AIBU to annihilate flies!?

It’s summer, and I know flies are part of summer, but we recently got chickens and there are rather more flies than usual in our garden. No matter how much I spray the poo away they are attracted by the most recent deposits from my girls. There were more in the house too.

First I got a fly executioner tennis racket thing and went all Samuel L. Jackson on their ass, zapping them with a loud satisfying cracking sound, but although satisfying it wasn’t making any difference. So I bought two fly traps and set them in the garden with the bait stuff in. Like two jars of attractant, where the flies can get in and not out, then slowly drown in the liquid.

My 9yo is really unhappy about this, and his dad is backing him up! I know it is great that our kids have empathy and compassion, and I’d like to think I have played a big part in that, but they’re flies, goddammit! I don’t like them buzzing around the house and I also don’t want to cause a fly problem for the neighbours either. But I am being made to feel like Cruella de Vil over this. I offered to wrap paper round the jars so he couldn’t see them drowning but apparently he would “still know.”

Am I being unreasonable here? The jars are working nicely and there are markedly fewer flies around, but I can’t deny it is a shitty death for the little buggers...

PS I have checked and the attractant won’t attract bees. I love bees. I save bees with sugar water. I plant bee-friendly plants. No bees will be harmed in the course of this fly trap experiment. I would not use anything that kills bees.

Kill them. My bin smelled worse than usual and it seems a fly has got in as it had loads of maggots. Blergh!!!! Bin was swiftly emptied and bleached them pressure washed. It is emptied daily so I dunno what they were eating but they are one of my biggest fears!

YANBU. Death to all flies, the disgusting fuckers.

ChilliBanana · 17/06/2018 21:45

They are pollinators the same as bees, so they do have a purpose.

Link to your jar devices please. I live next to a farm and I'm sick of chasing them around the kitchen with a swatter, having to cover everything. Not even been able to lay the table because of them landing on cutlery etc. Horrible things.

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 17/06/2018 21:52

Same as thenightsky, I live next to a farm and they are rampant. Any ideas welcomed!

Two of these. The daddy of fly traps. Expensive, I know. One by the chicken run and one a few metres from the back door. It does stink a bit so best not to have them where you sit or walk around. They can draw flies from 10 metres away. https://www.amazon.co.uk/STARBAR-272478-Captivator-Fly-Trap/dp/B000BQSF6E/ref=mpssa111?ie=UTF8&qid=1529268858&sr=8-1-spons&pi=ACSX2366SY340QL65&keywords=captivator+fly+trap&psc=1

Find a video online about how flies eat shit them sit on your food, vomit up the contents of their stomach onto it and then eat it. He probably won’t want dog shot on his food, no matter how empathic he is.
And tell your dh he needs to become vegan before sticking up for the rights of flies.

Last summer when I was pregnant I was plagued with flies in the house and it completely disgusted me. I bought an insectocuter from Nisbetts the catering shop and it's been fantastic. It was only about £20 as well 👍

I don't like killing anything. I try and shoo flies out the window. I really hate seeing those sticky fly strips with the flies stuck struggling to free themselves. Its cruel Sad

Yep I show no mercy to flies. Disgusting creatures.
