To believe that non stick pans don’t exist!

I’ve bought my fair share of pans of the years - spent a little, spent a lot... never truly non stick! I tried a Jamie Oliver recipe yesterday in my new lovely new “non stick” yep everything stuck to the bottom within minutes. So aibu to ask - is it all a con! Am I missing something? Does anyone know of one that really is “non stick”

I don't use non-stick pans, just stainless steel ones, but never seem to have an issue with things sticking! I do use some form of fat though, if frying. Also you may know this, but if you're browning meat it will stick even in a non-stick pan if you try to turn it over too quickly.

MyKingdomForACaramel · 21/06/2018 21:38

@peanutbutter hahah oh I would love to see the pan after attempting an egg with no oil!

Really interested in the turning too quickly - I’m a fairly decent cook, but am wondering if I’m too hasty in turning meat now!

And oddly now feel that the phrase “hasty in turning mean” sounds like a strange euphemism

Buy these! I think a pp has mentioned them already. My mam gave me them. Although there are a bit 'too' none stick cos when you start a stir things they sometimes fall out the edge of the pan Grin

They are blue salter pans. The marble ones. I love them 😍

mirime · 21/06/2018 21:56

We have circulon and they're really good, they're about 20 years old now and all fine except the frying pan because DH used to insist on using metal implements.

magoria · 21/06/2018 21:57

I have just returned my circulon pans after a few years as all the non stick started peeling off in the food. Something to do with having the pans too hot. They do have a good guarantee though so you may want to try them.

Back to Stellar which I had for 20 years before.

KarinVogel · 21/06/2018 22:05

Ive got a salter marble pan that is still non stick after a year of almost daily use. I like fried eggs and never use oil in the pan so non stick is essential.
I also have a small pan from the Hairy Bikers range. Its also still no stick after a couple of months with no indication its non stick is wearing off.

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/06/2018 22:16

Buy Circulons bit by bit when on sale. Look after them well and they last forbyears. Imneverbuse detergent/washing up liquid, as I say, I justnrinse immediately after use and dry straight away.

Becausevthey havevtiny, tiny grooves in the bases, you can occasionally get a bit of build up in the grooves. Just soak in a bit of vinegar, then rinse. Good as new.

I also have some Judge stainless steel sauce pans. I rinse and then wash by hand immediately after use (I do use washing up liquid for them). Vinegar is also great to bring them up like new.

Sooy about typos Blush

FlaviaAlbia · 21/06/2018 22:25

I've given up on non stick- no matter what quality of pan I got, food stuck, I prefer my stainless steel pots and pans.
I use non stick baking paper for biscuits and meringues but greasing works for everything else.
Plus they're so much easier to wash.

CheshireChat · 21/06/2018 22:26

The Hairy Bikers roasting tray I got was absolutely rubbish unfortunately.

I just buy the IKEA frying pans or the really cheap ones from Home Bargains (£5/ 3 or something like that). They don't last very long, but you can definitely fry an egg without oil in them.

Thought ceramic coated ones were supposed to be good as well.

Stephisaur · 21/06/2018 22:29

We have brilliant ones that we got from John Lewis. The brand is eaziglide and they genuinely work.

I can do scrambled egg in them and everything. Best purchase ever.

MyKingdomForACaramel · 21/06/2018 22:44

Thanks mumsnet- have just ordered the marble salter pan (£11.95 on groupon!!)

To be fair if it lasts a year, at that price I’ll be happy!!

I first read the title as non-stick pants Grin

DuchyDuke · 22/06/2018 06:35

Tefal and Prestige are the best non-stick brands here in my experience. Also, if you are near an Indian cash and carry, then explore - a lot of Indian made non-stick pans are meant to last a lifetime.

AgentJohnson · 22/06/2018 06:42

Not all non stick pans are built the same but it’s most probably cooking at the wrong temperature and turning things too quickly that results in sticking. Non stick pans are not designed for very high heat

longwayoff · 22/06/2018 06:43

Make sure your pan is hot before you put meat in to release the fat. If you think maybe not enough fat on the meat, oil the meat before you cook it.

TwoGinScentedTears · 22/06/2018 06:53

I've read before that you need to have specific pans for specific things. So one frying pan only for eggs. One for onions, one for meat.

Not very realistic though.

Mrsramsayscat · 22/06/2018 09:20

I have the John Lewis classic ones and they're great. 4 years now.

disahsterdahling · 22/06/2018 10:40

I am not sure the non stick survives dishwashers very well.

I recently bought a new set of non stick pans and they said that you could put them in the dishwasher, but the non stick would last longer if you didn't. Because they are non stick they are easier to wash, so it's not too much of a hardship.
