To have so many toys?

ClueDont · 17/06/2018 14:05

Really though. There are SO many. I didn't have anything when I was younger (most of time In care etc) so I don't have a normal view I don't think. I wouldn't give anything away unless it had not been looked at for years. All the toys get played with a lot and I delight in all the wonderful games they play. I know they aren't Needed though. So please give me some perspective and tell me exactly what you have in your house. We have:
A fair bit of playmobil
Tons of LEGO
K nex
Dolls house
Loads of books
Dolls, bed and buggy
Puzzles
Duplo
Balls
Frisbees
A few big cars/lorries
Two ride ons
Random action figures
Lots of dressing up
Board games
Doctors kit
Tool kit
Two RC cars
Craft stuff
Mr potato head
Horses and stables and lots of other small toy animals
Random other fiddly toys
Cuddly toys (lots)
Marble run
Baby toys like stacking cups, finger puppets, rattly stuff
Outdoor toys
Lots of trains and track
Kitchen with lots of food
Shop

So tell me honestly, what have you got in your house and does my list make me sound unhinged? How would you go about having less when everything is genuinely played with?

Ps we do kind of have the space for it but it's at the expense of things being tidy and ordered (which I am incredibly inexperienced in, see above re childhood Grin )

i have more than that. my living room is like toys r us. but in my defence i have 4 kids!

Bananalanacake · 17/06/2018 14:10

Sounds like a good selection to me. Though you have not mentioned how many dc and their ages. We have loads of duplo and Lego cos me and dp met that way we are adult collectors.

firawla · 17/06/2018 14:10

It sounds absolutely fine, if you have space and it gets played with then I wouldn’t worry. Like the poster above we have 4 kids and more than that, I could probably do with a clear out though

Sparklesanddiamomdsforever · 17/06/2018 14:11

We have ridiculous amounts too, and get new things weekly. I know it's spoiling them, but it's nice to be able to

Boooommm · 17/06/2018 14:11

our house used to be like that. found they only played with bits of it. Did a huge car boot and charity shop run and got rid of a third of it. They play with loads more of it now. Now try and get them to have experiences and books for birthdays and xmas with only little pressies. It has hugely improved the way the play and made our house feel bigger!

Turquoisetamborine · 17/06/2018 14:12

How old are your kids though? My eldest is ten and doesn’t play with any toys any more, the last to go was Lego. He loves books, playing football and his xbox though. We give any outgrown books to his school for their library.

My youngest is just turned three and he does play with toys a lot. He has a playroom to keep them all in as I try to keep bedrooms peaceful. He has...
Toot toot driver track and accessories
Playmobil
Lego the eldest has outgrown but doesn’t play with yet.
Paw patrol vehicles, animals etc
A peter rabbit playmat and all the figures
A fire station plus fire engine and figures
A car garage plus all the cars
A Thomas the tank track and dozens of trains

Plus about 6 Ikea drona boxes full of assorted stuff.
That is quite a lot I suppose but it does get played with. We are having a day in today and he has tons out.

Sevendown · 17/06/2018 14:12

How many dcs and what ages?

Turquoisetamborine · 17/06/2018 14:13

Oh forgot the massive box of DUPLO

PorkFlute · 17/06/2018 14:16

I think that sounds like what you would typically find in a playroom as kids do tend to have a lot of toys these days.
If you think it’s a bit overwhelming you could always box some up and rotate them every now and again. But if everything is played with daily and things would be missed I’d carry on as you are.

mirime · 17/06/2018 14:27

One DS here, he's five.

We have loads of Lego
Marble run
A lot of Thomas stuff - track master, minis, wooden, take n play and some Hornby,
jigsaws
books
dinosaurs
Craft stuff (paint, glitter etc)
Garage
Workbench - shape sorter thing he refuses to give up
Plastic and wooden sets of Meccano style building bits.
Small amount of playmobil
Boxes full of random bits and pieces
Toy dyson
Two bins full of soft toys
A big electric ride on car he's grown out of (it's in the garage with his bike, scooter and another two boxes of toys, including duplo), Pokemon toys
Hotwheels

I'm sure there's more...

mirime · 17/06/2018 14:29

We're not tidy by the way, most of it is downstairs as he's still sleeping with us.

He mainly plays with the Lego and the marble run at the moment.

furandchandeliers · 17/06/2018 14:37

I have 5 kids and two step kids all under 11 and a baby on the way so we have at least that much, but our house is very big so it's spread out across their bedrooms and a playroom so it doesn't look like we're drowning in toys.

