urgent query re chicken pox

anyone a doctor?

My husband has just been to someone's house to pick up a fish tank from them and they informed him that their child (in the room with them) had chicken pox.

Aside from being very annoyed that there was no heads up, i'm wondering whether it's safe for him to come into contact with our 6mo DD? He has had chicken pox before. Can you be a carrier if immune?

Please help! he's back home in about 10 mins!!

More chance catching it in Tesco

TheFirstMrsDV · 20/06/2018 21:34

You can't carry it.
You can only infect someone else if you are infectious.

I am willing to be corrected by a doctor or other scientist.

PiggyPoos · 20/06/2018 21:35

I think you are right MrsDV.

PotteringAlong · 20/06/2018 21:36

Yes, it’s fine.

Pressuredrip · 20/06/2018 21:37

chicken pox virus can live on surfaces for a few hours I believe. He won't be able to carry it but I'd wipe the fish tank over befoew bringing it in if she is still awake.

guiltynetter · 20/06/2018 21:39

sorry but the ‘more chance catching it in tesco’ made me giggle 😂

as others said, if your husband has had it, he’s more than likely immune, so he can’t carry it to your child.

Hi
Depends on whether the blisters have scanned over if the child is still infectious. If your husband has had chicken pox he can’t get it again. However see advice below from www.nhsinform.scot/illnesses-and-conditions/infections-and-poisoning/chickenpox#preventing-the-spread-of-chickenpox

Stop the virus spreading
Chickenpox can sometimes be spread through contact with objects that have been contaminated with the virus, such as children's toys, bedding or clothing.

If someone in your household has chickenpox, you can help stop the virus spreading by wiping any objects or surfaces with a sterilising solution and making sure that any infected clothing or bedding is washed regularly.

Aside.... if you have had C/P before it doesn't make you immune! That's an old wives tale- less susceptible yes, not immune.

TheFirstMrsDV · 20/06/2018 22:20

I don't think that is strictly true theSun
Having CP can make you immune but it won't always.
Which is why pregnant women used to have their immunity checked.

Chemotherapy can wipe out your immunity which is why people with cancer are put at risk by people with infectious CP.
