Sister is an almost 30 yr old drama llama. Called this morning and woke me up barely able to breathe as she was sobbing so much. Eventually found out someone has broke the lock on her car and rifled through her car. Said not to worry ring 101 and log it and call insurance company, really not much else you can do.
2 hours later called in to check how things were going, my mother has gone to see her and they are both very impressed with themselves as they've decided she can profit from this by telling insurance comp that loads of stuff was in the car and got robbed.
Cue me saying what a fucking idiotic plan, they will want pictures/receipts etc and at the first sign of fraud she will have no insurance. The phone was promptly hung up.
So AIBU, is this what people do if faced with claiming on insurance- genuine question?

YANBU - this is very common and is the reason why

  1. insurance is so expensive and
  2. insurers don't pay out claims

which is why I never purchase any insurance whatsoever (unless a legal requirement)

obviousNC101 · 21/06/2018 10:03

This is insurance fraud and its a criminal offence. Tell her that and then cut contact before you are accused of being complicit...

cricketmum84 · 21/06/2018 10:06

I'm probs a bit naive but I would like to think that 90% of us wouldn't even dream of this!
I would say leave the phone, don't speak to them about it again, just leave them to it. I'm pretty sure that unless they can provide proof of purchase whether a receipt, photo of item or original packaging then insurance probably won't pay out anyway.
Unfortunately there are just some people out there who are out for what they can get!!

FesteringCarbuncle · 21/06/2018 10:10

My friends car was stolen and my TV was in the boot
Long story as to why it was there but it genuinely was. The police were very disbelieving and said you wouldn't believe what people claim was in the car when it was stolen
She couldn't have claimed, it wasn't covered. There is only cover for certain things such as sound system and only to a certain amount. You have to pay more for expensive equipment
My friends car was found and my TV was still there so a happy ending for us

dentydown · 21/06/2018 10:14

Insurance will see through it. At a place I used to work, one of the cars got broken into. The owners tried to claim for a non existent laptop, jewellery, expensive jackets etc. The insurance clerk got wise to this and asked to see pictures of them in the jackets, receipts for things and then asked them outright why they were storing high value items in their glove box.

AfterSchoolWorry · 21/06/2018 10:18

Let them at it! Gobshites will hang themselves.

AJPTaylor · 21/06/2018 10:23

most car policies only cover 250 anyway. for this reason.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 21/06/2018 10:29

FesteringCarbuncle - don't suppose the police every apologised for not believing you, did they?

Xenia · 21/06/2018 10:31

Also some insurance helplines have software which can tell by your voice if you are lying. My local council even uses it.

Also why do something plain wrong? It will play on their conscience.

RideOn · 21/06/2018 10:34

I also maybe a bit naive and can't imagine most people I know even considering it, it is just a different way of stealing.

It is a fucking idiotic plan. YANBU.

onalongsabbatical · 21/06/2018 10:34

Goodness, how do you put up with them?

fairislecable · 21/06/2018 10:40

Someone I knew had washing stolen from the line in the garden, by the time the list was embellished for claiming on on insurance. It included lined curtains leather jacket etc.

The police said it would be easy to spot the thief “ he would be the one with a double hernia” !

Knittedfairies · 21/06/2018 10:40

And what are they going to claim was in the car, and why was it there? They must think the insurers are idiots! Sit back and watch it implode OP.

Maelstrop · 21/06/2018 10:47

Do they really think this is a good idea? Unlikely it will be paid out if they claim laptop was in view etc. What a pair of idiots!

thecatsthecats · 21/06/2018 10:47

Ugh.

I was leaving for work when another car clipped my wing mirror - his fault, but it was only smashed glass and getting a replacement stick on mirror was LITERALLY a fiver. The brilliant bit was I had badly scraped the same side of my car recently (my fault), and when he got out of his car to apologise, he looked horrified at the level of damage, before I laughed and said that was already there.

Told this story at work, and one of my colleagues (a practicing Catholic Hmm) said that I should get the whole lot done on the other guy's insurance! What a horrible thing to do.

Barmypastrami · 21/06/2018 10:50

The thing is, they like to claim it’s a victimless crime as they’re just mugging off the insurance company. But actually they’re stealing from all of us who have to pay more expensive premiums.

Jaxhog · 21/06/2018 10:56

It's fraud! And the rest of us will be paying for it with higher premiums.

MargaretCavendish · 21/06/2018 10:56

Yes, people do this. People also shoplift a lot more than most law-abiding people imagine. Obviously in neither case does the fact it's quite common make it ok!

Jaxhog · 21/06/2018 10:57

And they need to be careful as Insurance companies now use lie detectors on phone calls these days. They will get caught.

specialsubject · 21/06/2018 11:00

I suggest your sister doesn't plan to be a career criminal as she is going to be really crap at it.

she will be caught, the rest of the world wasn't born yesterday.

well done on over-riding the stupid genes!

ichifanny · 21/06/2018 11:00

Car insurance never covers for stuff left in cars especially high value items

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/06/2018 11:00

Did she leave her diamond tiara in the glove box again?

Leave them to it. It's the only way they'll learn.

QueenAravisOfArchenland · 21/06/2018 11:00

Do they think the insurers were born yesterday? What a "genius" plan, I'm sure the insurers won't be even slightly sceptical and won't ask for any proof. They are most definitely the first people to have thought of doing such a remarkably clever thing and thus the company will have no defences against them.

Leave them to it. They're idiots, they won't be told, and they'll hang themselves.

Butterflyrosebud · 21/06/2018 11:02

This is stupid. Insurance company is likely to find out, it will be on record if she does it again and her premium will go up anyway.

Larrythelamb84 · 21/06/2018 11:02

They must have some balls. My car was stolen and had DVD players in the back for the kids, car seats etc. My only solace was I had taken all the Christmas presents from the boot into the house at around midnight on the day it was stolen...everything apart from my daughters electric scooter as I couldnt find anywhere to hide it. So, that went with the car. Even though I had receipts for everything I was soooo nervous telling the insurance company I had a brand new electric scooter in the boot! In the end I did have to submit receipts for everything, so id be telling them to be very careful as they can end up with fraud on their record.
