Fancy Dress Parties

AIBU to think these are shit?

I've got to attend one at the end of this month. It's for a family members significant birthday so is unavoidable. They are obsessed with fancy dress and always ensure any celebration is fancy dress themed.

Honestly I can't bear it. It's just cringey and undignified. It's not an age thing, I never liked it in my 20s and I'm in my 40s now. I like parties, I drink, I dance.

But fancy dress frankly can fuck off.

It's not even abput dressing up. I'd be happy to go to a party in jeans and trainers. Just not a bloody chicken shit, frightwig, psychedelic print or what have you. Ugh.

So literally just turn up in whatever you are already wearing and make something up when asked. FD is bad enough but that is an incredibly shit theme. If it was at least tudors or something fun like that it might be tollerable.

expatinscotland · 19/06/2018 13:56

I agree, it's shit. Hate it. Go in work clothes and say you're a BBC presenter.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 19/06/2018 14:39

I hate them with a passion and if I absolutely have to go to one I do what mammy said. Seventies theme? Green eyeshadow and a maxi dress, TV theme - pick any plainclothes detective and get a police badge in a wallet. Job done Grin

Izzabellasasperella · 19/06/2018 14:57

I love fancy dress. Any excuse to dress up😀 My favourite is Halloween I can spend weeks making a costume.
If you really hate it though I think it's quite easy to wear something simple for that theme. Sounds to me like the party may be a bit crap not the fancy dress bit!😀

Sparkly outfit and fake tan - Strictly Come Dancing.

Smart outfit, hair on end - Desperate Housewives.

Clothing with assorted toy animals attached to it - Life on Earth.

Blue clothing with fish attached to it - Blue Planet.

Wear anything, carry mixing bowl and whisk - Bake Off.

LagunaBubbles · 19/06/2018 15:18

Love fancy dress parties. My DH had one a few years for his 40th with a Disney/film characters theme. Loved the effort everyone put in, it was a fab party all round.

FreshStartToday · 19/06/2018 15:23

Foslady was going to say almost the same thing.

Don't go but say you were there as the Invisible Man!

Primark always have film/tv tshirt s, just pick up one you like and wear with jeans, that's enough if you don't fancy proper dressing up.

Bennietheball · 21/06/2018 18:32

Still can't work out what to wear.

I am almost hoping to get food poisoning or similar in the interim so we don't have to go.

I hate fancy dress with a passion and generally refuse to dress up. Seriously no one really cares. I went to one a while ago and someone was wearing jeans and a baggy tee shirt printed with 'This is my costume, get over it'. Definitely going to get one printed next time I'm invited to a fd party.

itswinetime · 21/06/2018 19:18

Normal clothes with an apron for bake off (this would probably be my choice.)

Smart suit-news reader

Normal clothes- anyone from any reality show ever.

Keep it low key that's my motto for fancy dress!

Notso · 21/06/2018 19:28

In theory I like them in practice I hate them.
PIL love them, they always want the kids to join in. We have 4 kids, the last party we spent over £200 on costumes!

YoucancallmeVal · 21/06/2018 19:32

Depending on your tv viewing age, comedy matching jumpers as Howard and hilda from ever decreasing circles or ohhh who were the swing your pants people?? Simon and something??

mrsfredweasley · 21/06/2018 19:33

I just had a fancy dress themed party for my 30th 😂 it was so much fun. I loved doing the decorations and themed food. Some people went full on dresses up, some people didn't dress up at all, it was all fine. It was just a birthday party 🤷🏼‍♀️

FreshStartToday · 22/06/2018 17:03

Apron as a bake of contestant is genius. You could even splash out and have a bowl and wooden spoon!

Almondio · 22/06/2018 17:13

I flippin hate fancy dress! I've been invited to a wedding (not very close friends) before now where a specific themed fancy dress was the strong expectation for guests. I can't imagine anything worse, so I declined and didn't go.

Fair enough if the B&G want to wear costumes in line with their hobby/passion but for the love of God don't expect guests to play. Bloody ridiculous notion!

Bennietheball · 22/06/2018 22:08

Can't imagine anything worse than a fancy dress wedding.

We've decided we really can't face it so are not going. Not going is a bit awkward but still probably less awkward than going and feeling uncomfortable all evening!

Wear your normal clothes, put a name badge on and say you're contestants on Pointless.

nocoolnamesleft · 22/06/2018 23:22

Wear your normal clothes, and a badge saying "Reality TV"

TarragonChicken · 22/06/2018 23:40

Usually don't mind fancy dress (I get a bit carried away with it) but I have a school uniform fancy dress party coming up. That's just pissing me off Angry

BackforGood · 23/06/2018 00:00

Can't stand fancy dress, but this theme does give you options - loads already suggested - where you can just go in your own clothes.
Really depends if you want to go or not.

Bennietheball · 23/06/2018 07:14

Knowing the people who are going, we would stand out like a sore thumb in our own clothes and end up the butt of jokes or stared at all night. We really can live without that. So we're not going.

OP posts:
DarklyDreamingDexter · 23/06/2018 07:25

I absolutely love fancy dress parties! They are usually such fun (to me) but realise they are not everyone's cup of tea. You are right about standing out like a sore thumb in your ordinary clothes. I don't know why people even bother to attend fancy dress parties if they don't want to dress up - it's a party invitation not a court summons! You are better off not going, as you said.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 23/06/2018 08:00

I like the Wednesday Addams approach. When asked why she wasn't in fancy dress, she replied, "I'm a psychopath. We look just like everyone else."
