck. At the time, the Brexit thing was my biggest driver but after writing it down and getting some noise from an echo chamber, it clarified the decision.

Do you often assume people are boasting when they talk about opportunities in their lives? You might want to examine that.

Got it Grin

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 04/07/2018 16:23

Is that you op? Well done if so!

user1499173618 · 04/07/2018 16:28

Please don’t think you owe your current company “loyalty”. You really, really don’t.
