I’ve name changed as this might be outing and I don’t want it linked to my other posts.

I saw a job ad on Facebook that specifically asked for under 16 year olds, the pay was £4 per hour rising to £4.50 after 4 weeks “training” so I commented on it asking why only 14-16 year olds could apply and I got loads of replies saying along the lines of some kids don’t know how lucky they are, £4 is a good wage etc.

IABU to not believe that some people think like this, it’s obvious the company only want kids so they don’t have to pay them much and can keep more profit for themselves and that just because you didn’t earn much when you were young doesn’t mean kids shouldn’t be paid the minimum wage?

These laws basically mean it's next to impossible for kids to get good jobs nowadays because someone with more experience will always be willing to do it for minimum wage. So they end up having to go to uni, run up debts, then eventually getting a minimum wage job doing the crap they could have been doing when they were 16 anyway!!

My first job was £3 an hour, working 9am-3.30pm netted me £19.50. Around 16 years ago, it was all above board, payslips, uniform, I liked it and left because they shut. There really aren’t many opportunities for 14-16 so I’d cut them a little bit of slack before declaring them creepy or wrong. It’s the companies that would fire you when you jumped a NMW band (eg turned 18) that used to annoy me. I did work for lots of places that were very morally dubious but my £3/hour wasn’t one of them.

@ChanklyBore but it’s not up to the companies to decide the rules don’t apply to them and only employ people on the lowest NMW bracket.

lots of people do it. Specially those in the tourist areas, keeps the wage bills low and the businesses survive another year.
