Kind, generous acts. Have you done/made one?

I was wondering about what acts, gestures or otherwise have people done, at little or no cost/benefit to themselves to make others smile or feel happy. This came off the back of a thread where a complete stranger complimented someone on a dress they were trying on in a shop.

I know I often comment to colleagues if they are wearing something nice - a nice top or otherwise.

I've given someone my trolley token at the supermarket - they needed one and had no change.

I donate blood.

And having gestures done to/for me?

Someone paid for my shopping when I had forgotten my card and my toddler son was hysterical that we were leaving "our" stuff behind. At the weekend, I had gotten DS into a trolley at the supermarket then realised I'd left my bag in the car. The layout of the carpark would have made taking him in the trolley back to the car would have been a pain in the arse. I was trying to lift him out of the seat of the trolley and a lady offered to help. I said "Actually, I need to nip to the car for my bag (you could see it from where we were) would I be able to grab it and you watch him?" She very kindly did. Made it far easier for me.

So... over to you... What have you had done to you, or have you done to others?

I knew one of my friends was struggling financially but didn't want to offend her by offering money. I worked only part time so had two days a week off with my daughter at this time. I asked if I could spend one day a week looking after her daughter and posed it as "wouldn't it be nice for our girls to have a day together out of nursery?" she was able to take her daughter out of nursery on Thursday which saved her about £180 childcare costs a month. I did it for a full year and as an amazing result, the girls are best friends and now so are we. And I've inherited a second 'daughter' whom I adore. I've never told her the reason I did it and never will.

Thats a really lovely thing to do Buggeredpelvicfloor2013

I do loads of things, I'm known for it. But I don't talk about it - that's bragging and like I'm only doing it to get praise. It defeats the point of doing stuff if you show off about it.

Babybearsporij Don't be a bonfire pisser onner!

@Babybearsporij

Totally agree. All this thread will end up with will be invented tales of Good. Halos will be polished, Mother Teresa will seem to be the devil incarnate in comparison.

Friend had had a rough time health wise and I knew she was cheering herself up with her fave tv show on loop.

I collected a load of the memorabilia from the show and left it on her doorstep one day.

cjt110 · 22/06/2018 09:30

AnneProtheroe Not neccessarily. It is for things you have done, and had done to/for you. Don't be such a misery

Singlebutmarried How cool. What show? You can't say that and not say what show!

I saw the foodbank van deliver to a neighbour so I sent an online delivery to their house. She wouldn't know it was me because we have never spoken and I told nobody but just didn't like to think that somebody so near was struggling to feed themselves and their children.

OddestSock · 22/06/2018 09:34

I’m going to sing my daughter’s praises here because she’s a lovely little soul. Her teacher was going through a hard time & had been upset in school one day. DD came home & asked if she could buy her some flowers & take them to school for her the next day to make her feel better. We did just that

cjt110 · 22/06/2018 09:35

Thats really kind of your DD OddestSock How old is she? Clearly has learnt kindness and compassion from you and her family.

My long term nail tech told me she had found out she has coeliacs (gluten intolerance) and knew nothing of where to get stuff, didn't have time to go shopping this week due to newborn etc. My sister has the disease too, so I knew I could get a load of stuff easy. So straight after my appointment I popped to Tesco - bought her essentials such as GF bread, pasta, biscuits etc and she cried she was so appreciative and I thought that was just lush.

OddestSock · 22/06/2018 09:39

Thank you :) she’s 7

We once bought a homeless man a breakfast box because it was hot food and the weather was freezing cold.
My DD always picks two items to put in the food bank box while we are shopping off her and my DS. She learnt about the food banks through the schools political awareness campaign. (Encouraging kids to vote, political parties and policies). She keeps saying she will be PM one day and her party will fix things. (Homelessness and poverty being the biggest problems to her)

CadleCrap · 22/06/2018 09:47

Not me, but I recently saw someone pay for someone else’s shopping.

It actually made most of us by the tills shed a tear, as it was obviously a Mum with young kids ( nappies in shopping) down on their luck. The poor Mum was in tears refusing help, the stranger was saying, its no problem we’ve all been there.

In the end the checkout assistant just took control and accepted the strangers card.Once the grateful poor mum had left, we all cheered the generous payer. There were hugs and everything.

Polishitbehindthedoor · 22/06/2018 09:47

Each time I do a big shop at Tesco I always buy 5 items for the food bank basket. At Christmas I filled two bags of nice branded luxury items for the food bank. I'm not wealthy, but I've had to use food banks a couple of times and they're an absolute lifeline for a lot of families.

I once paid for someone's parking as she only had a £10 note, but I didn't have £10 worth of change on me and neither did anyone else she frantically approached. The traffic warden was circling her like a bloody vulture so I gave her all the change I had which covered parking for 3 hrs. The look on that traffic wardens face was priceless though.

In the receiving end I ended a DV relationship but my ex continued to harass me and kept letting himself into my home without permission as he refused to hand his keys back to me. I'd just suffered a miscarriage and I was on my arse financially. I couldn't afford to replace locks, the police were useless and I was at rock bottom. But my lovely sweet next door neighbour arranged and paid for a locksmith to change my locks, she set her cctv up to watch my house to capture ex harassing me and she bought me 4 bags of food and toiletries.

She's died now Sad Salt of the earth she was.

Nice one @Buggeredpelvicfloor2013. I’m no ministering angel, but at a Girls Aloud concert I heard a mum very quietly tell her daughter that she couldn’t stretch to a tour t shirt. The girl looked v disappointed, but was v gracious, and the mum looked ashamed, which killed me. So I bought it for her. I think it was about fifteen or twenty quid, and I wasn’t badly off at the time. I told mum that I well knew what it was to be broke, and it would please me if she accepted it. And she belted me in the chops. Ha! Not really. She was very grateful. Seemed like a nice family.

KittyHawke80 · 22/06/2018 09:52

@Polishitbehindthedoor - that’s brought a lump to my throat. What a great lady.

WitchMoon · 22/06/2018 09:53

polishitbehindthedoor what a lovely neighbour!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 22/06/2018 09:53

I'm not religious but I go along with Christianity on this. Telling the world about your good deeds is bad form and pretty much eradicates any good karma coming your way. Do good by stealth.

WitchMoon · 22/06/2018 09:54

I don't like the FB videos of people "doing good deeds" as it mostly just for attention.

cjt110 · 22/06/2018 09:55

Prawnofthepatriarchy Not my intention of the thread at all - that's clear if you read the OP. If you don't wish to add to it, then dont. But don't be a misery.

Have reported the thread seeing as people have taken objection to it. How miserable.
