To think job titles have become very complicated

I was watching an old episode of a quiz from the 1980s and when the contestants were asked what they did for a living I understood immediately what their jobs were: an electrician, a librarian, a nurse and an chef.

Nowadays, on programmes like Location or Eggheads I haven't a clue half the time what the participants do: 'A customer service analyst', 'a retail designer', 'a systems co-ordinator'.

Nope. No idea. What do you actually do?

AIBU to wish we could do away with these silly job titles?

I received a phone call from 'The controller of the navigation hub, orthopaedic referrals' the other day. She was so condescending, snippy and rude when I couldn't put her through to the person she wanted, on account of him not actually being there, that as I took the phone message I made her repeat her he job title. Grin
I can only conclude that she would be among that strata of NHS management administration that i always see clopping around the corridors officiously in a power bodycon dress.
I've decided that my new job title is 'Commander of the reception desk' Hmm

Got into by accident, had worked in cancer research labs.

Stopped to have ds1 and then got interviewed for the data manager job in NHS.
Still in cancer but the other end of the cancer research familyGrin

Sounds suspiciously like she sits at the reception desk of the orthopaedics dept.

I’m a Front of House Supervisor.

Which I think sounds quite fancy when all I do is look after a pub and sometimes boss the waitresses around.

Thought of this thread yesterday whilst at a conference where the recently created role of ‘Cognitive Engineer’ was discussed at length...makes complete sense to anybody in the industry, but probably very nonsensical to anyone who didn’t know.

It’s essentially a very specific form of programming and compete engineering related to the development of AI.
