School believe DS has speech problem

DS is 6 and school have mentioned on several occasions he may have a speech problem or impediment of some sort and have referred him to a speech therapist. I'm not exactly sure why, okay he can't pronounce certain sounds very well such as "Th" or "r" or "y" or some times "st". But this is becoming less of a problem with age and other than that he speaks really clearly. I thought maybe I wasn't what they were hearing because I'm so used to his voice but no one seems to have a problem understanding him. Should i take him to a speech therapist and see what they think?

I would. That is a lot of sounds not to be able to pronounce very well at six.

Yes, keep the appointment. I'm a speech and language therapist. PM me if you need to

Always better to get these things checked than ignore and if there is a problem him go unsupported.

Keep the appointment.

I work in a primary school and find that many parents become totally used to their children’s speech issues and are unaware that there may be a problem, or alternatively see them as ‘cute’. It’s definitely worth getting that professional opinion.

Yes please do. DS was referred. We had just got used to his speech and understood him so was 'blind' (deaf) to his problem

That's good of the school to sort out a slt. No harm whatsoever in keeping the appointment, either there's nothing wrong, great, or he needs help and you've got it, great.

Definately keep the appointment. speech therapy normally has such a long waiting list. My son goes to a speech and language unit and i can understand all he says, you quite often get used to it

Keep the appointment. My brother had this at school. My mum refused to see it/ accept it and now he's an adult he has awful diction, it takes a lot to understand him.
