Depression and Mumsnet

Or are quite a few people posting on here a bit depressed? I notice quite a lot of people discontent, blaming others such as their partner, brooding over things, decisions etc, quite a lot of all or nothing thinking, black and white thinking, and catastrophising.

Yabu to arm chair diagnose people you have never even met with mental health conditions.

Imo the Internet encourages depressive thinking. Doesn't mean we're all depressed.

LovelyBath77 · 18/06/2018 20:04

I wonder if it is contagious.

Online, I mean.

I think that mumsnet (and other online forums) give support when we need it. People are less likely to post when everything is hunky-dory as they have less need for support.

ShirleyPhallus · 18/06/2018 20:05

There does seem to be a higher proportion of those with mental health issues, parents of children with disabilities, those with marital issues etc etc

That’s just because those groups reach out for support - if all is well and you don’t need support you have no reason to ask for it

I think people suffering from these illnesses find forums like Mumsnet helpful in sharing their worries and feelings anonymously and without judgement.....just a thought.

LovelyBath77 · 18/06/2018 20:06

I guess also another thing is we share things maybe wouldn't in RL...

I think you misunderstand what depression is. Confused
It's not about being discontented or pissed off with your partner. It's an actual mental health issue. YABU

I do understand, I have it myself Confused

I found CBT helpful, and a lot of the ways of thinking mentioned are clear on MN.

Like draws together with like, so you find similar types in greater numbers congregating.

There seems to be a lot of fixating on sometimes quite small things, and yes I think it encourages ruminating. With me too. Quite addictive though.
