AIBU actually?

Doing redecoration in the recently built house, and had no idea such thing exists so didn't pay attention before.

And now being told that the shower in the ensuite bathroom is electric Confused

Just like why would you install that in 2010 built house with exceptional water pressure, and powerful boiler that provides boiling-hot water.the other bathroom has normal shower with hot water from boiler. Just like why??

I think it is quite basic model for £50 or something (Google suggests this). Would not expect it to be powerful but will check it tomorrow. I haven't tried it yet. Blush

If there is a hot water pipe there, we might get rid of it or install a better model. My main concern is if there is a hot water supply in this bathroom. I'm a bit paranoid probably. Grin

The only electric showers I've used have been shocking, terrible pressure and variable temperature, took an age to rinse my hair properly. Would never get one. We have a combi boiler which is serviced regularly with a great cover plan.

We have an electric shower in our bathroom because the wall can't take a boiler supplied shower. Might be the same?

Viviot · 17/06/2018 20:56

We do not have water tank by the way.

Never had anything but an electric shower!
Just replaced old one which was fab and its 15+years old before it started to pack in. Really powerful with different settings and wasnt even an expensive one.

And as our boiler was playing up last year and had to be replaced it was a godsend.

SweetSummerchild · 17/06/2018 21:00

^this

I would never have an electric shower. It’s power shower or death in our house.

As far as boilers breaking down.... isn’t that what immersion heaters are for?

0lapislazuli · 17/06/2018 21:00

They use a lot less water and not much electricity. They provide a constant temperature, whereas boilers sometimes go hot and colder, especially if someone else runs the hot tap (well, our does anyway!)

donajimena · 17/06/2018 21:02

I've had a boiler conk out on several occasions. Electric shower is a godsend. I lived in a house without one and when the boiler broke washing my bits in a bucket was no fun I can tell you..

happymummy12345 · 17/06/2018 21:04

I miss our electric shower big time.

dangermouseisace · 17/06/2018 21:05

I had one that ran off a good combi boiler, and have an electric one in my current house. The electric one is much better for temperature consistency and control. The combi boiler one would be great...then a bit of cold...then great again. And god forbid anyone decided to run a sink of water downstairs whilst someone is in the shower! Electric all the way!

happymummy12345 · 17/06/2018 21:08

We had one in our old house that was quite good. I love that you leave it at the right temp, press a button and that's it. We had to move and our new house just has a shower off the taps. I hate it.
M&FIL have a brilliant electric shower (I've used it the few times we've stayed there in the past). I so wish I could go there even say once a month to have a proper decent shower (I'd pay towards the water of course. And obviously shower here every day, I don't just mean have only one shower a month).

Loonoon · 17/06/2018 21:09

Our holiday home has 4 showers. 2 run off the hot water tank and 2 are electric and just heat the water they use as it passes through. If we have a houseful of people it is convenient to have all 4 working but if we are there on our own we don’t bother heating a whole tank of hot water but just use the electric showers. They have built in pumps so the water pressure is better than the showers fed from the hot water tank.

FreeButtonBee · 17/06/2018 21:09

I have never had a good shower in an electric shower. And in my almost 40 years, have had boiler issues for 10 days in total so the ‘boiler conking ot’ thing is madness to me.

That said, that’s obviously an electric shower. You need to join me in flushing loos/running taps/baths/showers when you loom at houses. I turn off and on light switches/ look for boiler controls and thermostats etc etc. This stuff drives you bonkers when you live there so worth checking out

SimonBridges · 17/06/2018 21:11

Have you honestly made it all the way to adulthood without ever having come across an electric shower before?

somewhereovertherain · 17/06/2018 21:13

Our electric shower is as powerful as our power show. It’s an expensive one and high electric use 11kw power shower.

busybarbara · 17/06/2018 21:15

We have our electric shower running off the hot water supply for the best of both worlds, works if the boiler is off but no problem pressure wise either.

SallyGardens · 17/06/2018 21:16

We have an electric shower that's fed from the hot tank - it's only the pump that's powered by electricity but it looks indistinguishable from a fully electric shower.

bbcessex · 17/06/2018 21:17

EIectric showers can be FANTASTIC

We’ve got one bathroom with electric & one with direct from central heating. Both are great - was very glad of electric when boiler broke.

You sound showerist, OP!

MereDintofPandiculation · 17/06/2018 21:25

Electric shower avoids the long heat-losing pipe run from the boiler.

And there are times when a hot water tank makes sense - eg hot water tank in bathroom when boiler is two floors down in basement.
