Greek islands

My mum wants to visit Crete for her 60th next year.
Is it worth it or would people recommend another Greek island?
I would ideally like a place that has a good amount to see (we're not into spending the whole week sunbathing) and possibly a day trip to Athens?
Santorini is something I've always considered.
Any help would be appreciated.

NB- I posted this in the travel section yesterday and only had one answer (greatly appreciated tho!)

Error there meant I have been to Corfu and Rhodes and I like both.

The venetian harbour in Charnia on Crete is beautiful.

I would recommend Crete ! But you do need to choose the hotels with big consideration, as it took me quite a while to find something decent. If it helps you can see my video where I shared my experience in hope that it might be useful for people like me, trying to find first hand , real reviews of places, rather than marketing and promotional stuff!!

The above one is part 1 review of the resort in Crete , and there are two more videos Part 2 and another family resort . The best thing was that both were quite reasonably priced with good facilities and food :)

And the final one is my review of the second resort like I said in my previous post. This resort is closer to Heraklion

I worked on Crete for 6 months and it’s nice. Although I would recommend that you stay in Chania side as it’s nicer.

Santorini is lovely but probably more suited to a day trip. Kefalonia is lovely but sooooooo expensive. Rhodes is nice too but not as much to do as Crete.

I love Crete and will be there again in a few weeks. We always fly to Chania and stay in a villa in the Apokoronas region, Vamos, Gavalochori, Kefalas etc. The roads are reasonably good so travelling around the island isn’t difficult.
The beaches are great, weather is perfect and the food fantastic.
This year we are also having a few nights in Chania after the villa stay. It is a lovely town.

Thessaloniki/Halkidiki are really lovely but they’re not islands. Kefalonia and Corfu are also beautiful - the Ionian islands are green as well as beachy - a winning combo imo xxxxx