You definitely have a good selection thereSmile

IGiorni · 17/06/2018 14:37

DS is 8 and in his bedroom he has Lego (boxes and boxes full), k’nex, lots of action figures, Pokémon figures, games, jigsaws, hex bugs, cars and hot wheels tracks, various electronic toys (robots etc), a box of dressing up stuff including the millions of pretend swords/guns/laser blasters, and a box of McDonald’s/magazine freebie tat. Most of his things were birthday or Christmas presents, we very rarely buy him things in between and he occasionally buys little bits from pound shops or charity shops with his pocket money.

IGiorni · 17/06/2018 14:38

Plus he can barely get in bed for all the cuddly toys but he couldn’t possibly part with a single one Hmm

Sleephead1 · 17/06/2018 15:26

I think that's fine if your children like it and play eith it why not. we have Lego, duplo playmobil, lots of wooden plan toys stuff vets, shops, wooden animals ECT. Massive wooden train set with loads of trains and accessories, Bob the builder stuff, Thomas mega blocks, jigsaws, 2 garages and assorted cars, then a box of mixed vehicles like the Greendale rocket from postman pat, police car ECT, wooden kitchen and shop with food and till ECT, wooden tool bench, play dough, books, lots of board games , a washer, Wooden puzzles and bead threading sets, a wooden washing line , cot, and wheel barrow they where mine, marble run and loads of craft stuff.

TheGirlWhoLived · 17/06/2018 15:46

We seem to have something from every category! Two girls though, so not a lot of typically 'boy' things, as they are bought by us. Mil will only buy very girly girl/orientated things, lest they grow penises. Please see Pink Lego Hmm
Ages 4 and 7

SO MANY play figures... at least 200 shopkins (and all the sets/malls) over 50 LOL dolls, various Maconalds toys, 12 busy books and associated toys, Magiclip Princesses, Playmobil (123 and more recently normal), Lion Guard/Vampirina/Disney collectables etc, and My Little Ponies and a box full of animals.
Doctors Set/Farm Set/Babys and associated paraphanelia, including but not limited to prams, carriers, potties, outfits and bedroom Hmm
Three Story dolls house and two boxes of barbies/cars/horses/outfits
A wooden toy kitchen and various food/trolleys/pots/pans.
Peppa Pig/Paw Patrol/Blaze toys, playsets, figures etc. and then computer consoles, books, dvds - obviously not including the outdoor stuff like bikes/scooters/trampoline etc. If this house burned down most of the money would be to replace the kids stuff Grin

But I am quite creative with storage.... it is all somewhat contained!

Well we have a whole playroom full. Plus a 8 box unit with craft stuff and board games. Plus a dolls house and a few toys and games in their rooms. Plus outside stuff.

Tbh we’ve pared it down a lot from what it was. Now it’s mainly all in a few categories

Barbies and similar dolls and house
Old fashioned dolls house
Babies and paraphernalia including pranks
Lego
Star Wars vehicles and figures
Cars
Shop stuff
Sciencey stuff
Teachers set

user1485342611 · 17/06/2018 16:31

If they play with all of the toys and get real enjoyment from them I don't see the problem. It's certainly a generous supply of toys but it's not a ridiculous amount.

I do think it's wasteful when you see playrooms stacked from floor to ceiling with tons of toys, and 80% of them are never used. But that's obviously not the case with you, and you also have books and boardgames in there, which is nice to see.

ClueDont · 17/06/2018 18:23

DC are 5, 3 and almost 1. Relieved to hear we are reasonably normal. I do feel like I'm drowning in toys but I think just need to get used to it!

OP posts:
Sevendown · 17/06/2018 20:58

They’re still very young- you will have a lot more stuff in 5 years time!

We used to have loads but gave it all way when we thought our family was complete.

Had another dc and are buying it all again!

We kept the books and soft toys but have re bought
Kitchen and accessories
Robot
Form boards
Jigsaws
Sticky bricks
Alphabet magnets
Arts and crafts stuff
Hoover
Duplo
Doll’s house
Work bench/ tool kit and drill
Wooden bricks
Animal figures
Board games
Sandpit
Bath toys
Farm yard
Pirate ship
A couple of dressing up outfits

Cagliostro · 17/06/2018 21:06

Sympathies. We have shitloads of toys. I could open as a childminder if I actually liked Other People’s Children.

We are having a clear out in preparation to move house, but they really do play with a lot (DD is about to turn 11 and she still chose some playmobil for her birthday)

My youngest is 7m and I am trying to do things differently this time round - I am being much, much more choosy about what toys I buy her, she doesn’t have much at all compared to how much the others had. We shall see how long that lasts 🙄

tomhazard · 17/06/2018 21:12

Toys for young children are important. If they are used then don't worry. My DC are 5 and 3 and we have:

A big box of barbie and other dolls
Loads of soft toys
Thomas the tank engine track and engines
Cars and a garage and a car mat
Ponies
Dressing up
Puzzles
Games such as orchard, hungry hippos etc
Books
Colouring and craft stuff
