To hate summer?

I probably am but most of the time I find myself counting the days down to autumn! I live in Central Europe and while our place is a cosy, snowy wonderland in winter, it's always too hot for me in summer.

Added to my dislike of the heat, I am fair and burn easily, so am in a constant cycle of applying and removing suncreams and self-tanners. I'm allergic to mosquito bites (carry an epi-pen) and take anti-histamines daily, which damp down the worst of the immune response, but the bite sites still swell horribly. I feel like I'm in a constant battle not to look like a sunburned, inflated, dead hippo!

I get irritable and short-tempered in the hot weather too, and can't help wondering why everyone else looks like they're having a great time! It doesn't help that DH is from the Med (south of France), loves it hot and is perpetually bronzed after half an hour of sun exposure! Makes me free like I'm definitely BU!

So, any tips on how I can make summer more enjoyable please?

Too hot for me too, the U.K. prediction is 27 this weekend, not horrific, but I just sweat and drip and I hate it. Dampen any clothes, spray your face with a water misting bottle, keep very hydrated.

To hate summer?

I was prepared to say YABU but your particular situation sounds pretty unbearable!

I LOVE summer and the soaring temperatures. We have 28 predicted all week - bring it on!

SnuggyBuggy · 21/06/2018 07:23

I find I avoid going out when it's really hot and plan outings for autumn so I have something to look forward to. I'd just take it easy

Kathulu · 21/06/2018 07:25

I hate summer, from the light nights, heat, insects, (especially wasps,) and my god the hay fever! Summer depresses me. I always look forward to Autumn when I feel more like myself.

Thankfully as it's summer solstice today I look forward to the nights drawing in again Grin

Hobbitbobbit · 21/06/2018 07:25

YANBU and I am the same. Constant battle against sunburn and sweat and frizzy hair is no fun.

KlutzyDraconequus · 21/06/2018 07:32

The weather and warmth is fine.
I don't like other people's attitudes to it though. The loud garden bbqs, the excuse to drink to excess, men with no shirt on, flip flops, constant stupid bass line of crappy music, etc

All annoyances that I'm supposed to ignore just because 'Its summer'

Well yes, summer happens every year, no need to act like you've never seen sunshine.

(I'm equally annoyed at all the Xmas bullshit we have to tolerate 'Cause it's Christmas' ... I'm a joyful sort...)

No I don’t enjoy summer as everyone else seems to. It’s too hot to sleep at night, but I can’t open the windows because pollen comes in. Walks get sweaty and uncomfortable, and sun cream is just clammy and nasty!

This year I have a six month old and that’s added in a whole new layer of complexity- getting the room dark and cool enough to sleep, staying in the shade with the baby so she doesn’t burn. Plus I breastfeed and have a very limited nursing wardrobe so summer dresses are out. I go to bed at 8pm to deal with the night wakings in broad sunlight.

I love summer rain and storms though, fingers crossed for a good storm after this dry patch.

I actually enjoyed the snow days more earlier in the year!

Thought I was the only one...

LegoBitcho · 21/06/2018 07:42

Love hot days (and nights under a fan) but I hate the ridiculously long days.

wanderings · 21/06/2018 07:49

Did the really harsh and prolonged winter never happen? We need and deserve a good summer!

Well yes, summer happens every year
Does it? I think I missed it last year. It was hot for three weeks in June, which was no use to teenagers stuck in exam halls, and their teachers. July and August last year were cold, wet and rubbish.

wolfywynnie · 21/06/2018 07:51

It actually depresses me, it's the most awful time of year for me. I have Polymorphic light eruption so unless I'm covered in factor 50 or higher, I end up covered in tiny spots all over me, it's literally an allergy to the sun. Plus I'm fair skinned too Sad and seem to suffer with constant heatstroke in the Summer.

I can't wait for Autumn, I feel amazing and alive kn the colder weather. Wish I could go to sleep now and wake up in September!

StopPOP · 21/06/2018 08:00

I'm certainly an indoorsy person and hate the idea/slight pressure that, because it's sunny, you HAVE to be outdoor doing something/going somewhere. DS is 11 now so not too bad as he can be out on his bike etc with his mates, suncream, money for lunch/drinks, be in for tea mode.

Roll on the days when it's dark, cold outside so I couldn't possibly "go out in that" Wink

DeltaG · 21/06/2018 08:30

Lolz @Brigante9 ! Hilarious spoof BBC page!

Glad to see I'm not alone. Last night it was 30C INSIDE our bedroom and difficult to sleep. And it was only 27C yesterday. Next week it's predicted to be 31/32C so I'm dreading it Sad

Even the kids (2 and 5 months, respectively) seem to handle it better than me!

Here are some things I'm doing to try and appreciate summer more;

  • making the most of the seasonal fruit & veg. Did an apricot trifle yesterday and rhubarb fool the day before
  • going for a run in the early morning to appreciate the outdoors before the day gets too hot
  • taking my morning coffee in the shade on the balcony when I'm at home (and turning it into a frappucino at the weekend)

I would also like to take an early morning dip in the lake before the crowds descend, but it seems you need to arrive just as dawn is breaking to actually achieve this Confused

Any other things people are doing?

@wolfywynnie

That sounds awful! Suncream is horrible, sticky and gloopy and makes you look all damp and sweaty. I really feel for you.

People are different.
If I had power over the weather I'd have summer all year round. I loathe winter and find autumn depressing.

Storm4star · 21/06/2018 08:38

Summer SAD is actually a thing. Not many people know about it or understand it because everyone’s expected to love summer. I don’t. It took years for me to realise that always at the beginning of summer I was at the doctors with varying symptoms of stress/depression. When it’s hot I stay indoors as much as possible.

Two things really helped me with sleep. One is getting heavy curtains in my living room. So around 7:30 I shut the curtains and put a lamp on. Sounds weird I know when it’s light outside! But it really works. Something to do with melatonin production. Secondly I have a portable air con in my bedroom and stick it on for an hour before bed to get the room cool. It also has a timer so I let it run for a couple of hours while i’m Sleeping. If you can get a good nights sleep you will feel a lot less irritable and miserable.

People who love hot weather always say we have no summer because that’s how it seems to them. When you suffer in the heat you’re hyper aware of every hot day!

FizzyWizzyFlash · 21/06/2018 08:49

I hate summer too.

I hate everything about it.

I love winter, it's dark and cold and refreshing.
