Omg.Have driven all day up from the south of France to Caen to catch 11pm ferry to Portsmouth.Couldn't get a cabin so have got a reclining seat which doesn't.....so uncomfy, trying to sleep in a roomful of 50 people burping drinking snoring and farting. Also a party of 50 excited school kids next door screaming and runnning around.
There's free whisky tasting in the bar and i hate whisky but at this rate.
Is anyone still up to keep me sane.Got another 300 miles to drive tomorrow too 😕☺

Is this your vacation? Sounds horrible.

TakeawayTakeMeAway · 17/06/2018 23:21

I suppose you can’t sleep in the car? I don’t know how it works on the big ferries.

Clarich007 · 17/06/2018 23:22

Hi confusedWife aha it is.It's been a fab holiday. We had a cabin on the way over , it was brilliant but because of Le Mans 24 hour race it was fully booked on the way back.Never again!!

A woman and her husband interrupted their vacation to go to the dentist. "I want a tooth pulled, and I don't want Novacaine because I'm in a big hurry," the woman said. "Just extract the tooth as quickly as possible, and we'll be on our way." The dentist was quite impressed. "You're certainly a courageous woman," he said. "Which tooth is it?" The woman turned to her husband and said, "Show him your tooth, dear."

No, takeaway you're not allowed onto the car decks Never mind, OP, you'll soon be home. Don't know why it's so bad. I've never had that problem. Maybe try to book early next time

ConfusedWife1234 · 17/06/2018 23:24

Lol, Gotto.

Clarich007 · 17/06/2018 23:26

Don’t do the whiskey tasting, you’re on a ferry ffs! You’ll only puke🤢
Get yourself to the bar and get a decent drink!
Tbh it sounds like hell on earth! Good luck!

Myotherusernameisbest · 17/06/2018 23:26

Most ferries I have used on that route have a 'quiet room'. Where lights are dimmed and people have to be quiet basically! I'd check if yours does, you might have missed it and are in the main seating bit if it's noisy.

Clarich007 · 17/06/2018 23:27

Haha GotoKondo
Than made me giggle thank you

I wouldn't want to do a long drive on no sleep. Could you go to a cheap hotel once you dock, get some rest, then drive home?

Clarich007 · 17/06/2018 23:35

Thanks Puffycat
No whisky....a cuppa it is

lardymclardy · 17/06/2018 23:44

I've been on that ferry - You'll fall into a fitful sleep 30 minutes before docking. The snoring, farting, waking passengers will marvel at your ability to sleep.

Eye mask? Ear plugs? Blanket over the head?!

I've journeyed 15 hours through France before and became such an angry child - you have my sympathies.

Heratnumber7 · 17/06/2018 23:46

I'd be tempted to join the backpackers in a quiet corner on the floor somewhere. Use a bag as a pillow. There's usually a good spot under a staircase.

DrDoMore · 17/06/2018 23:52

Sounds exactly like my experience on the Glasgow to London overnight sleeper train. One of the worst nights of my life. Had to give a massive presentation the next day as well. Got into Euston at 6am and had nowhere to go until the meeting started at half nine. Awful experience from start to finish.

WillowintheUK · 17/06/2018 23:55

Did that crossing a few years ago and, as we booked literally that day, also couldn't get a cabin on the way out. Fortunately our destination was only about an hour from the port.

You're right, the seats don't really recline very much do they? Hope the crossing doesn't seem too long.

nottinghillgrey · 18/06/2018 00:00

Please don't drive 300 miles without having slept properly.

twinkletwinklelittlerainbow · 18/06/2018 00:06

We used to do this as kids, in the morning go round all the chairs, put your hands down the back. You'd be surprised how much money falls out of people's pockets during their sleep...but yourself a nice brekky with your recliner compensation 😉

MercianQueen · 18/06/2018 00:15

I've done that crossing. I gave up on the recliner lounge and its farting, snoring inhabitants. Eventually found a harshly lit, hard plastic bench outside the shop and slept better than I ever would have done in that lounge. Never again will I attempt to "save" £40 by not booking a cabin...

Jasmina456 · 18/06/2018 00:58

We ended up doing that without a cabin once.

We'd been booked onto a different boat with a cabin, but the ferry was cancelled two days before due to very bad weather.

We had to hurriedly rebook onto the high speed ferry and there were no cabins.
Plus, due to the terrible weather, the boat was rocking from side to side like I'd never experienced before. And you couldn't go to the loo because they were full of little kids vomiting!

EndOfEternity · 18/06/2018 01:04

When I was younger used to take a beach towel out and just find a bit of floor in a lounge, coat over head, and go to sleep. Can you find anywhere to lie down?

Clarich007 · 18/06/2018 05:25

Oh thanks so much everybody, great advice and a few laughs too.
We survived ...just.Worst night ever, no sleep even though it did quieten down by 1am.Still it's been a very strange experience sharing a night with 50 strangers, and it stinks 😨😨

Clarich007 · 18/06/2018 05:37

Never ever again , without a cabin and a lovely premier inn booked, can't wait 😊

liz70 · 18/06/2018 09:35

Ohhh, that sounds rough! I hope you get a chance to catch up on your sleep very soon. Flowers

We're sailing from Portsmouth to Santander (and back at the end of our holiday, obviously) on the 24 hour cruise ferry at the end of the month. Needless to say we have cabins booked - 4 berth for DH, DD3 (8) and myself, 2 berth for DD2 and boyfriend. Really wouldn't want to do it with just a lounger to sleep on!
