To ask for your suggestions on a christening gift

I was thinking of the My Life Story 100 year diary and a small 'proper' christening gift but I've no idea what.

The immediate family will probably give a bible, silver bracelet, cross pendant, christening cup etc so I'm a bit stuck.

I saw on a thread the other day that someone said give consumables as gifts so things don't clutter up houses, but I thought a christening gift should be a keepsake?

The Godparents of one of our sons bought him a bottle of port to be opened on his 18th birthday. So that’s what we did - and it was delicious! You have to make sure it’s a bottle that can be laid down for that period.

I bought a lovely box set of the Narnia books for my godson. I bought a lovely, and not terribly expensive, dolls tea set for a friend's daughter. It was special enough but could also be played with.

I was looking at the ladybird classic box sets but they have changed the pictures/branding and I really don't like them now. I'd want ones that look like the originals.

I can't even see any nice sets of older books. When I was little we had a set of really nice leather bound, gold embossed books that had the wind in the willows, what Katy did etc. Something like that would be nice.

I love that port idea, I may pinch that for a future gift!

OP, try out the "Knickerbocker Classics" range on Amazon. Lovely hardbacked classics that look beautifully presented.

A birth certificate "holder" a bit like a tube with a lid on... But nicer? Maybe engrave with dob and name?

My go to christening gift is always a teramundi ceramic money box, lots of colours & designs to choose from & you can have the name wrote on the front. Parents can save £2 coins in them & when full it holds almost £1000 worth. Bought around 5 as christening gifts and parents are always delighted with them

I love this, it’s on my list to get my friends little boy for his first birthday.

I like the mug or the personalised nursery rhymes. I’m not keen on the musical box (that would just gather dust in my house) and I don’t think the Roald Dahl box set is quite special enough. More of a Christmas/ birthday present.

I have given books in the past - a really beautiful child’s atlas and a book of flower fairies for a little girl with a flower name.

I know some will say its probably crass but I like savings bonds - starts a conversation when it matures and reminiscences of the day, the giver, the receiver as well as practical for education or other "adult" costs considered when they were just young.

I bought a personalised memory book for my friend's daughter which she collected messages in at the christening and then has filled with photos, tickets from special events and milestones she has met.

Eliza9917 · 20/06/2018 15:38

That sounds nice AndNoneForGretchenWieners

I love the peter rabbit collection! Definitely think you should go with that.
Although those mugs are lovejy they are very expensive for what they are.
I just checked out knickerbockers on amazon, that's to whoever recommended that, will definitely be getting some of those for future presents !
